Enthusiastic New Member - loosecannon67
Okay so thanks to @theoneil555 I just noticed a newbie blanketing the front page. In the last few hours they have accumulated 2 pages of deals. Definitely not a spammer, just someone who has gone overboard.
Say hello to @loosecannon67.

Ack it was @theoneill555 not the one I named as the tipper offer.
tattled right? because @jumbowoot said we need to tattle they prefer that over these AtW threads
@jumbowoot: EN Alert
@prettywootprincess: EN Alert
(as in, Enthusiastic Newbie)
@hobbit: The threads serve their purpose, and allow others to see that it's known. I don't know that I've seen @jumbowoot say specifically that we shouldn't post threads on this. Now that they're warning us that they are about to delete one, it even removes the cultural stain that otherwise might be attached to a given new poster.
Everyone, say hello to Loosecannon67.
LC is the newest member of our community and he will be very active. He is very enthusiastic and we like him a lot. He will be working very hard to bring us the best deals from all over the internets.
He's a real nose-to-the-grindstone sort of fellow so don't expect a whole lot of interaction but he will be very mindful of your opinions so offer them freely.
All told.
@hobbit: Generally I would just tattle, but I rather not put a lengthy explanation in the tattle box to point out that someone has two pages of deals so quickly.
@jumbowoot: Huh, is he a new staff member or something or are you joking.
@catbertthegreat: You have to admit, some of the deals aren't too bad. I liked the men's bike and "Tombstone" always gets my vote because Sam Shephard makes the best movie cowboy. What a mustache!
@catbertthegreat: I'll bet money that @jumbowoot is amusing himself at our expense. He amuses me too. Besides, the new early warning system is incredibly considerate, and we all appreciate it.
Okay, off to dig up a burst irrigation pipe and replace it.
@jumbowoot: Before I forget, and since you're going to delete this in a few anyway, let me say that @emhodew does NOT speak for us all (his last response to you is still bothering me).
Sigh. Looks like a new 'deal hunter' to me. I wish there were staff badges.
Hi @catbertthegreat. Being fairly new to deals, I was not sure if massive posting was kosher or not. But I just had to mention our new friend somewhere and didn't want to start a new AtW.
@chris12345: and the winner is....
We always said "drink from the firehose".
Well, we just cranked it up a notch.
The pace of deals.woot has increased.
More deals. More variety. More things to comment and vote on.
All in all, more fun.
Hey, party people! Loosecannon67 here. You guys already made a thread about me?! That's awesome! I can't believe I already made my mark on my first day here. My mission is to post as many deals I possibly can. My intentions are wholesome, I assure you! I know it seems like I am spamming up your page but the fact of the matter is that my boss has a rather large whip as well as the pen that signs my checks.
It’s nice to meet all of you and I look forward to hearing feedback from everyone.

@loosecannon67: So you really do work for Woot...sigh. They are still good deals, but they are telling you to fill the page deliberately? Is there a particular time of the day you will be doing it, so I can avoid posting or just avoid this site in general during that time?
@jumbowoot: I don't know if it will necessarily mean more fun. Now a user's deals will get pushed off the first page of deals faster because of the corporate deal poster...
@loosecannon67: Actually, speaking JUST for me, here, I'm pretty much disposed to hate you right now, even though it's (perhaps) not your fault. Please consider how we are viewing this...
@jumbowoot: May @loosecannon67 please have a tab devoted just to loosecannon67 deals? Please?
@loosecannon67: sorry Dude or Dudette, I have to agree with @catbertthegreat and @shrdlu and @reemus and @lavikinga on this one. What time do you go sleep and what time zone are you in? This way we will know when deals.woot is available
CHALLENGE: who can build a loose cannon filter?
ahhhhh got it......this must be one of those woot jobs I was looking at. Where they are looking for deal hunters.
@jumbowoot @loosecannon67 at the least, you have selected a great user name. now management can easily disclaim responsibility :)
@jumbowoot: In that case bossman can you explain the deal hunter's jobs and what they will be doing so when the rest of these people show up we will recognize them and be less likely to tattle on them? Because to be honest I was a bit concerned about 2 pages of deals being posted so quickly too, I realize this is LC's job but given the week deals has had with snotty deal posters, counterfeiters, and other issues I actually took the name as some one taking revenge on deals and trying to flood the site in a very stupid fashion since it was obvious it was only one person. Consider my background in forum management I have seen behavior like that before, usually the next behavior would have been horrible things being said about staff and regulars. Which in this case didn't happen because LC is staff, but you get my point.
The great news is that we've expanded the staff of the deals.woot team and we plan to continue expanding. The less great news is that we're working to fine tune how best to use some additional full time firepower here without overwhelming community pace or biasing the system with staff agenda.
there are already several longer term projects in the works that will put @loosecannon67 to work productively, but this thread should probably include a suggestion material of what sort of work our deal-hunters could do to ensure deals.woot has the basics covered every day.
are there stores or categories you would like scanned for deals regularly? is there a list of daily deal sites we should work to add? etc..
@snapster: Videogame deals, please.
@snapster: Tools (hand and power), but don't go overboard on it for me.
I have to agree with the rest... When will you be on so that I can avoid you?
No offense intended, but to me, it kind of cheapens the novelty of this place knowing that a staff member will be posting so many deals. I like the idea that many people from different walks of life with different and varied opinions on what's hot and what's not can easily have their ideas of a deal shown. When I know it's a staff member monopolizing the postings, it makes me want to shy away from this really great site. I don't like feeling that my eyes are being turned in a certain direction. I loved the randomness of the free for all system that has been in place thus far. Just my 2cents...
I'd like to see the woot labor used to amplify great deals posted by regular users. As mentioned earlier, when too many deals are posted at once, fine buying opportunities are buried.
Why don't you have your newbies update the leaderboards so that they don't represent ancient history.
@claudicina: Well put. Why is the Olympic swimmer being thrown into the kiddie pool with the rest of us? All of those new deals showing up in such a short time frame, well, it's overwhelming, not to mention it being the exact thing we've all been warned NOT to do. Color me confused.
@snapster: Burn some staff hours watching for ebay auctions posted as deals. Burn some staff hours watching for MLM sites posted as deals. Burn some staff hours watching for scams posted as deals. You get the idea.
If you're going to flood Deals with staff postings, then A) Identify them as staff, and B) Rename Community Deals as Mostly Staff Deals, and maybe a few others now and then.
Seriously, back when this was beta, I heard a lot about how this was a community. Somehow we all got lucky, and the AtW side really and truly became a community. In spite of how difficult it is to make contact (without including the world, considering how fast Google picks up postings), many of us are in contact with each other outside the site.
You let us build a neighborhood, and now you want to plow it under, and build a high rise. It makes me really sad. I like it here. Please don't break my toy.
A request - please include necessary information like shipping and availability in all the posts.
Since the staff posting are likely to be the most frequent & sometimes people model their activity by what is prevalent in a community, having that be standard for a staff posting would be an asset.
I would like to echo what folks are saying about having an indicator as to who is staff. It would be nice to know who posts deals as an act of kindness/community/enjoyment, and who does it because it's their job. Personally, and I think most deals posters, I tend to post deals that I have experience with so I am kind of endorsing the company/product. This is very different than posting for volume - as I perceive this addition and the frenetic freebie posters do.
Thanks.
I don't think having lc flood the fresh page will be as much of an issue once fresh deal folders are added to the site.
A heads up would have been nice beforehand, though. Not being told about upcoming changes reminds me too much of work. And I know I'm just a visitor here, but still. Keeping us in the loop would put an end to these OMGWTFHALP reactions.
@snapster: I have to agree with the others. We don't really need more deal hunters. Isn't that what the community is for? Frankly I am not going to give up my sites that I watch for deals on, and personally I may just share those privately offline from now on to ensure YOU don't bogart them away from me, because I kind of found it insulting to see jobs posted for deal hunters. You are basically paying folks to do what we have done for months for free, so where is my incentive to keep posting deals if someone else is going to be paid to steal my sites out from under me and post deals from them in the future. Oh Hell no, how rude is that? Sorry @jumbowoot, I respect you and the deals staff, but this sort of hurts. I agree with others. there are things like watching for counterfeiters, fake deals, and bad ebay deals taht need more looking in to than posting more deals and getting paid for it.
@chris12345: deal is. LC isn't going to be the only dealhunter. They are hiring for more of them. Hobbit is not pleased.
I have to admit I felt grumpy about this whole thing but I feel a bit better after finding a better deal than one the paid staff posted.
(blows a raspberry & smirks)
Is the @loosecannon67 also going to participate in challenges or pretty much also regularly answer the questions in ATW?
@catbertthegreat: yes, that's exactly were we're headed, it just wasn't introduced well. Deal hunters will be active for AtW and other community enhancements we have in mind as a service to the community activity.
Today's "experiment" is simply the result of adding deals too quickly from one user for the current bandwidth and methodology of consumption. However, that said, building a better platform with sharing utilities such that faster collaboration and elevation of filtered great deals IS a desirable goal.
@blime22: Are you another staff member? We seriously need badges or something this is getting ridiculous. Also could you speak in plain English, your entire last paragraph was lost on me.
@blime22: Guess we can add this in as another staff account.
I've been tempted to say this for hours, and don't take me at my word, but here you go, just the same.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
@catbertthegreat: Did you ever read my response to your earlier email?
@shrdlu / all
My apologies. I'm using home computer and we had guests over who didn't log out. I didn't think to look and left after posting. above post (from "blime22") is from me.
@hobbit: Earlier, you posed what I consider to be an interesting debate - whether individual sources and methodologies for finding deals are best held as personal secrets or best shared with the community at large.
My current opinion is that the many mundane sources for finding deals should be either consistently covered by the community or automated by script or staff. The problem to solve for and/or grow into is that consumption and ranking of the existing quantity of these "proposed deals" out in the wild requires a ton of collaborative bandwidth. If, through more members participating and better UI/sharing tools, the community can group-filter deals faster, we can get to the real fun. As we build trust in full coverage of known deals, then creation or discovery of fresh deals can be celebrated, either by community request ("challenges" becomes group buying) or retailers noting the opportunity more generically (posting specials here first).
@hobbit: Interesting concept... a site where staffers post cool deals that they dig up or otherwise become aware of. Oh, wait. That's dealnews.com!
I agree with you 100%. We need more moderators, not more deal posters. Especially nights and weekends.
Put a bull's eye on me and pull out whatever weaponry was discussed in a recent ATW and put me in the crosshairs ...
I'm all about the deals.
I really don't care who posts the deals, or how many deals one person posts. If Woot wants to pay someone to spend all day, every day to find me the very best deals they can find ... thank you! You've made my life a lot easier.
For example, @loosecannon67 posted a deal for a digital voice recorder. Last night, I was actually doing a search for one. (Will be doing some oral histories this spring and summer.) Though I didn't post the deal, because it wasn't a deep discount, @loosecannon67's find is exactly the one I decided upon last night.
I hope, though, that Woot's professional deal hunters will refrain from posting bacon deals. Please.
@snapster: Then why have us? really. Because you have a lot of regulars doing that already and I think that they are going to find you to be completely ungrateful for the work they have already been doing. So instead of rewarding them for their diligent VOLUNTEER work, you are going to pay some snotty 22 year old to do it. Doesn't seem right to me.
As to community enhancements? same thing. Really what is needed is more weekend staff to take care of spammers and issues that arise. It is obvious to me that I am probably not going to like it here once you involve all these enhancements, it is going to be less inviting, but I am sure all those people you listen to will love it. so go ahead ruin the community feel that we have going. It is your site anyway.
@snapster: I don't know about everyone else, but I don't want to skim through 200 pages of fresh deals everyday, because your workers found every single deal there is out there. And I agree with what hobbit, shrdlu, claudicina, lavikinga and all of the others have said here. I would say more but I'd just be repeating bits and pieces of all their comments. Also after reading your big words that I had to look up made my head hurt and I can't think straight.
The only reason I haven't really participated in this argument, is because I knew it was going to lead to no where. Just like the flickering buttons. You obviously have plans and are executing them. As @hobbit said it is your site/business you can do whatever you want. And that's fine with me. It just kinda makes me sad too =\
@duckcake: the current methodology of a fresh tab and single flow of deals is likely to become overwhelming to watch, but I believe with new abilities like following and personalized deal flows that everyone here will be able to create an experience they enjoy even more than the status quo. Ultimately you will have control of your own fresh tab, but the primary public tab will be moving quite fast.
@snapster: So, your saying your going to change it so every account has their own fresh tab, that they can personalize to only receive the deals they're looking for? Or what?
@snapster: I would still rather have crap like this dealt with first before fancy new features are added http://deals.woot.com/deals/users/seovery/commented this guy goes and spams deals with his counterfeit links. Why isn't his account banned?
@duckcake: Yes, user control of your own personalized fresh tab from users you actively choose to follow. Your wording implies even a step beyond which would be a neat idea to consider - perhaps ability to add into your flow fresh deals from users you're not yet following that have selected tags or search terms.
@hobbit: agreed - priority needs to be given to moderation of crap like that.
