Like returning the number of people adding things, voting or commenting? That would be pretty cool. That gets my vote.

@catbertthegreat: Yeah, I was thinking any of the following stats would be cool...

Number of wooters on deals.woot

Number of votes cast over last "X" number of minutes

Number of comments posted over last "X" of minutes

etc...

@mbrugnoni: This is like a math thing, right? Nice and simple, nothing that can be gamed. It would be fun, too.

There's a forum that I check on once a day that has number of people on plus number of guests (i.e. logged in, and not logged in), and number of people viewing the same thread you are looking at right then. Mostly that's useless information, unless I wanted to PM that specific purpose, in which case the info goes from useless to pricelss.

I'd like to see both those statistics here, too

- number of wooters logged in
- number of guests

I think we've seen from the questions asked that there are plenty of people who show up, and buy stuff, without ever logging in or participating in any way (and that's fine, we wish only the best for Deals, and every bit helps financially). In fact, many of the questions we saw were from people whose transactions had not been satisfactory, so they'd gone off and created an account to get help.

you mean like they have on regular forums? I kind of like being anonymous and not knowing that sort of thing. It can also bog down the system. But that is just me. I don't like people knowing I am here unless I make a post.

@hobbit: Oh, I agree, and think that there are simply too many people logged in at any time to list them individually. I think my brain was going faster than my fingers, there. I was mostly trying to differentiate between users and guests.

Knowing who's on an obscure forum, where many of the people have known each other in life, for many years, is quite different than helping out random stalkers, over here on Deals.

@hobbit:

Not necessarily who (or you in particular) --- I was thinking more along the lines of... how many wooters.

It wouldn't identify actual users, rather the volume of current wooters at certain times or over certain durations...

vote-for2vote-against

@mbrugnoni: you do realize it would be in the thousands. There are over a hundred thousand wooters I believe signed up, it might be impossible. I just don't think the number is needed. I don't like to know that websites can track me, I know they do but it is one of those things I prefer remain a mystery.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: I asked @snapster how many wooters there were in their system a while ago. He told me they have over 2 million signed up but only about 1 million active users. I don't know how they handle users with multiple accounts.

@sgoman5674: hence my reason for not caring about how many wooters are on deals.woot I realize I am one of the few who doesn't care but I just don't see what would be gained by seeing how many people are on the site, except then the next thing is folks will want to see WHO IS online and I will never go for that.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: I see your point. I don't need to see who is online, nor do I care.

@shrdlu: What about like, turning it into a national map similar to the woots per capita. Number of people doing stuff on here instead of people buying crap though. We could even add like a international thing too, kind of like on ESPN -- they add a little globe-image to represent number of people representing anywhere outside of the US since, clearly this woot site has broken the borders of the US like a van full of illegals escaping the border patrol.

or maybe not quite like that...

@md1088: I'm actually not a fan of such visual aids. Numbers are good. I like statistics, but the goofy map that Woot shows when people buy something is so open to misinterpretation that it's a mere amusement. I say this AFTER becoming fully caffeinated for the morning, since my original response was somewhat unpleasant. Yes, it's true. I can be unpleasant.

Even statistics are tough, when we consider that any item you might wish to keep track of, and make deductions from, is limited by the fact that not all data is actually available. Some things that are not currently being tracked would only add to the complexity of the site, and it can already be slow enough at certain times. I don't think, for example, that Deals keeps track of all clicks on community deals, depending there on intermediaries where they'll benefit, and ignoring those where they won't.

That's just an example. Here comes the character limit.

@shrdlu: Good point. I would be interested in seeing some more little statistics though.
