A Jewelry Guide
Looking to pull the trigger on some of the jewelry deals posted here, well here are some things you should know.
The Return Policy:
The website you are buying from, even an ebay seller, should have a minimum of a 7 day, no questions asked, full refund, return policy. If you do not like something after you pulled it out of the box, then you should be able to take it back because...
Pictures can be very deceiving.
Online jewelery stores and the jewelers they buy from are very good at photographing their jewelry and cleaning up the images. I'm not calling them crooks, it is their job to sell something and make it look as good as possible to do it. You must rely on the description of the product to help make your decision and the rest of this guide will be written to show you how to make sense of product descriptions.
Because of the length of the guide, the rest of it is located here:

Stupid character limit! The rest of the guide will entail how product descriptions are generally handled and a breakdown of the metals and the more common gemstones used in jewelry. The only thing that is missing is information on the grading systems of pearls and information on pearls in general. It is a long an confusing subject and it will take me a lot longer to write that bit.
So in the meantime follow this guide for buying pearls:
If you think they are pretty and you like the price, than you should buy them.
Hey, thanks for this.
Nice post, @catbertthegreat:. I think the return policy is key. I have a good friend who is a pawnbroker and he says they get stuff in all the time that is advertised as something it clearly is not. He suggests when you get an item to take it to a gemologist or appraiser to authenticate.
Gems are tough it also depends on why you are buying it. I buy a lot of costume jewelry to just wear around, because really I can't afford anything else. I do have quite a lot of vintage pieces that I got from my grandmother which I love, but it is also all fake. If I were actually investing in a gemstone piece I know I would be going to a brick and mortar store, it isn't something I would skimp on, I am just a girl that way. But then when I saw the Tiffany engagement ring I knew I would never want another ring on that finger it is the perfect statement ring for the occaision and symbology.
Oh and Pearls, yea they are tough. Especially since natural pearls are hard to actually find and very expensive. Plus everyone thinks that cultured pearls are fake, which they aren't. I love pearls, I have quite a few cultured pearl pieces.
@hobbit: More importantly there is no consistent grading system for pearls, and because of that, I can't verify peoples claims of having one kind of pearl because the pearls aren't graded in a consistent fashion for comparison.
I hope that makes sense.
@wootvan: Diamonds and the metals used in the settings are easy to detect whether you have been deceived or not. They have tool that test the thermal conductivity over the gem to detect whether you have real diamond or CZ or one of the many diamond substitutes. Another tool measures the electrical conductivity of the metal to tell you what you have and what the karat purity of the metal would be.
