questionshas school started in your area yet?

The community college i work at starts this Thursday, I believe the elementary schools in the area start the week after.

The lower schools (elementary through high) started Wednesday. My school starts a week from Monday.

Public schools start on Wednesday. Yaaay!!!!! Wanna see my handsprings?

The Texas Legislature decreed in 2008 that schools in Texas may not start before the fourth Monday in August. This was due to pressure from the hotel and entertainment industries that were losing money due to shortened summers: lack of tourism money and shortage of students to employ.

Of course, you still have to fit 180 days into that school year.

I'm so glad my son has graduated high school and I don't have to deal with the public school system any more.

@thunderthighs: That's only for public schools and I think it's also related to sports (mostly football). School sports teams can only start official practice a set number of days before the first day of classes. Some schools were pushing to start school earlier so that their teams (again, mostly football) could have more time to practice before games started.
There are a couple of private schools near me that started back last week, a few more start this week. There's only one that I know of that starts after Labor Day.

I think ours start about the 20th.

So glad I don't have to deal with that stuff any longer.

It's winter in Brazil...they had a break starting in mid July and my mind just associated it as summer break...then I started seeing kids going to school at the end of July, and I was like "what the heck! School starts so early here". My fiancee just laughed and was like "It's winter, of course there's not a long break". What makes it worse is that we're closer to the equator, so winter here actually feels like summer where I was from in the states. I'm so confused.

NY City Public school classes start the week of Labor Day, on Thu, Sept 6, though pre-kindergarten classes do not have full days until Mon, Sept 10. Classes end on Wed, June 26, 2013.

There are a total of 30 holidays: Rosh Hashanah (2 days), Yom Kippur, Columbus, Election, and Veterns' Days, Thanksgiving (2 days), Winter Recess (12/22 to 1/1, 7 days), MLKJr Day, mid-Winter Recess (2/16 to 2/24, 5 days), Spring Recess (3/23 to 4/2, 7 days), Memorial Day and Anniversary Day* (June 6).

In addition to these 30 holidays, there are various half-days and full days off for Parent-Teacher Conferences, Staff Development Days, and statewide exams.

*Anniverary Day is a fairly new name; most people call it Brooklyn Queens Day or Founders' Day because it used to only be a holiday only for Brooklyn and Queens schools (two of the five counties that make up NY City). Now it is also a Staff Development Day so it is a school holiday citywide.

Not yet in the mid-Atlantic. 1st day in my county is August 20th.

My daughter went back on Tuesday. It's a bit weird, it seems they go back earlier and earlier every year.

Public school starts here on 8/20. Oldest daughter moves back to college on 8/16. All of the stuff from her dorm room is crammed into her bedroom here, so we have a lot of packing to do in the next few days.

Starts on Monday. I'll have to leave for work earlier.

My sister's kids started this week in Florida. Ohio starts late August. In Michigan we had the same lobby from the tourism industry. So we start Tuesday after Labor Day. Which is fine with me. That's when school started when I was a kid. We go until 2nd week in June. But I homeschool, so we've been doing math all summer. Our co-op starts first Thursday in September, which happened to be before Labor Day last year. After Labor Day most years.
