questionsis it me, or is this now freestuff.woot.com?

It's true, it's like people are just searching for free samples and posting them.

vote-for7vote-against

The question you have to ask is are the "free" deals really free. What do you have to sign up for and how much spam are you going to get?

vote-for16vote-against

People vote them up.

There are one or two people doing nothing but posting every silly pointless deal that has something for free. It's getting to the point that every time I see "FREE" I want to pop someone in the belly. Violence. It's not just for breakfast.

I've voted for one or two, but mostly I ignore them. It's sad, actually, because if there's anything worthwhile out there, it just vanishes in the noise. If I were in charge, I'd find a way around letting so many get posted. Most of them are nothing but blatant info gatherers, and so many people are willing to give up all sorts of personal information for the pettiest of trinkets. I've almost quit looking at the Popular deals page. There are interesting deals, but they just never make it there.

It seems like it's mostly the work of one person:

vote-for3vote-against

I was beginning to wonder the same thing. It is kind of a turn off to see a bunch of 'free' stuff that often isn't even really free posted as a deal.

vote-for6vote-against

Free can be a deal, but it rarely is. And a free sample is never a deal worth posting.

The free stuff is getting WAY out of hand and I am beginning to wonder if it is a marketing firm trying to get their products out there.

Maybe give us an option to filter out certain tags and then we can filter out the free tags.

vote-for5vote-against

@hobbit:

I 2nd that...

The real bummer is that many quality deals are NOT getting votes... and these "free" deals are hogging up the prime real estate.

Must be what the people want. I guess...

vote-for4vote-against

@mmiteshm: I note that the preponderence of deals you've posted lately were of the free variety. You aren't alone, of course, but you certainly might consider the effect you have on the site as a whole, when more interesting things are crowded out by reusable tote bags available only to the people living in Cathedral City, and so on. I do point out that clicking on your usertab, at the time I posted that comment, gave 100% deals that were offers for "free" stuff, at some random distribution that I still cannot fathom.

I don't actually understand why you (and the others) are doing it. I can understand people posting affiliate linked things; they're trying to make money. If you're looking to somehow increase your reputation, or otherwise gain some notice on the Leaderboard, you're certainly well on the way, but to what point? It's just a web site. This doesn't gain you actual respect, not here, and certainly not in real life.

Sigh.

vote-for3vote-against

@mbrugnoni: See, it doesn't take much to push a deal up and over onto Popular. All you need are 8 or 10 committed folk, and it'll happen. I really wish that Woot Staff would consider the suggestion about limiting the number of posts from a specific poster. Sure, there would still be FREE posts, but there has to be some way to rate limit the silliness so that worthwhile things have a chance. Otherwise, it's just the lolcat craziness of Woot Offs, and that might be funny for a day or two, but not long term.

vote-for3vote-against

The whole free thing is just a phase, just like when this place was goodsofanadultnature.woot.com, that was just a phase too. This will pass too.

vote-for2vote-against

@shrdlu: I'm guilty for voting at least a few of those free things up.

vote-for3vote-against

True and a lot of the 'free' stuff hasn't even been free. Now the free tea sample was awesome. But I saw one last week that wasn't cool. The deal said Free umbrella or something like that, but when you clicked on the deal it was a free umbrella with the purchase of some 200.00 item. That isn't even a deal. Now I can spend my time going through all the free crap, but I have better things to do, unless Woot would like to pay me.

vote-for1vote-against

It also seems to have gotten worse with the new leaderboard - NOT that I don't love it. But since it shows posting trends. I am guessing Google picks that up, thus driving more people to want to post not really free stuff on the front page, because they think it is in indeed popular.

vote-for7vote-against

I too think its getting out of hand. Most people looking for freebie samples, etc probably already belong to sites, lists or boards that list them daily.

Another thing getting out of hand are the "Deal of the Day" posts that don't even list what the deal is, nevermind the price. "Weekly deals/specials" posts fall into that category as well in my opinion and should be stopped.

PS And if anything is posted with no price listed, I won't even look at it.

vote-for2vote-against

I voted up a free uniball pen when I first started with deals.woot, then I noticed all of the other free things and then thought it was not so neat that I could get a free uniball pen. Sad days....

vote-for6vote-against

@diehardferret: we have all voted up some free items. Some have been worthwhile. I think folks are just voting up stuff now with out even looking at the actual deal.

vote-for3vote-against

I'm trying to demonstrate how the "free" items are not the best deals by posting alternative items that are less money and including a comment pointing to the alternate deal.

Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. Like @hobbit said, some just vote up free items without really looking at them. If individuals don't take time to read comments, it probably won't help. :(

vote-for2vote-against

@catbertthegreat: There was the bacon phase, too. That seems to have tapered-off a bit.

It's interesting to see the ebb and flow of a growing community. Sometimes strange things get left on the beach during low tide...

vote-for6vote-against

@weakgeek: bacon is funny though, it will probably always be around. The free stuff isn't. I was making comments in some of the deals about how they weren't really deals. Like that one for the umbrella, or whatever it was, that came free with the 200.00 purchase. Today the site seems to be free of free stuff though.

vote-for2vote-against

@weakgeek: I like the USB power adapter. I do not need the cigarette lighter plug, but most people would find the combination useful. This item sure beats the other adapter. It is 2x better, price and capability.

vote-for6vote-against

As long as it is a real deal, I don't care if it is a good price or free.

The ones I have a problem with are one day deals that aren't labelled as such. Then you click on it a day later, and it is totally different. It seemed like I was tattling on an expired deals every few minutes yesterday.

vote-for3vote-against

@mjc613: Get used to it. @hobbit and @shrdlu can give you a few tips on this.

vote-for2vote-against

@mjc613: Tattling is fine. We do it all the time. I am not at all a big fan of one day deals on this site either. We have asked for a flash table for those deals since they are going to expire in 24 hours, and they clutter up the popular and fresh tab which should be used for real deals anyway not daily deals, or ebay deals, or other one off stuff.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm just wondering when the spam and hack and stolen account stuff will happen to the people who clicked through to the "free stuff". Yes, some items are legit, but the vast majority of people clicking to get a "free" .03 cent item are either suckers or fools. I would imagine that within 45 days they will be posting negative comments on the Boards about these sites.

Nothing is truly free.

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: I have no problem with the suggestions to put these deals in their own tab, but I don't understand saying they're not "real deals".

If something is being sold at a significant discount, then that's a good deal. Besides, all deals end at some point, whether they have a clock on them or not.

Even if 'flash deals' went into their own tab, I'd still want to see them feed into the Popular tab if they get enough votes.

@ecriscit: see my comments in the first reply to http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/f24feaa4-3923-416c-9ba3-3805ec369cc1/free-dunkin-donuts-coffee-in-store-this-time#2

vote-for1vote-against

I was going to say something good, I realized that what I have to say isn't important.

vote-for2vote-against

@anotherhiggins: this is not a free deal you have to open an account with the bank to get the free magazine. How is that a deal? http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/fd8db1c0-1043-46a5-8a3a-d1619dd7b343?sort=oldest&page=1&newCommentId=f50e09a0-eb61-4540-b9e8-4644888d0750#f50e09a0-eb61-4540-b9e8-4644888d0750

free for me is like the kungaloosh tea deal. Where we got free samples, heck I woul have even paid shipping on that one, well probably not but now that I know how yummy the tea is.

vote-for2vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Oh wait you were talking about the daily deals. Well that wasn't my idea. I personally think daily deals don't belong here at all, this isn't dailydeals.woot.com

vote-for3vote-against

@hobbit: Right, I was talking specifically about the time-limited deals.

You'll get no argument from me about how annoying non-free "free" deals are.

vote-for2vote-against

@anotherhiggins: I don't know for me a whole page of daily deals from another site just doesn't seem right it is like deals.woot is advertising for them and I just think that is wrong on so many levels at least on the fresh page.

vote-for1vote-against

I actually like the daily deals, as I check this site several times a day, but again they'd be more effective if we had the opportunity to RIP our own deals.

One thing just floored me though and should be stopped at all costs, someone listed a CONTEST! Yes, a contest. How is that even remotely considered a deal?

vote-for2vote-against

@selene1212: So, you tattled on the contest you saw, right?

Trust me, @hobbit and I have seen pretty much everything, including more than one MLM. That's right, we've had people post "deals" that were the sleaziest kind of multi-level marketing scams.

vote-for1vote-against

@shrdlu: Of course! I tattle on everything I think shouldn't be here. Not that it does any good... The contest listing is still up.

ETA: OMG! An edit button!!!

vote-for1vote-against

The weird thing is that this is much better than any dedicated free samples site/forum I've been on. Deals.woot has more posts is kept more updated than any of the other sites.

vote-for2vote-against

I look mostly for free things.. maybe they need to separate free from deals?

vote-for5vote-against

wah wah wah is all I hear... dont like it...make your own website. I like getting free stuff ...its like festivus everytime I go to the mailbox.

vote-for3vote-against

I vote on the free stuff that I receive. I actually use heyitsfree.com because Goob checks stuff out to make sure it's not spam & also lets you know when the offer is expired. I have received lots of free stuff, and I get very little junk email.

vote-for3vote-against

Wow, I didn't realize people felt this way about the free stuff. I like free stuff, I'll admit it. It used to be you'd get free samples in the mail from companies without asking for them. Now I can find items I would like and order them. Some people do innocently put a deal up on a free product not knowing it is a spam site. Yes, there is spam stuff out there and I try to be selective about what I order and post. But getting a sample or free items is a good way to test out a company or product. I got free Atkins bars and I loved them. I got the uniball pen and I like it, would consider buying more.
Maybe there should be a way to filter the free ads so people who don't like them don't see them, but free stuff shouldn't be eliminated.

vote-for1vote-against

I think deals.woot has already begun to eliminate free item posts from being marked as popular. I posted this (before I read this thread): http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/c04e7092-f0f0-4e67-85a6-514df3a61fed/free-heart-shaped-pedometer#4 and it is not listed as popular. But that's ok with me. Even if they get rid of free stuff posts I love deals.woot.

vote-for0vote-against

I just joined and don't understand how you get free stuff on here, need help!!

vote-for2vote-against

I'd love to have a freestuff.woot.com section!

I did a search for "free -shipping" and signed up for everything, and now, I need more free stuff to sign up for.

vote-for1vote-against

Seriously. I love the free stuff. And to those saying "it's not really free, they are going to spam you/steal your info"...

Who uses real info for those sample sites anyway? I sure don't... Fake/Spam email address + Fake name (like Malcom Flex or Harriet Thugman).

If a deal is mis-advertising or a scam, that has nothing to do whether its free or not. I've seen plenty of deals that mis-advertise that aren't free. And a scam is a scam, don't kill the free stuff because a few of then aren't legit.

vote-for1vote-against

@unique616: Ditto, I'd probably check freestuff.woot.com every day and put it on my RSS reader too.

vote-for2vote-against

I think free.woot is something a lot of people would appreciate...I know it's something we've talked about for awhile.

As for the free BS clouding the real deals, I don't think it's an issue of moderation...but one more of placement.

Giving an area for the free stuff to roam free would not only add a new section for woot addicts to check obsessively, it would also serve the very needed purpose of un-cluttering our deals.woot.

I haven't read the majority of the other posts on account of I'm tired, so if somebody has already said basically that; take this down.

vote-for0vote-against

So what's the resolution on this? We are new here so were posting our own deals but for example here is a free blackberry app was going to post - would that be relevant here?

http://weightlossnyc.com/weight-loss-ny/patient/blackberry.php

vote-for2vote-against

Keep the thread alive!

Free = good.

Well, I just get all my free stuff here. Got over $150 of stuff =D
