Is Facebook just the "next big thing"?
Facebook is about to go public, and some people are saying it is overvalued, others state that the stock is the "buy of the decade".
Over the last 25 years we have seen how technology progresses, and how consumer demand changes.
In my lifetime I have seen technology change every few years. No Home Computers...Atari...Commodore 64...PC...WWW...Email...IRC...Chat-rooms...Instant Messenger...Cell Phones...Text Messaging...Whatever Else.
Is Facebook just here today because nobody has created the next social media yet?

It's possible. We can't predict the future, but hey, look at myspace. It's still big, right?
More like: The Last Big Thing whose time is about over. Twitter probably reins as the Now Thing whose time will be over next year. The Next Thing is still in the works somewhere.
Of course Facebook will fade out. But it is a step in the natural evolution of online interface. It won't be able to keep up with the latest changes in innovation and it will fade. The good thing is, before it does fade away, it will be part of the development of integration between multiple websites. I am so glad that I can just click on facebook login when I go to some of my favorite web sites now. This aspect will surely continue to develop into needing only one login per computer session. Finally, I won't need to keep a list of passwords that meet the ridiculous criteria of all the websites I use.
Facebook's goin' doooowwwn
Facebook has outgrown its usefulness. It's just part of the machine now. It's only a matter of 3-4 years until it's the new Myspace, in my guestimation.
Yeah, they should have gone public earlier (although not sure if that was possible with their legal issues.) But of course I laughed at Google's $100 IPO and they're not over $600. However, everyone I know still uses Google but I've noticed several people getting over Facebook and deleting their profiles, including me.
Like others said. Something is past the point of being the "next big thing" when everyone's grandmother and teenage relative is using it. Facebook's staying time is probably going to be longer than Myspace ever achieved. There's also several companies with multimillion dollar income solely based on gaming via Facebook. Pretty sure that will help extend the shelf life of Facebook.
Hard to say what the next big thing will be. In terms of social sites, I really like G+ when compared to Facebook but there's just not enough users on there at this time.
