questionsmen.. do you leave the toilet seat up?

Up. But then again I live by myself.

Still I think as a matter of personal safety women should always check if the seat is up or down, no matter how well-trained your man is :)

vote-for7vote-against

I have the nifty slow-close toilet seats too. So down it goes, even though it's just me nowadays ... again :(

vote-for15vote-against

There was just an episode of South Park about this. Hilarious!

http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s16e01-reverse-cowgirl

Mine goes down. The cat has a tendency to drink from it so I keep it closed.

vote-for21vote-against

I've never understood the "don't leave it up" gripes. Just because women don't want/need it up doesn't make down the "default" position. I have two sons, which means males outnumber females in the home 3 to 1. Since we use it "up" far more than "down", it makes sense to just leave it in the last used position.

Why is it so hard for ladies to just put it down before using it, when they expect us to always put it up, then back down, when we do?

vote-for8vote-against

This question reminds me of a specific flow-chart I saw the other day. It made me laugh:

vote-for16vote-against

If you fall in because YOU didn't look, How is that MY FAULT?

Leaving the seat up means I didn't PEE on it!

vote-for14vote-against

because we have cats who will drink out of ANYTHING, the default position in our home is always seat and lid down. my office, mostly full of men, runs the same way though. The idea is that everyone leaves it the exact same way - everything closed. Then noone ever has any surprise or annoyance. Just gotta open what ya gotta open, depending on whether you dangle or not.

vote-for31vote-against

I took the easiest compromise at home. My wife and I leave the lid down. It's fair, because we both have to remember. It looks more attractive, too. No reason for guests to have to look at toilet water when they come in for something else.

vote-for10vote-against

Down, but just because it looks nicer I think. There is something about leaving the lid open after dropping kids off at the pool that makes me feel a bit ill.

vote-for25vote-against

@tsfisch: 1) Because it's more sanitary to flush the toilet with the lid down - cuts down on aerosolized toilet water coating bathroom surfaces.

2) Your hands are already dirty, go ahead and lower the seat & lid. Otherwise she's compelled to grab and lower the seat with clean hands before she even uses it.

In response to the OP's question, my spouse lowers the lid. I am very appreciative of both him and also to his dad & mom for raising him to do so.

vote-for10vote-against

I'm in a habit of putting it down (seat and the lid) just because I have a seat cover and prefer the way it looks. Also, I got an automatic toilet bowl cleaner from woot, and I think it says to keep the seat down too.

vote-for11vote-against

@afurball: This is the only legitimate answer for all cases. Makes the more industrial ones with no lid seem even worse.

We have pets, so that's another reason in our house.

If I'm at a place with no lid and its a mens room I leave it up. Odds are the next guy needs it up and there's no way I'm touching it if I don't have to. Kick flush anyone? I wash my hands and all, but there are some nasty people out there, I touch as little as possible.

vote-for18vote-against

Reasons to close the toilet:
1. I have never dropped anything in a closed toilet.
2. No toilet-breath dog kisses.
3. The toilet bowl ranks highly among things I'd rather weren't on constant display in my home. This is especially true given that my toilet requires a few seconds on the handle to flush and my guy friends can't seem to understand this so 90% of the time they leave the toilet unflushed with the lid standing open. Charming.

vote-for5vote-against

If I have to pick the seat up to go then you can put the seat back down when you go. I get into this with my wife every other month. Now if she would close the top lid when she was done then I would have no issues with putting the lid down.

vote-for7vote-against

I have always lived alone, and I have always kept it down. I'd rather not have toilet water (and what's contained within) misting over my bathroom, so I always close then flush.

vote-for4vote-against

@tsfisch: I, on the other hand, was outnumbered 3 to 1 for a while in my home. So it stayed down after use.

vote-for7vote-against

I always put the lid back down and always raise it up to begin with. It's jsut a habit that can't be broken at this point. I know my gf really appreciates it. I'll usually also make sure nothing splashed up when flushing to ensure there's no surprises for her either if it's not both lids down.

vote-for10vote-against

When you close the toilet,
Pro: Looks nicer
Pro: Pets can't drink the toilet water
Pro: Flushing doesn't mist particles up into the air
Pro: Can't accidentally drop anything in
Con: Women must lift one seat, men must lift two (or sometimes only one)

Just close it. For everyone's sake.

vote-for8vote-against

With pets in the house, the lid (and seat) stays down all the time. I figure this also covers the issues with toilet water spray and accidentally dropping things into the toilet.

About the only time the lid is up is after my gf uses the toilet and she has gotten better, though she still forgets. (She also has pets at home, but is able to pretend that they never drink from the toilet.)

vote-for5vote-against

I agree that in this day and age "if I can pick it up, you can put it down." But I also don't like the way it looks when it's up, so I generally put the whole thing down.

vote-for4vote-against

Toilet seat down, but not the lid.

My wife has never complained...at least about that.

We have four sons, and their bathroom, however, usually was up.

vote-for4vote-against

I'm just gonna say after being a young girl who slipped into the toilet in the middle of the night on multiple occasions I 1. prefer the seat down from those scarring experiences 2. always check if it is down so it doesn't happen again

vote-for4vote-against

@afurball: "2) your hands are already dirty..."

So, its OK I have to raise it with clean hands but "she" can't but it down with clean hands? I see a hole in your argument there.

In any case, I always put it down regardless. Never even really think about it.

I do agree though, if you fall in, it is NOT my fault. I have to look to make sure its lifted, you can make sure before you sit down. I've never accidentally sat on a seat that was in the upright and locked position when I sat down.

vote-for6vote-against

I love the fact that my boyfriend's mom taught him to put the toilet seat down after he's done doing his business. It's the small things in life, ya know?

vote-for5vote-against

I leave it down. I have good aim

vote-for2vote-against

Yes and so does my wife. Why? So the dog can get water without dripping all over the seat. Yes, my dog drinks from the toilet, it's clean water and a clean toilet and way less hassle than keeping a water bowl full.

vote-for4vote-against

@fenriq: Yeah I agree, plus my dog is very big and he just lifts the lid with his head anyway so putting the lid down has no bearing.

vote-for8vote-against

It varies. Sometimes the girlfriend actually prefers that I leave it up- if I've been drinking sometimes I forget to pick it up if it's down.

I just do what I'm told honestly, doesn't seem worth arguing about to me.

vote-for1vote-against

Men should put the seat down because in the middle of the night if I have to pee and I don't look at the position of the seat I might fall in!

Reverse logic:

It should always be left UP, because in the middle of the night if I have to pee and I don't look to see the position of the seat I might pee on the lid and it just goes everywhere!

:D

vote-for9vote-against

In this day and age of $100-$500 pocket devices, any chance to contain water is smart. Lid is down unless the commode is being used/cleaned. It's more sanitary, less un-attractive, and safer for valuables.

vote-for5vote-against

My husband leaves the seat and lid down due to my nagging. It started because we have cats and I don't want them drinking toilet water, mainly because I use pretty harsh chemicals to clean the toilet. I also think the room just looks a little more clean and put together if the lid is shut and I don't want dirty toilet water particulates flying around the room when we flush (a little OCD maybe?).

vote-for4vote-against

@zapp brannigan: I know that one, luckily my dog hasn't learned it though she's definitely big enough to do lift the lid on her own.

Somewhat related, when I was looking at places to live once, a guy I knew said he had a room and was showing me around. When he came to the bathroom he said that everyone, men and women, had to sit to pee. I thanked him for his time and did not move in. There's a lot I'll put up with but I don't need someone else telling me how to use the bathroom.

vote-for3vote-against

@fenriq: How would he know? I agree with your decision to avoid the place on GP, but that strikes me as a pretty unenforceable rule.

vote-for4vote-against

Down is better. See above for reasons.

vote-for2vote-against

Take the seat and lid off. Now everyone has to squat.

vote-for4vote-against

@anorion: I used Asian style toilets like this one in China. No thanks! It was especially fun on the ferry, bouncing along on the swells.

vote-for3vote-against

always put the seat and lid down, with 4 rambunctious kids in the house if I don't things always find a way to get knocked in if we don't...if no kids I would probably leave it based on how I used it

vote-for5vote-against

i caught my cats drinking from the toilet almost everyday when i first got them (they were already adults). now i open the lid when i need to use it and close completely when i'm done, in my bathroom and the guest bathroom. plus the guest bathroom toilet usually has tools on the lid from my home improvement projects in that bathroom

vote-for3vote-against

I'm a man, but I usually pee sitting down, since I tend to spray. I usually close the lid before flushing since it looks nicer. My fiancee doesn't ever use my bathroom, and I don't generally use hers. Still....

Many women have a strange obsession with the state of the toilet seat, and a mistaken sense that they're entitled to not have to check the seat before they plop down. Anyone that doesn't check out the surface they're about to put their butt on has made a decision that's incomprehensible to me.

vote-for4vote-against

@khellendros1984: I've never failed to check before sitting. My objections have more to do with the fact that it is a disgusting object best closed when not in use than any fear of falling in.

vote-for5vote-against

My father gave me some good advice when I first got married. "Son, remember to put the toilet seat down when you finish in the bathroom, your new wife will appreciate it." Well, I took that to heart and closed the cover over the toilet late one night after finishing my duty. Much to my surprise and dismay, about 3 o'clock the same morning, I was awakened to my wife yelling "WHO PUT THE ** SEAT COVER DOWN?"

Always look before you leak...

vote-for1vote-against

I think the whole fighting over the toilet seat thing is extremely petty and selfish. Really? You had to put the seat down? OMG! I hope you didn't put your back out or strain a muscle!

Is it really that important? Really?

vote-for3vote-against

@moondrake: I saw a couple mentions above about falling in, and it's one of the standard gripes about the situation (and also the main one I was chewed out on as a child). Between the aesthetics, the possibility of spray (apropos video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtTEGOxnq8M), my former roommate's cats (ewwww, why are his paws wet!), etc, I happen to agree that the seat (and more importantly, lid) ought to be left down. My post was more a cry of "Oh no, not this discussion again" than anything else.

vote-for4vote-against

wow, this has a ton of responses.
I was trained growing up to always put the seat down...never really thought about it. Even in my apartment at school (just 1 other male) we always put the seat down when done...I think it looks nicer to be honest -- that's probably why I do it...I'm sure my lady prefers it that way too, and let's be honest, it's one less thing for her to gripe at me about! :)

vote-for3vote-against

No. I don't want to stare at the interior of a toilet bowl in general, so I just put the lid down when not in use.

vote-for4vote-against

@khellendros1984: oh, agree whole-heartedly that the seat AND lid should be put down when finished. I know many females that leave the lid up...that annoys me.

vote-for1vote-against

not till i had kids did i start putting the seat down. if you expect me to put it down when i'm done, why can't i expect you to look before you sit?

(not trying to be a chauvinist, just being honest)

vote-for2vote-against

@oompaloompa18 sez: "I always put the lid back down ... I know my gf really appreciates it."

This.

It's so interesting that men will worry about attracting and pleasing a woman, yet proudly proclaim "she didn't look, she fell in, too bad, so sad", rather than put the seat back down for her safety and comfort.
