For anyone wondering, I was about to jump on this deal: http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/a5d561c6-0fab-452d-8265-c573d6e7dc4d/uni-ball-signo-207-gel-pens-24-pens#3

These pens are great! But I don't know if buy.com is.

Note: One of my biggest concerns is that they apparently charge you a monthly "loyalty subscription"... just by giving them your email address! This seems outrageous.

vote-for12vote-against

I have bought several times, used Paypal and had no problems.

Those pens are not sold bu Buy.com direct but from a marketplace vendor (just like Amazon's marketplace). In that case you will need to check out the actual vendor that has a score of 4.2 out of 5 and then decide whether you wan to go ahead with the deal.

I haven't had a problem with buy.com. I don't buy a ton there, but everything has been fine when I did buy.

vote-for9vote-against

@gchinkin, are you talking about the number of comments of each type? I am not familiar with mywot, but it looks like the numerical ratings for trustworthiness, reliability, privacy and child safety are not horrible--over 90%.

I know if I'm unhappy with a site, I'll go rate it and comment. But if everything worked out fine? I'm not likely to go rate the site, but even if I do, I'm really unlikely to leave a comment. What would it say--"Everything was fine"? Seems pointless if I already gave a high rating.

@sfeitler: You have a good point - one that I bring up a lot when questioning the effectiveness of MyWOT. Thus I don't really listen too much to the actual percentages (score). Rather, I look for negative/positive feedback. Also, the score can be buffed up by fake accounts - but fake reviews are much easier to spot!

I've bought from them several times and never had a problem.

All of the problems I've heard about with buy.com were related to when there's a rebate involved.

vote-for13vote-against

I've never had any problems with them, I've bought from them several times.

vote-for6vote-against

I'm like everyone else. I've bought from them several times. Never a glitch. I'd buy from them again with no hesitation.

vote-for3vote-against

This topic reminded me that Buy.com owes me a refund. They never refunded me. Now I'm on hold with Paypal to clear it up. Never buying from them again.

vote-for1vote-against

buy.com is my preferred online place to buy just about anything.
i always get fast service, and have never had any problem with anything
they sold. now as for their vendor sites, that's an entirely different
story.

vote-for6vote-against

i think most of the negative things that have to do with Buy.com are very similar to a lot of the negatives against Amazon.

Both run a "marketplace". While both are quite reputable, sometimes a crappy vendor sells via their marketplace and causes issues. Watch what vendor is actually selling the item & then make a decision about the purchase.

also, i know i'm definitely someone who doesn't go back to give a good rating, but one who yells LOUDLY when i am unhappy with a site. i'm certainly not the only one on the internets. just something to take into account.

vote-for3vote-against

I've bought from Buy.com probably 4 or 5 times, never a problem.

vote-for3vote-against

I have bought a few things from Buy.com including some big ticket things, never had a problem.

vote-for2vote-against

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Buy They rate them a little better and have a buy.com rep that seems to answer questions. I've heard bad things about them too.

vote-for2vote-against

I bought a DVD from there once and then got spammed to death with emails from them, turned me off forever. Good riddance.

vote-for2vote-against

This reminds me of the 1995 AOL invasion of the internet and thousands of messages from folks who thought they were on a local message board.

Still and all, when it comes to having good experiences with buy.com, I just have to say, "Me too!"

In fact, I missed the Uni-Ball deal on its first day and just purchased my 24 pens.

The problem that I have had with Buy is that they sold me a refurb 360, http://www.buy.com/pr/product.aspx?sku=210790818 a while back. It is stated that it came with a 1 year manufacturer warranty, activated by the customer upon arrival. No problem, right? Called MS and they called shenanigans, called buy.com and asked what was up and they didn't know, so I asked for a refund, got the runaround for 3 months, at which point they said that the 90-day return policy had expired. Filed a complaint with the BBB to which they responded twice by copypasta of their return policy. Finally, (a year after the initial transaction) they offered a partial refund, which I accepted. They said that they refunded by PayPal account.

Guess who's PayPal account is still empty?

vote-for2vote-against

Same here, no problems. Paypal works.

I had one problem long ago when I bought something. After completing the buy, you had a chance "to win" something by taking a survey. Didn't take the time to read the small stuff. The survey signed you up for some service and they started to hit my credit card. My own fault really. Buy.com has good stuff and decent price, just don't do any of the crap after you've completed the sale.

i've been against buy.com for over 10 years running! perhaps you kids are too young to remember this, but i was one of the lucky 1200 that bought this 19" (CRT!) monitor for $164.50 (huge deal then...was in for two!), only to have my order canceled shortly thereafter.

I have been buying things from buy.com for years and I have never had one problem. I even store my info with them to make check out that much quicker

vote-for2vote-against

i have been buying stuff from buy.com for many years. i haven't had a problem with anything i have purchased through them - from small items to big ones.

as @theoneill555 pointed out, they have marketplace vendors on there now so you will want to check out the vendor if it isn't actually coming from buy.com before making a purchase.

I've bought a bajillion items from buy.com over the last .. uhh, many years. Buy.com direct has always treated me well, and has given me exemplary service. Buy.com Marketplace Sellers have always treated me well, but I understand that since Marketplace Sellers are just normal people like you and me, there is the possiblity of fraud (just like Amazon Marketplace or eBay).

Literally, YOU could be a marketplace seller, and nothing except the fear of getting caught will prevent you from ripping someone off. However, it seems that most people just want to do good business.

In 10+ years of shopping on Buy.com Marketplace, Amazon Marketplace, and eBay, I've only been ripped off ONE time on eBay - and it was from a seller that I had done business with before. They did one round of good business, then did another round and split. I was out $60 on some Magic: The Gathering cards. (you can stop making fun of me now).

Sorry you had a bad experience, but things have gone well for me!

I like Buy.com, it's basically just like Amazon. Plus I get around 5% cashback using my Discover More card...

vote-for2vote-against

I've only placed 1 order on buy.com and i didn't have any problems.

I'm pretty sure that WOT scorecard is only going to list poor experiences since %99.9 of people don't post reviews, and the ones who do usually have a bad experience.

vote-for1vote-against

I've bought a lot of memory cards and such from buy.com and never had a problem.

vote-for2vote-against

Here is my situation. I bought Planet Earth Blu-Ray from Buy.com, it was apparently from a marketplace reseller, they send me the UK one.

I contact Buy.com, they tell me to deal with the reseller, I work things out with the reseller and send the merch back and get a message from Buy.com that says they'll refund me. Fast forward to when this topic shows up, still no refund.

I contact PayPal, they contact Buy.com, Buy escalates my dispute to a claim and tell me to deal with the reseller, when I explained I had already and have received the refund confirmation e-mails, they send an address to PayPal to have me send the item back TO Buy.com even though they didn't sell it to me in the first place.

I contact PayPal, wait a few days for a resolution. They find in Buy.com's favor because theres no way I can send the item to them when they've already communicated to me to send it back to the reseller. Buy.com has cheated me of my refund.

Are they really that bad? Yea, they really are.

vote-for1vote-against

I've bought a lot from buy.com and never had any problems. I always used paypal though.

vote-for1vote-against

I've bought from them occasionally over many years. I've used Google Checkout and their own payment system and never had a problem with them.
