I for one hope she moves FAR FAR away from the land of the ice and snow. Hopefully there's some kind of political draft in the near future and we get to trade her to some other state. Maybe we can get California to trade us, kind of like payback for all the sports teams that moved out there...

And lo the great migration to the bible belt begins.

Also, this is a fake story: Daily Currant is like The Onion

I hope she moves in with Sara Palin

vote-for24vote-against

@j5: I've never really read The Daily Currant but The Onion makes me smile. unfortunately way too many people will not pick up on the satire and will circulate this as if it were real.

vote-for8vote-against

@hossdawg97: There's no need to discern truth from satire on The Onion. It's all satire!

vote-for16vote-against

I just wonder how many of these people that rail against gay marriage and use the Bible as their reasoning have actually actually read Leviticus. Because it's pretty interesting with its animal sacrifices and priests with special powers and abilities and stonings and being unclean till evening and whatnot. Shouldn't you get with all of it instead of picking and choosing what you're going to follow if that's your thing?

vote-for11vote-against

@first2summit: The Onion is well known to be satire, the Daily Currant not so much, hence people mistaking satirical articles as true.

@zuiquan: Shhhh, logic has no place when defending one's predispositions.

Sorry, but downvote for fake news/story.

Edit: And I'll probably be downvoted for downvoting, but at least I explain why.

vote-for16vote-against

The Currant claims another! But it is still hilarious.

vote-for11vote-against

It is a shame that it isn't true. That said, she is not originally from MN - as she mentioned in her run for the presidential nomination - she is originally from Iowa. Maybe she'll head south and go back home?

vote-for5vote-against

This may be a fake news story, but you could totally see her doing that, couldn't you?

vote-for11vote-against

@first2summit: Umm, yeah, I already knew that. But, that hasn't stopped some people and organizations from mistakenly taking it seriously from time to time. My personal favorite was in 2012 when the Chinese Communist Party newspaper The People's Daily ran with The Onion's "Kim Jong-Un Named The Onion's Sexiest Man Alive For 2012" story. According to Wikipedia he People's Daily web site included a 55-page photo gallery with the article in tribute to the North Korean leader.

vote-for11vote-against

The Daily Currant is more sophisticated and subtle with their articles, so it's much easier for folks to mistake it for a real news outlet.

OTOH, Michele Bachmann pretty much always sounds as if she's speaking satirically, so she's a low-hanging-fruit kind of target, so to speak.

vote-for14vote-against

@ki4rxm: I, too, downvoted for the perpetuation of the fake story as real. I also upvoted your comment (should I have downvoted because you were wrong about being downvoted?...hmmmm).

vote-for11vote-against

@hossdawg97: unfortunately, with the way our political climate is spiraling into lunacy, it is becoming harder and harder to determine what is satire and what is actual news. more and more in the last couple years, i keep hearing legitimate news stories that sound like something straight out of "Canadian Bacon"

vote-for8vote-against

Has anyone that has threatened to leave the country (or in this case, the state) because of politics ever actually left? That is the most empty threat in the history of civilization - unless you count God smiting you.

vote-for8vote-against

@ryanwb: I can't name any off the top of my head but I do recall hearing of people who actually left the US for Canada after GWB was elected.

vote-for13vote-against

The Daily Currant fools people because, unlike The Onion, it just isn't funny. It is simply bad satire, if it even qualifies as satire.

Where The Onion satirizes using absurdity to highlight the absurdity of the subject matter (as when, after 9/11, it reported on God clarifying his position on "thou shall not kill"), the Daily Currant's brand of satire merely invents a story which represents an incrementally logical step of the absurd subject matter; it is a person with ignorant beliefs saying something perhaps a little more ignorant than usual. Good satire would be the enactment actually causing a Judgment Day, and Bachmann being the voice of reason ("Didn't I say this would happen?") to illustrate that opposition to gay marriage is ridiculous and Bachmann is not a voice of reason.

As much as I am fired up about opposition to equal rights, I am at this moment even more fired up about bad comedy.

vote-for6vote-against

@lparsons42: Those stories are always around no matter who wins so I tend to think they're all a big load of B.S.

vote-for8vote-against

@ryanwb: The problem with the "God smiting you" thing is that if you wait long enough, something bad is going to happen to pretty much anybody, and then you can say, "See? Smitten!" Westboro Baptist is just an extreme version of that concept.

vote-for10vote-against

@lparsons42: Of course, Iowa has had gay marriage for a few years now. I'm sure the smiting is, y'know, imminent.

vote-for8vote-against

The Bible also says that any woman who is not a virgin on her wedding night should be stoned to death. Considering the recent news reports that people are waiting longer and longer for marriage, I am guessing all the non virgin unmarried folks might piss God off to.

That or we just admit the truth is that the idea of two guys is gross for most folks and get over it, the same way we do with two fat people kissing each other in public.

vote-for3vote-against

@j5: You had to ruin it, didn't you?

vote-for10vote-against

@wisenekt: Sure Leviticus condemns homosexuality. It also condemns eating shellfish and pork and other things people do pretty much every day.

“You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material." Leviticus 19:19

"You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard."
Leviticus 19:27

People seem pretty comfortable picking what parts of the Bible in general and Leviticus in particular they wish to observe. Personally I try to stick with "Judge not lest ye be judged". Matthew 7

@dupedyetagain: haha! i can only assume you're familiar with "Seinfeld". Your last line reminded me of the episode where Jerry's dentist converted to Judaism and soon after started telling a bunch of lame jewish jokes. At some point in the episode Jerry says "i'm not offended as a jew, i'm offended as a comedian".

i'm familiar with your sentiment, there is nothing worse than an unfunny comedian. (Larry the Cable Guy)

Voting up or down aside, this made me laugh. And, as it happens, I needed a laugh. All is right with my world, now.

So, thanks for that!

@jrs1980: That's why we went through the drought last year. Belated smiting. Seriously, I don't want her in Iowa either.

If only we could drive away career politicians by not doing what their platform says we should... That would be a great place to live, almost, like a country I've read about... in a US history book...

Can someone explain how a question with a negative aggregate vote becomes popular? I mean without the BS about how it was "positive" when it became popular and then became negative...I didn't see that here. @shawnmiller, any parting shots?

@jsimsace: click-throughs?
No such thing as bad publicity.

j5 j5
vote-for3vote-against

@mamajamerson: at least someone saw the humor in it...

vote-for2vote-against

@jsimsace: I think it is click throughs, plus the number of comments and the number of votes on the comments. If you tallied all the plus and minus votes for the whole thread this still has a lot of votes in it. While I don't think that algorithm is right for deals, I think it is good for discussions. If people are interested in the discussion it isn't important if the question that started it was a bad one.
