Does deals.woot regularly remove deals that people post?
Just curious, not upset or anything. I just started posting here (well actively at least) and one of my deals was removed. Was for a free sample of lube. Seeing as there was a huge post about a vat of lube, I don't see the issue with a free sample of lube, but I digress. I searched and there's no conflicting deal, so it wasn't a dupe, so was it perhaps because I added in a youtube video w/ the movie Superbad extolling the virtues of lube?
Just curious as to why they remove things, and why they don't notify. Thanks :)
woot has moderators that have the final say in everything. if something is deemed "inappropriate" they remove it. if it is an insult at someone they remove it. if it is a duplicate they remove it. if you beg them to they might remove something you posted and didn't realize was a bad thing.
they have the final say, and are doing so much that they never have time to notify everyone that something was removed. btw: your "deal" was the subject of a conversation earlier this week (i'll try to find the link).
thank you for all you do woot gods.
Yeah I know the mods do a good job, no disrespect to any of them. I like this place quite a bit, so just wondering. Maybe an email could be sent out with:
Your deal was removed for (x) reason.
My deal? Or the big 'ol vat of lube deal? Lol I didn't post that one, but was pretty epic, gotta say.
@linuxtrance: seem the coversation was also removed. appearantly they have a "no. we don't allow lube or conversations about it." rule too because they removed all evidence of it. i know they try to keep most of this sight pg rated. (which is why i'm guessing they removed a question about why are they allowing ohcheri to post croxxless lingerie).
lube is almost always removed. They even removed my lube deal with a bunch of upvotes a few days ago, a 55 gallon barrel that even included a PUMP!
That conversation (about ohcheri) was one I remember. The important thing to know is that the accusation itself was false.
Certain things aren't allowed, and there's no list of which ones aren't. the conversations about deals that are deleted often veer off into discussions that push the envelope, and are then deleted too.
The request for notification has been made many times, and there are multiple reasons why it isn't going to happen. One of them is the overhead itself. For every deal posted by a member of the community that crossed the line, there's a metric ton of deals that are deleted because they're spam, or from sites that are hosting counterfeits. Any system that's automatic is going to get bogged down in trying to send out emails to those accounts, when the email addresses associated with them are probably not legitimate in the first place.
There is no easy answer to this. It just is what it is.
@shrdlu: Makes sense, and yeah I wasn't wanting this topic to veer off into something inappropriate, and I honestly don't think it has. I've seen lots of ohcheri's deals and I don't have a problem with them.
Also, the point about the emails make sense, just would be a nice addition. Guess there's no easy answer to the problem then.
note to self no more lube posts
@shrdlu: actually i was refering to a question that was asked earlier today, and i had seen the post from ohcheri the individual was referring to. both have been removed (to which i can see both sides of the arguement) but it wasn't an accusation. the question simply ask why woot allowed that type deals, and since they did why did they think s/he would let his/her children look at woot? but back to the subject at hand (sorry)
the type of lube also makes a difference. mechanical lube yes (wd40, pb blaster, liquid wrench). if you would be embaressed if your kid took it to church then no. but also be aware of the no guns/ammo rule, the no mystery package rule, and the no spam rule.
Just for future reference, deals are removed when , I think just the landing page, but maybe the whole site, has a NSFW image(s). Sounds like this one would have been removed anyway, I never knew lube was verboten.
@linuxtrance: glad you liked my 55 gallon barrel deal. Since that was more of a joke, I thought maybe they'd have a sense of humor and leave it.
I seriously +1 the request for notification when a deal is removed. It shouldn't be that hard for them to code a drop down menu with 3 or 4 options when a mod clicks "delete" and they just click which box and then the sytem sends out an auto-email "your deal was removed because it is __"
What I find more annoying is when a post/comment/answer is removed that contained nothing whatsoever offensive, and was obviously intended as humorous gets removed. That's when you get the feeling you pissed off some bored moderator and they're now doing a search of all your posts.
Yes, this goes on at just about any & all internet forums, I've been a mod at a site with 20,000+ members for over 6 years, and am guilty of doing it once or twice in my early days there myself, and have seen it all over the place.
Lol I was staff on a huge forum for a few years (2968288 members as of right now- not saying the name of the forum, but it's initials are WBB) and I would do the same thing at times, if someone got out of line they'd become an example. I've seen one or two of my Woot comments deleted for no apparent reason, but comes with the territory I guess, doesn't piss me off like it would have years back
