Where are you - what general vicinity?

Most any State or National Park is a great place to camp.

Check out the state park system near you. In my state, there are some extremely affordable campsites available. Since we already have the tent & basic supplies, we can camp for days for the price of one night at a mediocre motel.

If you want a non-electric site, you can even stay for under $20 a night around here.

You really can't go wrong with the state and national parks systems. Commerciial campgrounds like KOA and Yogi Bears Jellystone sites cost a lot for basically an overpriced motel, without the amenities like heat.

I have to make a second recommend for Bryce canyon, as well as Zions National park. They're both located in Southern Utah, and in my opinion kick the crap out of the Grand canyon, which is little more than a giant hole in the ground.

Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge in Western Oklahoma

The campground facilities are plentiful and stay very clean. Though the campgrounds and visitor center stay busy you don't ran into a lot of people on the numerous hiking trails or around the lakes. Its great to watch the buffalo, elk and Langhorns roam, the groundhogs popping in and out of there holes and the hiking trails are varied in terms of difficulty.
There isnt much nearby though.

@klozitshoper: I am in Florida but anywhere in the surrounding States would be good too.

I go to Land between the Lakes in Kentucky. There are many great spots that are clean and provide lots to do with family.

I like to camp at Tinemaha Creek in the Owens Valley of California. They are still stocking the Owens River by Big Pine nearby. I fish off of Bartlett Road there. Fishing regs are 5 trout in possession 11-11 to 3-12. Natural hot springs nearby, Keough Hot Springs, but on that road there are little natural hot spring pools the local use that are easy to locate. locals like to get nekkid when they use it. About 20 minutes or so away from Bishop. Skiing up at Mammoth, that's about an hour and 15 away. Taboose Creek is down the road maybe 10 minutes, trout.

Tinemaha is a primitive campground, no hook ups. Costs a few bucks a day to camp. It does have restrooms but no shower. It does have water you can fill up your water carriers with.

(for the Owens River 134)
It is the high desert, it gets cold. Roads are easy to navigate. Friendly locals.

"A favorite place to go camping that doesn't cost a lot of money"

Um.... The woods?

Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I've never done much car-camping, so I'm afraid I can't be much help, other than agreeing with the suggestion of State and National parks.

@anotherhiggins: I actually came to suggest the woods myself, only seriously.
You don't have to go to an official camp ground to camp.

I am not a camper, but my husband and I traveled a lot around the country and visited many state and national parks.

If you are in Florida - and I am too - check out MyakkaRiver.org (a marvelous park) and for others, Floridastateparks.org/oscarscherer/ and from there, you will also find a listing of many. Good luck on finding a great place to go. You did not say time of year, but, as I am sure you know from living in this state, there are some pretty buggy, rainy, hot periods, so choose carefully. Have a wonderful time wherever you do go.

@rabid7: That was a serious reply. I said "sorry" because I can tell by context that the OP is asking about car camping places.

But seriously - paying to sleep in the woods? That seems foreign to me.

Actually, when I think about the money I've spent on gear I guess it's hardly free. Hmmm....

Kirk Creek in Big Sur is the hands down best camping deal I know of. $22 a night to camp on bluffs directly above the Pacific Ocean! It is simply unreal to camp there!
