You need to buy a TiVo wireless adapter...

There might be other ways to get it done, but this is how I'm doing it.

I was looking at these. Do I need anything else? I'm still hard wired with my computer. Will this let me make my laptop wireless? I have Time Warner. Can you explain how this works in really simple terms? Thanks

You will also need a wireless router. If you don't have one, the TiVo wireless adapter won't do you any good. Alternately, if you only have the option of being hard wired, and don't have a router at all, you can plug your TiVo into your modem via network cable and force an update.

Ok so lets assume I'm going to be hardwired. So I just get an ethernet cable, plug it into the back of my Tivo and then into my modem? Then what? Does this eliminate the need for a phone cord? I just do not get this stuff at all. Obviously.

@minkeygirl7: If you plug your modem directly into your TIVO you should get internet connectivity. If you have a cable modem that connects to a router, just plug an Ethernet cord into one of its 4-8 ports and send it to your TIVO, either will work.

Also if you have any geek friends they will most likely know how to help you in person

Oh, and you should go wireless. It saves a lot of hassle/cord stringing/cord routing IMO :)

This is a great question because I've been puzzled by this. Thanks for explaining it in simple terms.

@promyst: I contacted Tivo yesterday and I was told that my modem only has one IP address so the Tivo wouldn't recognize it. She told me to get a router. I sadly have no geek friends so I'm sort of on my own for this. I mean I don't even know if I have a router if I have a modem. I hate being dumb about this stuff. Oh and the wireless things from Tivo? You can get them cheap from Amazon or Buy.com.

This is a quote from Tivo customer support: What is the difference between this and what @UncleFrog told me to get in his first post? And I'm still confused. No one knows how to dumb it down.

"You can connect your Series2 DT TiVo box to the Ethernet cable on the modem to try and get a connection. However, most modems would need to connect a router first before it would allow the TiVo box to download. I would personally recommend getting a router (wireless is ideal if you go wireless in the future) and an Ethernet cable. This would allow your TiVo box to connect without the phone line. The link below will walk you through more setup options."
