Inherit the Wind. . . the best way to drive home that life is not black and white but filled with grey areas.

Patton. Greatest movie in the history of movies. One of only two movies where men watching it are allowed to cry in front of witnesses (the other being "field of dreams").

vote-for8vote-against

@raider9924: I second "It's a Wonderful Life."

Lord of the rings. can all three be considered one movie?

Blood Diamond

(Shawshank Redemption was already taken, and although Pay It Forward is good too, it's a little more on the mushy-feely side)

vote-for4vote-against

@magiclela: I agree. Everyone should watch this movie. Weekly.

The Ballad of Little Joe. I think these are all great choices. No one movie can have all the important stuff in it. Ballad is my favorite of the movies that challenge preconceptions about gender roles.

Princess Bride, because everyone should know that wuv, true wuv, wiw fowwow you foweva

Trainspotting

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fing big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fing fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit- crushing game shows, stuffing fing junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?

I agree with several others here. It's a Wonderful Life.

vote-for2vote-against

Howard the Duck, just to say you have seen the worst movie in history(imho).

vote-for0vote-against

@reb350z: You just botched the first two: "White Oleander" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". I haven't seen any of those movies, nor do I really care to.

@cerwin8d: The worst movie ever has got to be "Manos: Hands of Fate"

I'm surprised no one has said Avatar.

vote-for1vote-against

@mlutz3: I liked Avatar, and I liked Avatar's message, but there are a hundred other movies with the same message. I wouldn't list it in my top ten, or even top 100 films of all time. Maybe not even the top 1,000. There are so many awesome films!

Another really great film that no one has mentioned: Whalerider.
