Two options that you probably won't like are Best Buy trade-in program and a pawn shop. You are likely to get pennies on the dollar of the value of the computer, though. Useful if you need quick money for a fix, but not so useful if you want to get close to full value for your item.

I deal with eBay all the time...it is no different than real life. Good people and bad people. In HUNDREDS of transactions, what you are describing has never happened to me. It sounds like a 1/1,000,000,00 type thing.

and your question of what site...why would any other site have more honest and fair patrons? You are at least protected on eBay by seller protection. AND, remember that buyers need protecting also....probably more than sellers on the internet.

Agora Classifieds at Ars Technica is full of awesome computer buyers and sellers despite slowing down considerably over the last few years. You won't get "eBay money", but ask a fair price and your computers may interest some reputable buyer. Good luck!

@morriea: Not saying another site would have more honest patrons, but ebay has given a lot of power to the buyer and it sounds like scammers have taken advantage of that. I may use ebay and hope for the best...
