questionswhat do 2011 woot grads want for a graduation…

Being a college graduate myself, here is what I would do.

College graduate: A GPS? A really good one, perhaps one with Google Maps integration and a whole lot of extras like traffic (make sure to get one with lifetime maps).

High school: Something for the car? Or maybe something for the iPhone? If the high schooler doesn’t already have an iPod Touch, maybe that.

Eighth Grade: A new video game. But honestly, my parents didn’t get me anything for 8th grade graduation.

If these ideas aren't sufficient, try asking them. Give them a specific budget (don't say up to $400, come up with how much you really want to spend on each) and have them pick something they like.

Cash. No stupid gift cards, either. Just cash. They gotta put gas in the car somehow.

8th Grader: This is the 2 coolest nerf guns ever made, and your little guy will dominate with either.

High Schooler: Accessories will work, right? The keyboard addition and pinball machine are awesome.

College Grad: Luggage. This will prevent them from "borrowing" yours!

let's see, it's 2011...

I have good news, there is a gift that can satisfy all three grads...

I also have bad news, it's condoms and booze.

I'm graduating college in December and I know what I'm gonna need which trumps my wants.

College Grad - $$$ Straight Cash is a real winner.

High School - I recall my favorite graduation gifts were $$$$ (sorry but its true, you can get whatever you want with Cash)

8th Grade (So kind of you not to leave the young'un out) - Portal 2 for 360.

vote-for6vote-against

I'd say cash for all of them.

For the 8th grader, expect his tastes to change immediately on entering high school. Buying video games for other people can be hard, especially if you're not a gamer yourself and can know what's good or not. You could get a gift card for a game store, but then cash is just as good.

For the high school grad, if she's going off to college, cash is pretty much the only thing she'll need, except maybe a computer, but you probably won't get a good one (ie. one that will still be good in 4+ years) for under $400. A TV could work, but that depends on what kind of furniture and stuff the school/apartment provides (or if she's living at home). But I made a lot of friends my freshman year by having the room with the TV.

For the college grad, if they've already secured a job, then I'd look into something interesting like a nice set of luggage or a vacation package. If they don't have a job, then definitely cash.

The best gift for a college grad right now is.....a job. Good luck finding them one of those though.

It's pretty tough shopping for girls since alot of things they like are very specific to them(i.e. clothes)

All the other gift ideas are pretty standard and I'm sure you've considered them. Tablets, kindles, etc.

Maybe a 3ds for the 8th grader?

Oh, a mini fridge might be a good gift for someone about to go to college, but it depends how far they are travelling. A hotpot, toaster oven, microwave or foreman are all handy as well in the dorm life.

My college grad is getting computer peripherals to go with the computer her dad is getting her, and a nice piece of custom jewelry. She's my niece so splurgy is okay.
The HS grad is getting money. She'll need it for gas and whatever.
The 8th grade grad is getting money in the form of gold dollars. It's all shiny and special and they LOVE getting real gold money.

vote-for4vote-against

I'd suggest finding something interesting to do with money - like when I didn't know what to get friends for their birthday I would get a small box (5 inches wide, 3 inches long, 2 inches tall or so) and cut a slit in the top. I'd count out 18 (or however old they were in years) one dollar bills and tape them in sequence to make one long strip of dollar bills - Rolled them up and stuck the first bill out of the slit (with the roll in the box) so that when they pull on the bill, they just keep pulling more and more bills out of the box.

It's also a fun idea to supplement another gift.

@diehardferret: Thanks for the idea! I've seen this before and every student loves money!

@flyinggirl: Great suggestions! I especially like the Gold Coins for the 8th grader. I received a few of these in a vending machine recently and he thought they were very cool!

I love it! As a priceless gift I could photoshop her into the job she is hoping to have, print it on canvass and frame it as a visual reminder of her dream job...someday!

I can see this working well! Thanks for the suggestion and sharing your experience!

Porta 2, eh? Does this involve shooting and killing? If not, it won't fly.

I'm sorry this is SOOO True... even though Momma doesn't want to believe it. But I think I let them wrestle with getting this on their own... lol! Great answer though!

@woothulhu: Is this what you mean by pinball machine? http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/cellphone/e6dc/?pfm=Search&t=iphone%20pinball It looks like fun...do you know if it really works? Anyone have experience with this?

vote-for2vote-against

@cindihoward: That's exactly right. I have played with one, and they're really fun, but definitely not for those with large fingers.

I would like someone to pay for my student loans. Or buy me a Plane ticket to Thailand.

@cindihoward: Portal 2 is rated E for Everyone no shooting or blood I'm in college and freaking love it and I'm a "hardcore" gamer

vote-for1vote-against

@cindihoward: Yes, he'll think Portal 2 is awesome. If he's even remotely the way you described him, he will love you for getting it. This is all speaking from experience :)

The game is deceptively deep - basically you can shoot 2 portals to enter/exit through. But there're violence, puzzles, a good story etc. It's from the same company that made The Orange Box (which I'm sure he already owns, if not EA has it on sale right now for $11...BUY IT FOR HIM)

Medal of Honor is included in the sale ($17) it's the kind of game he would like (Middle-east War).

Seriously - if he doesn't already have The Orange Box, get it. Can't stress that enough. It's got 5 complete games (games that could all be sold separately for $60 bucks each) Half Life, Half Life Ep. 1, Half Life Ep. 2, Portal & Team Fortress - and they're all A+ games. Plus, it's on sale for $11 bucks right now lol, which is ridiculously cheap. You might take a look at the EA Store 40% off sale too, see if there's anything he'd like. Anyway, just had to address the Portal 2 comment heh...if I have some time later or think of anything else, I'll chime in :D

Oh, Crysis 2, Bulletstorm, Gears of War 3, Rage, Brink...there're a ton of games out now and coming soon that are great..

College-> IKEA gift card so they can buy furniture, rather than begging for yours.

High School-> cash. for books, for fun stuff, just cash. immediate family- heirloom or piece of jewelry for a girl. Her first set of "real" earrings or something.

8th grade-> a family hand-me down is sufficient. video game also sounds good.

Hi there, Bruce Rickford here from www.shopHYDRA.com. First off, congrats on your grads!

We posted this deal with dads and grads in mind, as they are notoriously hard to buy for:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/f527f6e9-908d-4ade-b1ff-8d1444c374a6/geoffrey-beene-mens-boxed-leather-wallet-all-styles-colors-67-off#0

Every guy can use a wallet. A little cash inside gives them what they really want, and your conscience is off the hook because you went the more creative route and didn't just give money.

For Father's Day, one could do the same with a golf course driving range card inside or tix to a sporting event if Dad is really lucky.

Woot us if you like it, torch us if you don't. Either way, we'd love to hear from our fellow Wooters.

Some other thoughts that don't include shameless self promotion:
iPad {putting on nomex fire suit for Apple haters}
netbook
