It depends. Sometimes a deal that's getting downvotes has also been tattled on as spam or fraud (not necessarily the same), or one of the many forbidden types of deals (such as contests, or mystery boxes). Those are deleted, whenever the tattles bubble up to the person handling them. Now, sometimes staff are busy putting out real fires, and something may just fall by the wayside.

If it's truly crap, you should go back and tattle on it again. You did tattle on it the first time, right? So that staff would know it needed to be deleted (and perhaps even to block yet another site)???

The infamous Netflix sponsored deal got a ton and a half of downvotes, and it's still out there, floating around, an object of scorn and pity. Well, maybe not pity.

Not that I know of. I think they just get buried...or maybe cremated.

What's the deal you're talking about?

@shrdlu: I seem to be riding your coattails in the questions today :)

@shrdlu: I think there is a worthwhile distinction between crap and snake oil. The deal I was thinking of falls under the latter. Frankly I don't think it is automatically bad to have snake oil items listed as some people will buy them regardless.

Hence I did not tattle on the item I'm thinking of, as I didn't see it as necessary.

@okham: The item I was thinking of this time is a Wii "HDMI upconverter". They show up here in various iterations all the time, claiming to take the Wii 480p signal and make it into 1080p awesomeness.

Really, they should just say they are Wii-to-HDMI adapters and they'd be 100% correct. But instead they try to assign magical abilities to them. However I don't think they should be prohibited from deals.woot, either; but that's just my point of view on the matter.

@lparsons42: I think you did the right thing, then. I'd have probably done the same. Some things should be deleted, but honestly, if someone really believes the hype on expensive cables, they should go for it. They can have my share of them.

Here's the deal I was thinking of:

Dang. What I want to know is, who are the brave 50 upvotes on that corpse? That was one crazy day.

@lparsons42: Yeah, that's more of a buyer beware than spam. Not quite as good as the wig deals popping up a while ago...

And that Netflix deal was excellent. @thefenst 's rep is still recovering.

vote-for6vote-against

@okham: I actually checked on that. Sponsored deals do not affect reputation. @thefenst just doesn't post other deals, for the most part. He doesn't ask questions, and he doesn't do a lot of voting. He's everyone's number one hero when it comes to problems with vendors, though.

There's some nice folks at Deals...at Woot general, too.

I have noticed that if a deal starts going negative, the OP will RIP it, so that no one else can neg it.
