skyrim just came out - too early to tell IMO. It has a lot of promise, a lot of content, and most of what bethesda does is excellent. If your son hasn't played any of the elder scrolls games before - oblivion would be a great warm up for skyrim, or just skip to the newest game.

it will eat hours upon hours out of his life, however.

Skyrim is very similar to Oblivion. I guess if you've never played oblivion, go get it cheap with the expansions and have fun.

If you have played it, and money-no-issue, get skyrim.

And if you're REALLY interested in wasting 300+ hours, go get Morrowind for original xbox (or pc, i dont care). Now THAT was a blast.

Skyrim, hands down. From what I've played so far the story is engaging, the battles feel far more epic, and its not quite as tedious when you do have to travel as Oblivion was. Now, this is coming from someone who thinks that daggerfall was the epitome of the series, so take that with a grain of salt perhaps. But as far as my opinion goes of the elder scrolls games I've had the pleasure of playing : Daggerfall > Skyrim >= Morrowind > Oblvion.

Same game. Skyrim is newer and looks better and will last longer from what I have heard.

Assassin's Creed Revelations drops today. Great series.

Just so OP is clear on this, the complete titles of what you are asking about are:
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Same series, Skyrim is newest.
(i havent played them; i dont know which is best)
Both are critically acclaimed.
You cant go wrong with the newest game though, get him skyrim.

@wootfast: Well that makes it easier. Thanks.
And I appreciate all the help from the rest of you too. Teenage boys are hard to shop for.

If he has a PC to play on the Oblivion game of the year deluxe edition with all the DLC is only $6.24 through Thursday on Steam.

@flyinggirl: apocello42 brings up a good point: The "DLC" he mentions cost a ton of money shortly after the game came out. It stands for "Downloadable Content". Basically, they're add-ons to the game that really add to the completeness of the experience. And for $1.24 over the cost of the one that doesn't include ALL of the DLC, it's pretty nice.

If you're looking for the xbox360 version instead, the $5 and $6.24 deals won't work, though. Those are PC only.
