Do you "like" companies on facebook to get free stuff?
I have noticed more and more companies giving away free stuff if you like their facebook page. Do you do this (allow yourself to become an advertisement) to get free coupons or free stuff?
I don't. Not that I care to have a Facebook account in the first place anyways. Even if I did, though, I'm not so easily "bought".
No. I let other people "like" them and post the deals on Woot for me to use.
P.S. - some are worth it though. We were at a bar that told us if we liked their page they would give us free shots!
Depends on the deal. I've done it a few times but not all that much. It is one of the few things I log onto Facebook for these days.
No. I do have a facebook account, but only because one was required to for an article I wanted to comment on a long time ago. I have never used it otherwise.
China's internet doesn't let me "like" anything on facebook :(
It's funny, two opposing forces at work here-being pulled apart by the desire to get something for cheaper (or free!) and the need to live a spam free existence! Must get the deal! No! Must not sell out! No! No!!!
I will do it, get the freebie and later unlike the company. I don't mind using them like they use me.
I never like anything or allow any application or page access to any of my information other than what facebook forces me to. For a long time I didn't allow any access to my profile, but its either all or nothing, so when I got a smartphone I had to turn applications back on. But pages work similarly, they get access to all your info and can share it as they please.
So nope, definitely not, there's a reason they want you to like their page to give you the freebie. It's to get aalllll your info for marketing. Your age, where you live, other things you like to help them find out who their product audience is. And best yet, your phone number for everyone who for some crazy reason wants to have your number on facebook (I have a great story about that...)
But not to be cynical, there are some valid points to "who cares?". Meh, I'd just rather not.
I'll only "like" the company if I really LIKE the company. Free stuff is a nice side effect though.
Yes, that is the only reason I have my facebook account.
I've received some pretty cool stuff for free...an Olay product that retails for $30+, Mary Kay mascara (I am now a fan of this!) and a half price room at Reno's Circus Circus (where we go all the time). None of these required an app and I've never received any spam from any Facebook company that I "like". If your profile is locked to the most private setting none of these companies can get your personal information unless you give it to them willingly. I am certain of this because I have a company Facebook page and I don't have access to my "fans" information unless they have a public profile.
Facebook is not the devil, it's just a tool. Google probably has more of your personal info than Facebook.
@meh3884: On the nose. That's exactly why I never do it.
@ohcheri: You're right that you can make a lot of settings private, but there is a whole list of info that any page or app you use can access..it includes most of your basic information. And its not that you're going to get spam, for me its just the principle that they are getting and storing all this info about you. When you like a page to get a freebie, you also have to dole out your info to get the product as well, and if you read into their privacy policy, its going to include a clause they won't sell your info, but its theirs to use and keep.
Again, some people just don't care. But I stick with what I said before...I'd just rather not.
I do. I generally "like" them, wait for my free stuff, and "unlike" them once I get the free product, because they give away the free stuff to drag new people in, not to people who like them all the way through, and who wants ads and stuff in their Facebook feed? Not this guy!
Thanks for reminding me. I need to unlike Best Buy.
Sort of related...did you know Woot tweets all our questions:
@ohcheri: I certainly did NOT know that! Kind of smarmy.
I have a separate account for "liking" things
@chellemonkey: I never thought of that. Good idea! Time to set a new facebook account up.
I "like" them, get the freebies and then "unlike" them. I have gotten lots of free stuff. Most of it is full size products sometimes high dollar produts. Not worried about the info they might get from me. Helps their marketing and gets new products to my area. It's not like all your info isn't out there in the web for anyone to get anytime they want it anyway. This way at least I get something out of it!
