Do restaurants where you live have policies like this?
We are having a going away luncheon for someone at the office tomorrow. It was initially planned at a somewhat expensive steak and BBQ restaurant. We have about 40 people attending, and we usually spend about $15 plus tax and tip each when we go there. Bear in mind you can get great meals all over town for $5-8 here, so that's a pricey lunch for us. They just called and told us that they would be charging us $50 for the use of their party room, and restricting us to three menu choices, starting at $22 each. We are ditching them and moving the luncheon to a less expensive steak and burger place. To me, it seems crazy for a restaurant to charge rent to people coming in to dine, and then also to restrict them to the most expensive dishes on the menu. The restaurant business here is extremely competitive, and although this is a very well established place I would think in this economy any restaurant would welcome a $600 Thursday business luncheon with two weeks notice to prepare..
