Yes, the smart cover still works. Some of the hard shell cases don't fit, but the smart cover is fine.

I have some more info, and it CAN work but there are issues.

In the first round of smart covers, it worked by detecting a magnet in the cover, there are some tricks that can be done with the cover to bypass the unlock of the iPad and other not-so-good things. So in version 3 of the iPad, the made a design change, the magnets now are supposed to be orientated in a specific north-south alignment to prevent the funny business of the iPad2. so IF your cover is designed for the iPad3, then it works, IF you have a cover for the iPad 2 then there is a good chance it will work, but an equal chance one or more of the magnets is "backwards" in which case it will not work.

short answer, is that it will work as a cover, but you will not know for sure until you try it if the "smart" part will work as it is supposed to. (for long answer, see above)
