When you turn them upside down. 66>1
In Roman numerals, XCIX is "greater" than C. More letters, I mean.
99 dollars is greater than 100 pennies (okay, that's a stretch)

those fancy new microwaves... Don't you youngins know they used to have a dial, none of this digital readout stuff they use now a days....

actually I use that little trick a lot when I need to heat up food... putting in 90 seconds is one less button push than putting in 1:30 minutes.

@theant: If you push 99, you won't even have to move your finger over to the zero!

If you have 100 pennies vs. 99 dimes?

In the case of the microwave the "100" you refer too is likely supposed to be 1:00 minute, which is why you'd get a 60 second timer vs typing in 99 seconds... eh?

@daviscmd: is correct. A 3 or 4 digit time input is assumed to be in minutes and seconds, where a 1 or 2 digit number is assumed to be seconds.

Also, 99 is greater than 100 when they're both negative.

But do all microwaves do that? Does 100 always mean 1 minute? ...I'll find out on my archaic model tonight...

@luvche21: Everyone I've ever used (since the late 70's Litton I grew up with) has done that.

This is why I am turning into a cranky old man... and I'm 35

@tsfisch: The microwave we had in the 70's had a dial like an egg timer. And no cutoff switch if you opened the door while it was in use.

No big deal. We figured the Russians would nuke us before the microwave.

When is 99 greater than 100? When you are counting out alimony/child support checks ;)
