Can someone help? I cannot shut down my netbook.
I have an Asus netbook that I purchased from Woot. It has been OK until today. Went online due to change of isp and new network, etc. Cannot close it down The message on the screen "windows is shutting down" Control/alt/delete does not do it. The switch does not do it. I guess I can wait until the battery is dead, but I really would like to handle this prior to that if possible. Suggestions?

Take out the battery and unplug.
Does it have a removable battery? Unplug it from the power, and remove the battery. You should be all set from there.
@falcondeal: It must. I have never removed the bottom of pad. I had hoped there might be a better way, but I am game to attack it.
@ganzhimself: I am going to do it with the sequence - uplug - first that you gave.
@klozitshoper: Have you tried holding down the power button... Usually that will kill my laptop.
@klozitshoper: Hope I'm not too late. I have an Asus netbook. Unless they have changed the design, your battery is on the bottom, toward the back edge. There should be 2 slide buttons. Just slide them and push the battery out, toward the back away from you. (the battery should be at the top edge of your computer, when you have it face down.)
You could always open up the command prompt and shutdown the computer from there.
Click Start
All Programs
Accessories
Right-Click Command Prompt
Select Run As Administrator
In the window that opens Type: shutdown
@theselected: That won't work... "The message on the screen 'windows is shutting down'"
Just hold down the power button. It will shut off in about 4-5 seconds. I hope I'm not too late
@barnabee: Thanks, I figured it was on the bottom and was looking for a tiny screwdriver to undo it - could not find. Thanks for telling me where the battery is. While I was looking it up line on how to change (and finding nothing), it suddenly shut itself down. I rebooted it, and it was flickering all over the place. Screen doing crazy things. Finally it stabilized fairly well, and I was able to shut it down. It did hang for a bit on the process and screen saying windows shutting down but it did power itself off. I would have never, ever found the battery without searching through all my mountains of papers here at my desk. I dislike this netbook and rarely use it. Thank you so much.
@capguncowboy: I had tried that - was actually thinking of throwing it in the pool - but then thought about all the helpful wooters and figured I could get help.
THANK YOU EVERYBODY - You are all great. Perhaps screen was flickering because in turning the darned thing upside down, the battery compartment had become loose? Who knows. I am going to put it back on the kitchen counter and ignore it. Glad I could not find the tiny screwdriver for which I was looking.
@klozitshoper: I was going to suggest you use it to smack whatever Republican candidate shows up in your town tonight or tomorrow; that kind of sudden impact with a rock-hard head would probably convince it to shut down. I'm just glad they're out of my city for the duration.
Edit: Is this the 10" model? I bought one of those and it's all that saved my sanity during a recent six-week stint of confinement to bed with a broken leg. Propped the little think on my tummy and stayed connected to the world!
Edit 2: The above is not political commentary. I'm just desperate to get them all of Florida and -- one hopes -- off our airwaves. I don't know how the Iowa and New Hampshire people stand it.
I'm surprised no one suggested a sledgehammer.
