Yup... Cookout with friends and family... and absolutely paying tremendous respect and giving thanks to all those who have served, and their families, remembering that our nation exists and carries on because of their sacrifices...

At home by myself. Wife is up country. Her Dad is at home on hospice and probably will not last the week. I am here keeping the critters alive and waiting for the call to head up for funeral. Will likely go to Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery to put flowers on folks' grave. They are bunking there as is the norm. Mom got there 1st - 04 - so has bottom bunk. Dad got there 07. I figure on being somewhere in the same area one day. Reckon I earned a burial plot with 10 years of putting up with G.I. nonsense.

Working. Tis one of the perks of working somewhere that is open year-round.

Had the cookout yesterday. Today will take flowers down to my Dad's grave. Then putting new posts and railing on the front porch.

Thanks to all that have and are serving....

Working. Though to be fair, the military is one of our customers, so I feel like I'm honoring them by providing them a service they're big fans of.

Thanks to all those wooters out there who are actively serving or veterans!

Recovering! We had our BBQ yesterday and it was a blast. Today we're headed down to the Memorial Day Parade & probably dodging rain showers at the same time.

I'll be home working on the yard. Wife has to work, so we'll have a cookout, the two of us, when she gets home.

I'll spend a good part of the day contemplating what makes today special and those who gave their lives for my freedoms.

Painting our garage door the wrong color and then repainting it the correct color. Also, Laundry. Do I know how to party on a holiday weekend or what?

@cyborgbill: My sympathy to you, your wife, and her family on the impending loss. I hope his passing is peaceful for all, and that your wife and her family have wonderful, positive memories of her father to carry with them.

I always found visiting the cemetery where my family is buried to be an emotional experience on Memorial Day, seeing the ocean of still, small flags rising from the ground. The front section of "our" cemetery is home to many Revolutionary War veterans, with a smaller dose of vets from the war of 1812 and the Civil War. The number of WWII vets increases weekly; I sobbed the first time that I saw a medallion for a veteran of "Operation Enduring Freedom." Of course, there are also medallions and vets from many other wars; it is humbling to see the sacrifices made across 250+ years of American history.

Today, I am a long way from the cemetery that is within walking distance of where I grew up, but I am thinking of those veterans, their families, and their sacrifices.
