It sounds like you are looking for a headset if you need volume control and a mic?
When it comes to headphones i've always heard the 'you get what you pay for' so its a good thing to invest money in.
Earbuds are good for blocking unwanted noise.

Save your money and get a pair of Grado SR60i. Search around the web. They will run between $70 and $90, but you get these benefits: They're tough as nails, built like a tank, make you look like you just teleported from the 1970s straight out of a disco, but most importantly of all, they reproduce music very well. I've had cheaper pairs, but the cheaper pairs have always left me dissatisfied. The Grado SR60i headphones give you listening pleasure that's at the sweet spot for quality sound reproduction without spending hundreds for a set of good cans aka quality headphones. They're also very comfortable, and you don't have to listen to things as loudly to hear the same details in the music, which saves your hearing. Or you can crank it up and hope one day researchers come up with a better hearing aid or a replacement for the human ear drum. I've had my SR60s for going on 3 years now, and they still sound and fit great.

Phillips she9550. You can get them usually for about $20 if you search online. They're the best sounding and most comfortable earphones I've ever had even though they're cheaper than other pairs i've had.

My first pair lasted 3 months but I called them up and they sent me a new pair without any hassle (they didn't even make me send back my broken pair for proof). It came 3 days after I called. This pair has lasted so far for about 7 months and are still working great.

Try looking at this site called Good Headphones. I don't know what you consider inexpensive, but Good Headphones has headphones broken into price range categories from $200 and over down to $50-$25. You should find the information you need to find a nice pair of headphones.
