Furniture Hunt: Can you help me find an affordable low table/stand/bookshelf thing?
I'm looking for a low table thing that will go in my office (supposed to be a dining room) that I can use to stash stuff including my genealogy binders you see in that picture. Those things are hideously ugly so I'm more interested in closed doors than open shelves. I've been looking at LCD TV Stands/Bases as they seem to be the right width & height. I just haven't found anything that I like well enough to spend the money on yet.
Picture of the area is below. It's a bay window. I'm fine going a bit higher or lower than the 22" (measurement below the sill). You can see the edge of my huge teacher-style desk in the left corner. I'm looking for something in a walnut or cherry most likely -- something in the darker shades or a bit reddish.

Yes that's a woot box. Still haven't opened that dang thing. Probably been a year now. Sigh.
Now, will my questions asked rating go up?
Do you have an Ikea near you? They have several low tables that they intend to be TV stands like this:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80141770
You probably could remove the middle shelves in that one... Some of the sets have the option of adding doors.
Have you tried Staples, Officemax, or Office Depot? They might have something along the line you're looking for.
I'd personnally stay away from Ikea. I've never seen anything there I liked how it was put together or looked.
Take a look at this: http://www.hayneedle.com/furniture/family-room/tv-stands_parkviewfullsizedtvconsole.cfm probably not what you want, but this hit the height requirement for us. Needed it low so once we put the flat screen on it, it would still all fit underneath the kudu mount.
It is extremely well made and I managed to get it delivered for just under $500. The drawers are not overly deep and the shelves behind the glass doors are adjustable/removable.
Actually, take a look at all the Kathy Ireland bookshelves, office furniture, etc., at Hayneedle and then fire up the google to look for coupons for them. I ended up with free delivery and 20% off.
what about something like this?

Another possibilty would be Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge if either are near you. They don't show everything online that they carry so you'd have to go brick and mortar to see what they had. :(
Or something really unique...

What about a toy box?
This is from Hayneedle, although not exactly what you are looking for.

@lavikinga: That's a nice one but more that I can pay right now. I'm also leaning towards no glass since I'm a pig behind closed doors (in furniture too!). whoa, pretty wide too.
@mtm2: A top-opening chest won't cut it. I do want to be able to easily access the stuff in it. And as for the tool chest, this is the first room people see walking in my front door. I would like to keep a tiny bit of class. Granted I don't have much class but.... Hadn't thought of Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge though. Hmmmmm.
@durkzilla: @mtm2: I've owned furniture from Ikea and from Staples/Office Max/Office Depot (while not a brand, the quality found is similar for most of the furniture they sell).
I prefer the Ikea stuff. The build quality is similar, but Ikea tends to cost less.
Also have a look around www.ikeahackers.net for ideas if you've got a little DYI in you. Maybe something like this: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/01/clean-minimalist-tv-stand.html
@thunderthighs: Yeah, the price is higher than it was last summer, BUT it is solid wood with the exception of the back panel which is that manufactured wood stuff.
Something to consider if you find the right piece but it has glass doors, you can very easily add a covering on the inside of the door. Fabric, pretty paper, photographs, anything.
Oh dear, I just located a Garden Ridge in my town. Of course, it's in a part of town I'm "not allowed" to go to without permission and firepower ;)
Great, I ask a question and all my dials bomb out to zero. I can't win.
Edit: Yay! My numbers are back!
Edit2: Huh, when I was at zero, it said the numbers were updated 8 minutes ago. Now that they're back to not being zero, it says it was updated 20 hours ago. Did I just time travel?

$72.49 Wood Composite, Espresso Finish, Adjustable shelves
Dimensions: Length: 44.1" Height: 20.9" Width: 19.1"
@skippykj: That has possibilities. I think I like it's sister version better though:

That might get me through until I can afford something better.
@thunderthighs: I was going to post that one but it's 54.9" long
@skippykj: Well CRAP!
@thunderthighs: What about getting someone to make one for you. Do you know any carpenters or handymen?
@oheifearnain: Yeah, I pondered that but I'm afraid that would be more $$ than I can spend too. Sigh.
Hmmmm, I should check out some furniture consignment places.
@thunderthighs: I would visit the local collectible and antique furniture places, myself. There are plenty of them in Dallas; my daughter and I both love to go antiqueing, and I've seen appropriate cabinets in all sorts of places for very reasonable money.
...and this question has yet to roll to popular. I've read that deals has worked out the kinks. I'm thinking there are still pixies poking about.
@lavikinga: Believe me, after last night's fiascoes, I'm taking it all personal. =\
@thunderthighs: kinda makes wish for lightning arms to go with the thunderthighs, doesn't it?
@thunderthighs: what happened last night? I miss something?
@thunderthighs: Sorry Thunder - never meant to comment on your class.
@mtm2: LOL I have very little class.
Went to a couple consignment stores and furniture stores today. Found a couple possibilities but they were more than I wanted to pay. I guess I'll keep looking or keep doing without.
Thank you everyone for your help!
FYI, after hitting furniture stores this last weekend with no luck, I did some more online searching.
Figured out that storage benches were the way to go. Decided on this one. Not great but it'll do for a few years anyway.

And finally! The finished cabinet:

@thunderthighs: Looks great and more like a permanent solution.
