Woohoo, you got that right! I agree 100 percent :D

vote-for11vote-against

I believe that crap is not kosher, but I also want second your statement.

Yeah, deals is addictive.

vote-for7vote-against

Between the (non-kosher) wines, the bacon deals, and some unfortunate chunks of SPAM, there probably isn't much about woot that is kosher. But we love it anyway!

vote-for4vote-against

@shrdlu: Nah. Crack, heroin, cigarettes and whiskey are addictive. Deals.woot is much worse because there is no Dealaholics Anonymous or 12-step program to help us. But if there were, they would get no members that want to quit.

vote-for6vote-against

@172722: As long as you're here, please explain the choice of "172722" as a username. It's one of those eye-catching wonders that keeps me awake at night. Okay, I lied, it doesn't really keep me awake, but it really does make me curious.

Not a zip code (too many or too few digits).

Not a phone number (867-5309 is my favorite, and that phone is blocked for giving out in almost every prefix, due to practical jokers, and no, not me).

It's fun to google (and I'm betting you're not the author of the dissertation on benzene that I found), but I really am very curious.

vote-for10vote-against

while I agree that deals.woot has some great deals, the fact that anyone and everyone can post a deal without the deal being verified, leaves the site cluttered with duplicates, spam, and non-deals. deals.woot seems more a social network and popularity contest.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just happen to visit and post at several other deal sites. Ferreting out the great deals on this site takes a lot more time but on the other hand posting a deal is lightning fast.

Now that I have stated my view, I am ready for the pouncing.

vote-for5vote-against

@theoneill555: Glad to hear that posting a deal is lightning fast. Would love to hear your thoughts about how Deals.Woot could work better at "ferreting out the great deals".

vote-for9vote-against

@shawnmiller: I haven't figured that one out, yet, but I am still trying to come up with some sort of solution that will work with keeping the fast deal posting (it take's slickdeals approx. 15 mins to verify and post a deal). There are some screaming good deals posted here that I have not seen on other sites (my son just got a PSP for $40 off @ dell). It just takes a a long time to read through the deals for pool signs at full price, expired deals that are still active hours after they are no longer available, one shot ebay items, and duplicate postings.

@shrdlu: My guess is that 172722 are the birthdates of children or other important people in the users life. Or maybe the 17th, 27th, and 22nd are significant in some other way to the user.

vote-for3vote-against

@reemus: WOW! A lot of thought into this! Nope, it's not important dates :)

vote-for3vote-against

@172722: Is it a name spelled out from a phone number pad? Or gematria?

vote-for2vote-against

@172722: so no hints about what it means?

vote-for2vote-against

@172722: Hey! Now you're just being coy. C'mon, tell. We'll keep it a secret, I promise. ;-}

vote-for2vote-against

@172722: Is it an employee number or service number then? How about a PIN?

vote-for1vote-against

@172722: if it helps get some details, a google search of 172722 gives 'Deals 172722 has added' as the first link. Google is interested in finding out too (if they don't know already)!

vote-for4vote-against

Maybe it's a 6-digit word, spelled as you would by typing it into a phone pad?

[edit] here's some possibilities:
17-crab 1-Sara-a 1-pa-sac 1-papa-a 1-rasa-a 17-a-sac 17-arc-a
17-bra-a 1-pa-pa-a 1-pap-a-a 1-par-a-a 1-pas-a-a 1-rap-a-a 1-sap-a-a

I'm giving up on my theory

vote-for2vote-against

@perkalicious11: Maybe the 1 is either an I or an L.

vote-for4vote-against

I wonder if it adds up to 42.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: Adds to 21 (or 3). Now you've got me curious. Anyone got a quick factoring machine for 28787? I have two factors already (2,3) for 172722, and the next factor is 11 or above. Back later.

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: I strongly suspect that you're over-thinking it.

But here are the factors:
1
2
3
6
11
22
33
66
2,617
5,234
7,851
15,702
28,787
57,574
86,361
172,722

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: When I mentioned important dates, @172722 said "WOW! A lot of thought into this! Nope, it's not important dates :)" From that I don't know that it would be something mathimatical, but I guess you just never know...

vote-for3vote-against

I think @172722 is being silent to make us sweat.

vote-for2vote-against

@anotherhiggins: not to sound stupid but how do you go from 66 to 2617?

vote-for3vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Those are not the factors I was looking for. It confused me for a bit, until I realized you'd simply generated all the possible factors, which is, after all, what I'd asked.

The factors I wanted are prime numbers. Hence my point in asking about 28787 (which is not prime), and stating that I'd already verified 2 and 3. Somewhere around here I've got a program for quickly finding factors in large numbers (in order to verify primes for use in other things). I was just being lazy. You made this far easier, and thank you.

I was looking for meaning in the original number, which is obviously not prime itself, since it's divisible by two. It's not a zip code, either, although it's possible that it is badge number, as has already been suggested.

11 is the next, which leaves 2617. 2617 is prime. That is to say, (2 x 3 x 11 x 2617 = 172722), or if you're extra special, (eval (* 2 3 11 2617)) = 172722. Thanks, that was fun.

vote-for3vote-against

@sgoman5674: Oh dear math, I hated math in school and this is why. I realise I brought up the math possibility. I still think it somehow works out to a math answer of 42.

vote-for1vote-against

@anotherhiggins: ...and of course I am over-thinking it. I've got to have some fun in life, you know? Thanks for the factors. What did you use to get them?

vote-for1vote-against

On the other hand, it still doesn't provide further insight into the choice of usernames for the OP. It was fun though.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: Ok I did it. Check this out: 42=(172)+(722).

I ROCK!!!!!!

vote-for5vote-against

I FIGURED IT OUT! The 17th letter of the alphabet is Q, 2=B, 7=G, and 22=X, so 172722 means he is a quarterback for Georgia ... oh, wait ... never mind.

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: oooOOOOOOOoooooh. I thought that maybe 28787 was a typo.

Right, so 11 & 2617 are the only other prime factors.

As for my method, I know it's ineloquent but I simply used Excel. Hey, I was using it anyway and it was very quick.

In A1:A172722, I put =MOD($C$1, ROW()) = 0. C1 = 172722. Autofilter > True gives you the factors. Verifying which of those are prime could be a little tougher, but luckily you can immediately eliminate most of them using a little bit of logic.

BTW: I'm very happy that they've upped the maximum number of rows from 2^16 to 2^20 in Excel 2007.

vote-for3vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Funny. I would NEVER have thought to use excel. I went off and wrote some C++. Here's the code I used. I used the algorithm from Eratosthenes to quickly calculate primes (although I can ordinarily recognize primes up to about 6 digits or so). Change N to a larger number for more primes. Mmmm... Math. Numbers are good. Primes are best.

#include iostream
using std::cout;
using std::endl;

const int N = 1000;

main ()
{
int i, j, a[N+1];

for (a[1] = 0, i = 2; i <= N; i++) a[i] = 1;
for (i = 2; i <= N/2; i++)
for (j = 2; j <= N/i; j++)
a[i*j] = 0;
for (i = 1; i <= N; i++)
if (a[i]) cout << i << ' ';
cout << endl;
}

(iostream needs angle brackets, not underscores, Deals doesn't like open angle bracket)

vote-for2vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Crap. Lost the five minute window.

Thanks to the immortal Sedgewick for the nice clean algorithm. It's always important to give credit.

lol I love the crazy direction a deals.woot thread takes!

vote-for5vote-against

Man, you guys made my night reading all this! lol

vote-for3vote-against

@172722: they were bored I am just happy someone proved that your name could equate to 42, but really what does it mean?

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: what do two colons mean? This is just so much gibberish to me. Not sure if I am envious at your knowledge or if I just have a headache from looking at it.

"using std::cout;"
"using std::endl"

vote-for2vote-against

@sand4me: "std" is a package. "cout" and "endl" are functions within that package that I am choosing to use. Do you wrie any languages?

vote-for2vote-against

I have a feeling we're all going to feel really let down when it's something as silly an an employee =id at work or something...

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: Ha-ha-ha, giggle, snort: C-A-T spells cat. A small knowledge of html does not count, I'm sure. Never mind - my ignorance IS probably bliss - I was just kind of curious about the function of two colons together :: - I need chocolate.

vote-for2vote-against

@sand4me: How perfect, just the same, that you had comment number 42.

vote-for1vote-against

@172722 How about the birth day(s) of the month, of relatives? ex> xx/17/xx daughter xx/27/xx wife etc.

@172722: A person of mystery! As my grandmother said, always leave them wanting more.

vote-for2vote-against

@172722: The fact this was never revealed after all that work is disappointing.
