What are your top 3 favorite Christmas songs (with artist)?
I'm gonna go with the 1980's:
"Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band Aid. Once I paid attention to the lyrics as a kid, it made me cry.
"Last Christmas" - Wham. I have no idea why I like this song so much.
"Do You Hear What I Hear" - Whitney Houston. So very stirring and inspirational.
Ave Maria - Harry Connick, Jr
Christmas in Hollis - Run D.M.C.
Little Dealer Boy - Willie Nelson and The Rev. Sir Dr. Stephen T. Mos Def Colbert, D.F.A., Heavyweight Champion of the World**
- I know it as "Shchedryk," but in English it's "Carol of the Bells," a traditional Ukie song. It's one of those incredibly powerful ethno-cultural emotion-memory things for me. Powerful and gorgeous, in any language.
-"Santa Baby," Eartha Kitt. And her version only! Eartha makes it a sexy, campy come-on to a loved partner. Every other version is just tawdry, shallow ickiness.
-"All I Want For Christmas Is You," Mariah Carey. Because it's adorable, ebullient, and so damned positive. F'serious, it never fails to cheers me up, even without a "you" to want. It's just such a sweet, joyous song.
Oh, and these're my top three sad Christmas songs (they're probably everyone's, right? Hells, they're likely the only ones):
-"A Fairytale of New York," The Pogues.
-"Last Christmas," Wham.
-"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," Judy Garland.
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" the Judy Garland version
"12 Days of Christmas" the Straight No Chaser version
"Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" by the Ramones
All I want for Christmas is You - Michael Buble
Last Christmas - Wham
Mary Do You Know - Kenny G
