I am very excited about this.

What about the whole flickering "tattle" and "reply" buttons? You guys made them bold but they still flicker and its really annoying. Please fix this.

Also what about being notified about comments after your's in a thread? There are some threads that I would like to keep track of what is going on in and I am sure there are others as well who share this desire. And I don't mean replying directly to my comment but to someone else's comment.

Thanks for adding this feature! And thanks for the head's up on the "mention notification." Didn't know about that one.

@sgoman5674: I think you're talking about this: http://grab.by/3e3n

Am I right?

vote-for5vote-against

@sgoman5674: That is why I posted a comment about it this morning. Especially because the new folk do not know where to reply or tattle about stuff. I am most concerned about their experience, since WE know what to do.

@shawnmiller: Thank you for this feature. It will definately help with repsonding to questions on posted deals.

vote-for3vote-against

@shawnmiller: Yes. Now that I see it in action, yes.

I guess I was just confused with all of the newness.

@hobbit: I know I saw that. My boss has told me of a very good saying that I will share with you. "A squeaky wheel is the one that gets greased first."

vote-for2vote-against

Hooray! New toys!

Thanks, @shawnmiller!

runs off to play

vote-for4vote-against

@sgoman5674: we are hoping. it worked on that explorer icon.

vote-for1vote-against

Interesting thought, the idea that I could be getting an email each and every time someone uses an @shrdlu to reference me. Let me think that over for just a bit. Nope. Don't think I'd want to know. Really nice feature though, and thanks for both it, and the "email me if someone else comments on a thread I've commented on," too.

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: What is the delay time on the emails?

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: Nice thing is you don't have to be here to read the response, it goes right to your email box.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: If @shrdlu replied a lot less than she does, it would be feasible. But since she is all over the place, I am sure she doesn't want to receive 10,000 emails from deals.woot on a daily basis.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: I'm on another forum where I get email notifications when a reply has been made in specific threads that I care about. I just suspect that (as blasphemous as this might sound) I can wait until I check back in to know whether or not someone's responded. Just saying.

vote-for3vote-against

@sgoman5674: Ding ding ding. You are quite right. I get upwards of 200-300 emails a day, some from mailing lists, most not. I can't even fathom mixing in Deals comments with that.

vote-for2vote-against

Nice idea, but the way people comment on this site... email addresses would get flooded. And it would probably start to get annoying. But some people may like it.

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: 200-300! I am lucky if I get 20.

vote-for2vote-against

@duckcake: You can choose to be notified on just one thread, of course. More importantly, you might want to know when people are making comments on a deal you posted, or a question you asked. I can see it being very useful, since you can fine tune it.

vote-for3vote-against

Commenting so I can subscribe to this thread via email notifications...

vote-for2vote-against

@sgoman5674: Delay time matches the longest possible time you have to edit your comment. 10 minutes. (five minutes plus a five minute grace period).

vote-for2vote-against

@shawnmiller: neat new feature.

What makes me really excited is that you just introduced me to TinyGrab. Don't worry, you'll be invited to the wedding. I'm in love!

vote-for3vote-against

@shawnmiller: Great, thanks.

Also what about if I check earlier in the thread and then uncheck the box later, will it still send me emails?

vote-for2vote-against

I should also mention that we tried to be intelligent about when we send emails.

For example, if you're already on the site and you comment on a deal or question before we send you an email, you won't receive an email for previous comments.

You also can't send a mention notification to yourself.

vote-for3vote-against

Can you also unselect to have things sent to you after you asked to have things sent to you?

vote-for5vote-against

Another nice feature we uncovered during testing: the subject of the email matches the title of the deal or question. The trend in email clients these days is to arrange inboxes by "conversation view". Gmail was one of the first to do this I believe. Here's a screenshot of the Outlook 2010 beta: http://grab.by/3edw

vote-for2vote-against

@shawnmiller: When did they come out with the beta for office?

Also I can see your other email address. You might want to block that out.

vote-for5vote-against

You can unsubscribe from notifications for any deal or question by clicking the link at the bottom of the email.

Or, if you've lost the email we sent you... simply add a new comment and uncheck the "email me when" checkbox.

vote-for3vote-against

Also, while we've tried to follow the guidance of the Email Standards Project (http://www.email-standards.org) there are a lot of clients out there with poor HTML email support.

If the Deals.Woot emails we send don't look quite right, we'd love to see a screenshot.

vote-for2vote-against

in my earthlink webmail they look all pretty. Actually I noticed the same change with facebook last week too and their emails.

vote-for4vote-against

@catbertthegreat: I found an answer to my question, there is a link in the email that you get that gives you an unsubscribe choice.

OR

you can just modify the deals URL to do it for you:
This:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/fb1246b3-69c5-4213-9fdd-5d5a157bf3d2/shirt-spanish-inquisition
Turned to this:
http://deals.woot.com/deals/unsubscribe/fb1246b3-69c5-4213-9fdd-5d5a157bf3d2/shirt-spanish-inquisition

will unsubscribe you, just change details to unsubscribe in the URL it will unsubscribe you from that thread.

vote-for4vote-against

@catbertthegreat: With the URL choice you don't have to leave a comment to unsubscribe. Not sure if this is a correct statement. Will try.

[Edit] It works. You get a fading box in the upper right hand corner of the site informing you that you have unsubscribed. Nice feature, but I wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't looking. Maybe making it red?

vote-for4vote-against

@catbertthegreat, @sgoman5674: I tried editing the URL to subscribe to a thread without posting a comment, but I'm taken to a 404 page. It works fine for me when unsubscribing. Bummer, I would like to be able to subscribe without posting a comment.

I suppose I could post something and then immediately delete it - but what a pain.

@sgoman5674 said, "My boss has told me of a very good saying that I will share with you. 'A squeaky wheel is the one that gets greased first.'"

"The squeaky wheel gets the grease," is a common idiomatic expression in the US. (I specify "in the US" because it doesn't apply to all cultures. From what I understand, "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down" is a common saying in China. That's a very different message being sent to someone thinking about making a ruckus.)

vote-for3vote-against

@anotherhiggins: I just came up with one. "The rooster that crows the most gets shot first."

vote-for5vote-against

@anotherhiggins: I've always thought "gets greased" was mob speak for getting whacked. You know, sleeping with the fishes, getting capped, smoked, taking a dirt nap or the big sleep, getting rubbed out, hit, clipped, popped, burned, been fitted for cement boots, taken for a ride... jeez, I'm out. Guess I need to stop watching The Godfather Trilogy every time AMC plays it.

By the way, always leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

vote-for2vote-against

@shawnmiller: so did you turn it on automatically for new people?

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: okay fine I will stop complaining about the flickering. but just watch all the new folks ask how to reply and how to tattle.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: Don't stop complaining about the flickering. I'm going to stay annoyed by golly!
Also, dear woot staff, I have not forgotten that I can't print these comments and get all of them without taking screenshots which is no fun. Still waiting for a printer-friendly button.

vote-for5vote-against

@sand4me: I find it ironic that someone complained about the icon and it was fixed yet we have asked for this truly problematic issue to be changed back so that new users aren't asking how to tattle and we are ignored. Makes you wonder why.

vote-for1vote-against

Great idea, but there should be an option to turn off notifications.
Lets say that you post a deal and want to get notifications. Suddenly it gets REALLY popular and everybody is commenting. "Please make the emails stop," you say, but to no avail.
Soon you have an inbox full of nothing but deals.woot comments and pointless facebook notifications!

vote-for5vote-against

@abramokids: There's a link in every e-mail that allows you to stop receiving the same kind of e-mail (comment in a watched thread or username mention).

vote-for3vote-against

@sand4me: Click "print preview" and see what happens. :)

vote-for2vote-against

@thefenst: I see the same old crap as per usual (i.e. any comment over a very small amount is cut off). What browser are you using to do this print preview?

vote-for3vote-against

@shrdlu: You are correct. It seems to be working except that long comments are truncated. I will pass this on to the dev team.

vote-for2vote-against

@thefenst: This has always been the case. It hasn't changed from when @sand4me first complained. It may be very difficult to change, considering how comments are stored.

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: You don't actually say, but will this notification be turned on when people that are new ask a question on AtW? That would be about the best news ever, if this is true.

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: When adding a deal or a asking a question the "stay up-to-date" checkbox is by default checked. The submitter has the option to uncheck it before they submit their item.

When commenting on a deal or question the "stay up-to-date" checkbox is by default unchecked.

vote-for4vote-against

@shawnmiller: Thank you very much, then, for helping @hobbit (because she's still the most likely to answer the type of question that most needed this feature). applause

Excellent news.

vote-for2vote-against

@shawnmiller: I noticed that the layout of the text in the emails is not the same as how it appears here. Is there a reason why the formatting is different?

vote-for4vote-against

@sgoman5674: Can you explain further? Screenshot?

vote-for3vote-against

@shawnmiller: want me to email it to you like I did yesterday?

vote-for3vote-against

@shawnmiller: Ok sent via email to your private woot email address and also to service@woot.com.
