Do you brown bag or go out for lunch?
I packed my lunch today but that is atypical for me as of late. It seems that I have spurts of packing my lunch for weeks, then weeks of dining out. Just wondering what everyone else is doing during their lunch breaks at work?
I've also noticed that during the winter I crave more hot foods, those that you can't convincingly microwave and still be edible. Also there's a limit to the number of turkey sandwiches you can eat in a month. :-)
I live less than a mile from where I work, so I usually go home and eat leftovers.
I try to bring at least 4 times a week. Sitting on my butt all day + greasy lunch food was not doing well for, well, my butt. Especially since I'm not great about making healthy dinners, either.
I bring frozen dinners for lunch. Usually pick them up at the grocery store for $1 each. Definitely saves on the minimum of $5 that I'd pay if I went out everyday. That means more money for woot-offs!
My goal is to average less than $5 per workday on lunch (really, "food at work not counting coffee").
Generally, I have a "lean cuisine type" frozen thing or tabachnick soup, plus an apple or other fruit plus some kind of snack (nuts or kashi bar, etc.) over the course of the day. (I pay no more than $3 for the the frozen things and there are two servings of soup in each tabatchnick package). I take in leftovers one or twice a week and eat out (Subway or diner or pizza/italian, etc. about once every two weeks.
(Our college cafeteria makes horrible food that costs about $7-$10 for lunch. I feel sorry for the kids that live on campus, though I guess I was willing to eat crap that tastes bad when I was a kid too.)
I bring a lunch usually. If not a sandwich, some leftovers. Saves big money and is healthier for you.
I bring my lunch 98% of the time.
Well over a decade ago I used to eat out every day. As others said, it wasn't great on the wallet and horrible on the waistline.
I end up going out for lunch mostly. Usually it's because I need to get away from that place. It never fails if I'm in the break room, someone will hunt me down to ask me some super urgent question that just couldn't wait 30 minutes.
I agree with you too, there's only so many cold sandwiches I can stand before going nuts.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries.....I get Both!
I bring a sandwich or salad daily. Saves quite a bit of money, but sometimes I end up craving the junk food. I really only go out if I forget to grab it on the way out or have plans ahead of time.
I always tell myself the night before that I'll make a lunch but half the time I end up just buying lunch.
I go home for lunch to feed my dog and eat there. Although it's a crap shoot whether that will be a freshly made sandwich or salad, or leftovers of a meal I prepared, or leftovers from a restaurant meal. I eat out a lot on the weekends and always have food left to bring home.
Depends on how lazy I feel, but usually brown bag.
I bring a lunch and have for the past 4 years.sometimes I wish I could eat lunch in the school cafeteria but done have time.
@embhorn: Oh, sigh, to work close to home. I can only wish....
I normally bring my own lunch. It normally consists of a turkey sandwich, some cookies and water. I'm not big on lunch.
For like a week I did eat at my company's cafe, but it was slightly expensive (about equivalent to fast food pricing, but was good).
Mondays and Fridays I grab lunch from wherever I have a coupon for.
Tuesdays and Thursdays we have lunch catered into the office, so I have whatever everyone else is having.
Wednesdays I grab a bowl of O'Charley's chicken tortilla soup, and use their rolls and 2 chicken strips from Chick-fil-A (plus sauces) to make a couple mini-sandwiches.
I'm a creature of habit =P
When I did work, I had a half-hour for lunch most days; unless I was attending a business lunch or was on the road, I brought a sandwich and a cold drink.
I've been meaning (for the last two years) to start bringing a lunch more often...I used to at least bring one 2-3 times a week, but lately it's been maybe once a week...
We have a cafeteria in the building next to me at work, so I generally just go there, otherwise during the summer months, they run a grill as well.
The food is good, but it does get kind of expensive.
What I've gotten into lately is buying snacks, drinks, chips, cookies, etc. and leaving them in a drawer at work that way all I have to do is buy the "meat" portion of my lunch...better than nothing, I guess.
Brown Bag 99% of the time.
I like to go to lunch with @agingdragqueen when I am in the office. True story.
both, depends on if we have leftovers in the fridge to take to work or not
I work in a busy shopping center, so i used to eat a lot of crappy take out for lunch. But as of late, i've been sticking with either subway or the $5 select vons deli sandwiches, which are better.
dining hall :( i hate meal plans. they made me have one because of where i lived
Last place I worked, I brought lunch most every day. I didn't bother going out for lunch myself, just the occasional meetup with friends and whatnot.
This place, there's actually a decent cafeteria with decent prices and an employee discount, so I almost always eat here.
I make our lunches for the week on Sunday (all home-made meals). My husband, daughter, and I never eat out for lunch. We save that for the weekends.
@pxb006: Never though about it that way. ;-)
I bring my lunch 99% of the time. It usually consists of leftovers, a protein drink and veggies.
I cook a hot lunch from scratch at home every day.
Yeah, I know. I'm hard to take sometimes.
My office is sort of isolated. At least 15 minute drive and park to any eatery. We have a cafe in the building but it sucks so bad I refuse to eat there, even if it's free. I used to not mind bringing leftovers and sandwiches when I also had the option of eating out, but that stuff gets boring fast. So now I just make a weekly run to Trader Joe's and pretty much cook meals at work each day that are better than leftovers or any of the overpriced garbage they make downstairs.
Mom packs my lunch, and I'm not ashamed of that.
Anybody who has considered buying a Mr. Bento should go through with it. It has easily been one of my best purchases ever.
Both. I go home to eat most of the time as I live 10 mins away. I go out and have lunch with people here from work at times, usually once a week.
I eat in our cafeteria - sure it's more than a frozen dinner, but it's pretty decent food. A frozen dinner or lunch meat would carry me through the day.
I'm single, so it's easy for me to make too much for dinner every night and then bring the leftovers for lunch the next day. A little boring eating the same thing twice or a few times in a row, but it sure is cheap!
I'm not surprised that nearly everyone is saying that they brown bag it or do the frozen dinners thing--we are all on deals.woot after all! :)
My office has a kitchen with some frozen options available for free, so I either bring a lunch, or eat those. If I feel the need to get out of the office I just eat it outside, and usually other people want to sit outside as well. It's a small office so every couple of weeks we all go out to eat at one of the local restaurants.
I spend too much
