Have you ever been to a Con before?
At the age of 21, I have finally attended my first con; Arisa, a sci-fi/fantasy convention held in Boston. I have to say, it really has blown me away. Words cannot even describe how amazing this whole thing is (also a lack of sleep adds the issue of "no words")
I'll just get to the point since I'm unable to think straight (I keep making typos every 5 seconds...) Have you ever been to a con? What kind? Do you ever want to go to one? Does the idea of being surrounded by hundreds of nerds frighten you?
The best part of this con: It's not over yet.
If you happen to be here, I'm dressed as various versions of the Matt Smith Doctor. Today I'm being chased by the silence. FIND ME!

The ONLY conventions I would ever attend would be:
Tokyo Game Show
E3
PAX (Penny Arcade Expo)
CAX (California Extreme)
GC (Games Convention)
MagFest
QuakeCon
All of which are gaming cons that I would pay to travel/attend. If I was in the area of an AnimeCon I might stop by to check it out, but nothing I would actually go out of my way to attend.
I've been to Defcon the last 4 years. I also attend CES which isn't a CON but a great event to attend.
I've never been to a Con, but I really really want to. If I can save up enough monies, I'm going to try to go to Comic-Con in San Diego one summer. But those days are far ahead of me and my mind may surely change between now and then, although I don't think it will.
Went to San Diego Comic Con for ... I think 16 years. I had to say that 2011 was the last, though.
- It used to be that with a week's notice, one can find a room relatively close without an issue or breaking one's budget.
- It used to be that on a whim, one could walk up the morning to get a day's pass, which I did end up doing a couple years (took Amtrak from Fullerton in the morning, returned that evening).
- It used to be that one could find a parking space without too many issues.
But the biggest reason I'm not returning in 2012 ...
- It used to be fun, affordable, and NOT centered around Hollywood ...
I'm getting old, I can't justify $150/night for a motel that's 30 miles out from the con, and I don't care enough about Hollywood to want to deal with that kind of crowd.
I went to CES a couple years ago when they had the Adult Entertainment Expo going on the same weekend. I'd have rather attended the latter.
I've loved going to Wondercon in SF for the past several years. I won't be going this year since it's Anaheim, just not THAT interested enough to make the trip. Speaking at least for the past shows in SF, it's a great event. It's big, though not as big as San Diego Comic Con, and pulls together a great mix of exhibitors and events. Saturdays tended to be the big movie day with celebrities pitching their upcoming flicks. At past shows, I've seen Kevin Smith, JJ Abrams, Nicholas Cage, Zack Snyder, Steve Carrell, and lots more.
I've been to local Star Trek, Sci-Fi, and Comic conventions. I love them. You'll see people dressed up in costume and taking it very seriously (as you are?). Artist alley is always a fun stroll. Some of the sessions can be quite informative and/or entertaining. At the ComicCon last year, we got hear Leonard Nimoy.
@thunderthighs: (That moment where you hit control+v and erase all your text. FFFFFFFFFFFF) Me? Serious? NEVER! I can't speak for all the people playing The Doctor, but there was this running thing that if you approached a Doctor you would aknowledge them with "Doctor." to which the appropriate reply was "Doctor." At one point, there were 8 of us standing together and we had a seemingly endless "Doctor." exchange.
Remember when I mentioned a lack of sleep? Funny story... So I ran into an 8th Doctor and the Master standing near a Dalek. the exchange went like this:
8th: Doctor.
Me: Doctor.
The Master: Doctor.
Me: Doctor.
*awkward silence
Me: I mean MASTER! Sorry, I'm tired.
Master: Hello Doctor.
Me: ...I see you have your sonic laser.
*more awkward silence
Me: I MEAN LASER SCREWDRIVER! I swear I really am a fan of this show!!!
@abramokids: Tsk, tsk. I'm not sure you'll be invited back...
:)
I've been to the following cons:
E3
PAX (Prime only)
Steamcon (a local steampunk con, um, obviously)
GeekGirlCon
Norwescon
I'm looking forward to Emerald City Comicon this year.
We do a few small Cons each year and one or two large Cons depending on the budget. DragonCon during Labor Day weekend in Atlanta is an always
