questionswhy does woot charge sales tax on the shipping?

The government will continue to find creative ways to tax you! :D

Woot is required to collect sales tax on the entire sale (including shipping and handling) in Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. If you are in any of these states, you will pay sales tax at Amazon as well.

More info:

If the item that you order is subject to sales tax in the state where it’s shipped to, tax is generally calculated on the total selling price of the item. Based on state tax laws, the total selling price of an item will generally include, among other things, shipping charges. The amount of tax charged on your order will depend on many factors including identity of the seller, type of item purchased and destination of the order.

The law is written that way because of eBay. Where you used to be able to get a TV for $0.99 + $500 shipping. They did this to get around seller fees, but it also makes a big difference on sales tax.

@omnichad: Huh, that's interesting background. It all makes sense now.

Thanks for all the responses. And it looks like eBay is to blame for yet another downside of the internet. Oh well, they were pushing the boundaries and seeing what was possible so I guess every once in awhile they get slammed back.
