Have you ever hit a brick wall or other inanimate object when angry?
I was on my lunch break at work, and one of the guys said that he messed up his knuckles when he hit a brick wall. He said it was either that or kill somebody, and some of the ladies were asking around, trying to figure out why a person would hit something and hurt themselves instead of just breaking something.
Personally, I've punched walls several times when I'm extremely frustrated with somebody so I don't get in trouble or fired for assault. Plus, the resulting pain gives me something else to focus on. I also have a habit of throwing things (picked up from my daddy), but, again, destroying store property would get me either fired or written up.
Anybody else have a habit of hitting or breaking things to relieve anger/frustration/stress?
I busted a truck window in anger many moons ago. I had to go to the E.R. and watch the doctor pick several chunks of safety glass out of my arm before he sewed the cuts up. I still have the scars on my inner forearm, but not proud of it.
I usually aim for softer objects, but I did inadvertently put my fist through a window once. I was picking glass slivers out of my hand for weeks afterward.
My hands are ugly. I've broken just about every bone in both of them. Glad to have grown out of/been medicated out of it.
Ashamedly I have done this on several occasions. I had a really bad boss who upset me a lot over the course of several weeks. It all built up inside me and i finally had to get it out so I took it out on some inanimate objects. I ended up skinning my knuckles on one hand pretty bad and breaking my left hand, didn't go to the doc for 2 weeks cause I didn't think it was broken.
On another occasion I had really bad sunburn and the itching wouldn't stop. I lost my mind for just enough time to punch a wooden locker at work, ended up breaking two bones in my hand that needed immediate surgery to fix.
I am not proud or happy that either of these occasions occurred in my life, but that's the way life is. Frankly, none of you really need to know this about me, but I feel the need to tell you as a way of therapy, to remind myself that there are always better ways to deal with things than the first thing that pops into your head.
Good thing I'm tough, cause I can be a real dumb ass sometimes.
I don't condone violence... now excuse me while I find my brass knuckles
I used to take a cardio kickboxing class at the gym, one where we actually got to hit punching bags. It was an amazing stress relief and I regularly referred to it as my weekly "percussive therapy" session. I'm female but would much rather hit something (even if it hurt) than break something. But maybe that's cause I'm also an engineer and would then feel obligated to fix whatever I broke.
for the record i am female. i got so mad at a coworker i walked to the back room and punched a power panel box. a different coworker (boyfriend of a friend) came out to check to make sure i hadn't broken my wrist. i didn't, but i did leave a dent in the panel. all the guys were impressed. the bosses never found out it was me.
I can usually avoid explosions like that.
Seems like an immature way to handle things.
Of course maybe that's why I have high blood pressure!
Punched a cinder block wall in boot camp to avoid going to the brig.
Punched a steel wall on board ship to avoid going to the brig.
Punched a stone wall to avoid hitting a friend's kid.
Due to some martial arts training when I was younger, I managed to avoid doing more than skinning my knuckles when I hit the stone wall.
Now for stress relief I belong to a medieval recreation group called the Society for Creative Anachronism and take part in the armored combat. It's quite the rush, and nothing gets rid of stress like smacking someone upside the head with a stick of rattan. :)
Reminds me of a "Friends" episode when Ross freaked out when someone (ended up being his boss) stole his sandwich from the lunchroom fridge. It was very dear to him, it had the "moist maker" in it. In the real world scenario, he might have punched his boss being that worked up.
Skeet or trap shooting is a great way to relieve stress, though my .45 works almost as well.
I used to beat the crap out of a canvas punching bag (bare knuckled) when I was in my early teens.
