I have used xbmc on an Apple TV in the past. It was awesome until we had a power outage and the old laptop that I set it up with is now gone so I haven't used it in a while. One of these days ill get some motivation and fix it again. Everyone loves free tv right?

I use Plex regularly. Never much trouble, consistent updates. I stream from my home PC to other PC's and even my phone at work (no WiFi, just off the wireless network) with no problems. Also, it's free.

Hope that helps!

@pstrnutbag44: I thought plex server was payware.

I use XBMC on all my computers. Wonderful interface and it plays everything I can throw at it (including .rar'ed files).

Give it a shot.

@j5: There is a pay service, however I have never paid nor do I know what paying would do. For my usage, it works perfectly fine and I have never even been asked to pay for anything.

@curtisuxor: I do hace XBMC, but I find the library/metadata function to be less than ideal.

@j5: In what way? I mainly use it to watch rar'ed films and tv, but I just recently set up an HTPC for my mother and the auto-scrape feature was functioning fine.

My only qualms with the library are that I had to manually set up folders at the beginning as I didn't bother with the auto-scan. But everything gets downloaded to that central folder and is still accessible through subfolders.

@curtisuxor: I use media center master to grab metadata and fan art for both 7mc snd xbmc, but xbmc ignores the local files and guesses incorrectly on the titles, grabbing odd French or other foreign films, for example. I've purged the library database several times and it still picks wrong. It does fine for TV shows, just movies that it freaks out on. Frankly, I'm tired of messing with it as I don't feel like manually correcting 100+ titles.

@j5: Ah, I can see how that can be an issue. Most of my um... stuff... complies to certain "naming rules" that don't have that problem.

What version do you have? It's been working for my mom so far with Frodo (v12.1).

To each their own though, I'll keep the issues with mcm in mind for my future builds. Thanks.

@j5: XBMC uses http://www.themoviedb.org/ to grab movie titles (unless you changed it to something else). If the name is not exactly correct, it will pull incorrectly. For re-makes sometimes putting the date after the movie works as well.

It does suck to manually update 100+ movies though.

@curtisuxor: I'm on Froyo. I (re)installed it last night, went through a few setups, Aeon skin, couple of libraries, weather, etc. then closed it out. On restart, it reverted back to all my old settings/skins (transparency). Odd..

These computers confound me.
I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong, so I wouldn't stress too much over MCM. I know there are those on the dev team who...dislike...external media managers like MCM or mymovies. My tv shows are "scene" format, but movies go: movies/moviename (yyyy)/moviename.mkv

As an update, I did install and mess with Plex a bit, and have to say it's not for me.
I'll mess with XBMC some more as time permits, see if I can get where I want to be.

Also, nice dig with the "my mom can run it" :)

We mainly watch recorded TV, and 7MC paired with a Ceton InfiniTV or HD HomeRun Prime is the only way to get protected Cable content (you can use XBMC if your cable company doesn't encrypt the channels you watch). 4 tuners and 2x2TB drives and we don't even have time to watch the stuff we do record, never mind re-watch movies.

@ripwave: I rarely rewatch movies, but the kids....oh the kids....
