Such artistry and skill! We are surrounded by talent.
My deals.woot friend @hobbit has pointed out that I should learn to appreciate the skill and talent and artistry that it took to not only hide the Reply and Tattle buttons, but make them bold when they are coaxed into appearing by hovering in the appropriate area. Since I myself could not write the code to do this, having no idea what the code would look like, it is obviously a talent, albeit one that I have previously failed to appreciate.
I take this opportunity to point out the skill and tenacity one or more of our woot staffers has demonstrated and to praise them for same. +Atta-person!*

Ow! Quit it! Ow ow ow! Now my ribs hurt. I hope you're happy.
@shrdlu: What!?!??! Are you not appreciative also? Were you drinking coffee? Did it come out your nose? Just curious...
(edit) It's cold and rainy and I don't have another project to start on.
Not going to lie, I didn't mind seeing the buttons there all the time...didn't seem as if they caused any sort of clutter or anything so it really becomes just a method for keeping new deals.wooters from knowing where such buttons are at? just my 2 cents...
@sand4me: Far too late in the day for coffee. No, nothing came out my nose. Nice try.
Lovely write up.
@twerp02: Maybe we could get you to whip up a magic brew. How is the job search going?
@sand4me: would love to whip up a brew, but unfortunately I don't drink coffee...as for the job search, pretty uneventful but there's still hope and beer to drink before graduation
This is what happens when there are no spammers to attack.
Stone the developers. 420 for everyone.
@jabathewoot: Hey, you better watch your phraseology.
THWACK
We'll have none of that 420 nonsense around here, young Jaba.
@theflounder: Arrgh. If only I knew what 420 meant. I will go use the magic google button and perhaps enlightenment will come to me.
(edit) Learn something new every day.
@twerp02: Well, I actually meant brew as in beer, or a really strong ale. Yummy.
@sand4me: Ah, saw the coffee mentioning earlier in the posting and went with that.
Actually started a Black Lager 2 weeks ago, and bottled my European Bock (fairly strong at 6.25%) around the same time - the Bock turned out pretty well.
If you were anywhere close to me I'd invite you over to have a couple!
@twerp02: Sounds wonderful, but hundreds of miles distant - will go pour a glass of wine instead.
If you can't dazzle them with diamonds, baffle them with bulls*?
@sand4me: I.Can't.Breath. It wasn't actually my suggestion it was @emhodew who pointed out that I should be complimenting @shawnmiller for his skill at hiding the buttons from the newbies instead of complaining about it.
Don't tell my boss because I told him it would take me an entire day to code up the hover links, and it turned out to be only two lines of CSS and like five minutes of work. So I spent the rest of the day playing Rock Band.
.forumList .postAction ul { display:none; }
.forumList:hover .postAction ul { display:block; }
@shawnmiller: Boooo!!!!! Where's my down voting button?
On the other hand, I wish I'd bet money on it not being your idea. For those two or three that I mentioned this to, off line:
I TOLD YOU SO.
Yes, that did feel good.
So? Can we have our buttons back now?
@shrdlu: At least @shawnmiller: got one improvement right. The email notifications are great for those of us who have to leave our computers and go to work!

@hobbit: thanks for the mention, but my snappy response pales to @sand4me:'s eloquent prose on the subject!
@hobbit: Well, my bad! So, just to clarify, @emhodew, Colts fan and resident of the greater Chicago area, (Got to know the Wooters), was the originator of the idea that praise might be more beneficial than criticism (of the flickering buttons) and that we should acknowledge talent and skill where the acknowledgement fits (ya know, like a shoe) - and I just happened to receive a comment from @hobbit that I should have read a bit more carefully, so she IS NOT TO BLAME. She who shall remain blameless can now hopefully breathe freely again.
@shawnmiller: Those two lines are responsible? That's all it took? I am gonna check this with another programmer - @shrdlu - is he kidding??
You are all missing the important part- I want the thread title as a shirt!
@sand4me: Yes I saw that post, I was part of that discussion. I found this one because of the email alerts. Hobbit mentioning my name triggered an alert, and when I opened the discussion I almost fell out of my chair. I don't BLAME anyone I think this is GREAT fun! :))
@sand4me: Young Master Shawn speaks the truth. Just a little CSS, and one (count 'em, ONE) person is happy, and the rest of the inhabitants of the Valley of Deals are sent off to the Slough of Despond. At this rate, we shall never reach the World Which is to Come.
@crossedcrowns: My daughter has a far better shirt.
Loser Magnet
It's like wearing body armor or a nun's habit, only funnier.
Speaking of buttons, whatever happened to the Betta Taster Badges? ...and the Staph Infection Badges? How about some Flounder Badges?
Flounders just get no respect.
@theflounder: I respect you @theflounder. Look, you have a purple triangle. This is worthiness in full color. Life is good.
@theflounder: I respect flounders with my mouth shut. Keeps the bits out... should you get slapped.
@shawnmiller: I can hear it now.
Revennnnnnnnnnnggggggeeeeeeeeeee...
Much more fun than a replica of a flip book choose your own adventure.
Actually, it's four lines of code, two for the header and two for the comments. This is how it's done for the comments:
.hcomment .footer ul {display:none;}
.hcomment:hover .footer ul{display:block;}
It's an interesting idea, and looks kinda cool. But it violates the principle of least surprise, and gives no target to move your mouse to unless you're already hovering on the comment.
It didn't really bother me to have them hide, but now that I've thought about it, I'm going to try turning them back on (with Firefox Extension Stylish) and see which way I like better.
If anyone wants the same, install Stylish, right-click on icon and pick "write new style" for deals.woot.com, then just before the } curly brace (1 line up from the end) paste:
.hcomment .footer ul{display:block !important;}
.forumList .postAction ul { display:block !important; }
edit: oh, even more useful on my own posts. I think I do like.
