I this, I was always disappointed in the old school games. For my money, in terms if story, fun and space-y-ness (but not replay value), I have to go with Dead Space. And the main character is an engineer, so that's a bonus :)

@msklzannie: Nice answer...I forgot about those, as well as many that I am probably unaware of. @okham: You get first shot at the user who mentions the E.T. Atari game. :)

@msklzannie: beat me to it, I was going to say space quest 2! How about Xenophobe? I pumped a lot of quarters into that one.

I played the following for days on end on my Atari 7800:
Galaga, Asteroids, and Activision Space Shuttle

I'm pretty sure Elite is the correct answer.

Magic School Bus. It was for Sega I think. Used to play it with my dad a lot.

Asteroids. I'd be babysitting, spinning the little space ship and shooting like a maniac. Not as effective as some strategies, but fun.

PC game series : Wing Commander series (by Origin). (Wing Commander III : Heart of the Tiger was amazing).
Arcade game : Star Wars Arcade (by Atari)
Home game console series : Colony Wars (by Psygnosis).

For stealing quarters, Galaga. At home on the pc, Commander Keen.

Dead Space. Survival horror space action.
Game is intense. Even more so with headphones. Try playing that a 3am and not get scared.

Also really enjoyed Halo 4. Such a great campaign. Haven't tried MP yet, but plan to soon.

@eepeep: Second the Wing Commander series, particularly 3 and 4. These were far ahead of their time, with a real story line that drove the gameplay (rather than vice versa). It also featured gameplay that altered the plot and outcome: you had to make the right decisions and fight well to get the "good" ending. Check this clip from Wing Commander 4.

Mass Effect. The first one. We won't talk about the third one.

Modern: Mass Effect 2
Classic: The original Lunar Lander game, for WIn 95. Only played it as a kid, probably only managed to land it a handful of times, loved it. The new one is in my Steam library but haven't spent any time with it yet.

That new Artemis game, where 6 players run a starship on different screens looks like it could be a geektastic blast.

I mainly only played space related games on the Atari, so I'm going to have to go with Yars Revenge and Missle Command.

phantasy star online. not just favorite space game, favorite period.

I'll add to the chorus of Wing Commander. Man, what a game.

Also (and I'll get a lot of guff for this) Mass Effect 3 really is a fantastic game. Just beautiful. Disregard all the vitriol about the ending (though there are legitimate issues to be sure). It is just amazing. Great music, great mechanics, great story, great looking. Great. :)

Unless Star Wars is for some reason disqualified, I'll add:

Classic: X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter

Modern(-ish): Star Wars: Battlefront II

edit: I just saw how old this thread is. Ha!
