Man and I thought that I did a couple of nice cars back in the day. I really hope this is real but I'm not sure if you can get that length just from the kit alone.

@wisenekt: It looks real to me, the amount of length between the wheels and the length overhanging the wheels looks OK too. It's hard to tell the dimensions from the picture, though.

I still vividly remember my first derby. I got my arse kicked by the pros and almost cried in disappointment.

@eraten: My first one I had the fastest car there. It was just too bad I didn't figure that out until after the official heats. Who would have thought it would have been a lot faster back end first?

My kids first year, I worked really hard on his car. I was told all the dads do the first car for the kids. Read internet weight distribution methods. Learned to slightly turn the wheels so less touch the track, but not enough to get disqualified. File and polish the nails.
To test the car we made a ramp with a very low angle. I would set the car on the ramp and see if it would start to roll, when it did I lowered the angle and 'tuned' the wheels. Had removable weight to get as close to limit.
So when we get to the competition I go to sign in, I found out the car was vs all the other cars, not just the first year cars I feel guilty because of the work I put in. When I come back my boy is playing with the car on the floor. I laughed as my guilt diminished, the boy in 1 minute reduced amount of work I put into it and he leveled the playing field. Unfortunately the car still did very good.
Then next year we had a 'dad's division' I made a batmobile looking car.

Yea, looks legit to me, and I'm a former Pinewood Derby Champion. True story.

It would probably do pretty dang well, too. A lot of people go for a simple wedge design, but pointing the tip is what got my car its victories.

The length is exactly as from the kit, unaltered.
The weight of the actual wood and wheels was 1.5 ounces. "Engines" added about 1/2 ounce. I used flexible magnets to build the "command center" but it still wasn't enough weight so I had to slice out 2 inches of wood just in front of the back wheels to insert lead slugs to get it to 5 ounces.
Polished shafts, liberal graphite, and (luckily) the wheels ran true so I didn't need to adjust steering.
The thing beat the entire field but only if the stop rested on the very tip (difficult) resting on the shoulder made the wheels hit the center track and lost speed (lost one heat because of that)

@j5: Very cool! Now if I could convince my boys to go with the Star Wars theme. They seem to prefer the harder to make Pokemon themed cars.

I remember it being pretty difficult to get to the proper weight. I think we used BBs for one of them.

@lotsofgoats: Our pack used washers, coins and superglue. Not very high tech. My other car was a brick of gold. It came in 3rd. :)

The secret to a fast PWD car is in the axels. Most leagues will allow you to buff the axels. I used an 800 grit sand paper and then a polishing compound and polishing cloth. If you do it right you can get a lot less friction creating a perfect axel. The rest of the design is weight placement and aero dynamics. The more narrow the car the less drag it creates. I won every year that I was in cub scouts and my brother won every year he was involved. We just followed some tips from my granddad. My son will likely follow suit once he is old enough.

I still have my record setting car from age 11. Its still the fastest I have seen in 20+ years. It actually won in a 1lb league a few years ago with no modifications from regulation weight.

@capguncowboy: Running true is critical also, maybe more so since wheels rubbing the center rail adds much more friction than rough shafts.
What's a 1lb league? 16oz cars?

@j5: Yes, it's a league where the regulation weight has been changed from 5oz to 16oz. We ran my car without adding any weight (so it weighed 4.9 oz) and it still won against the 1 lb cars.

I need to see if I can get it entered into some local races, but there doesn't seem to be much of that locally anymore. Perhaps it's time to start something.
