What is your salad dressing of choice?
After 36 years of being a bigger guy I decided it was time for a change! Last year I really started eating right and watching my weight. I start eating a bunch of salad which I HATED before! Never knew how people could eat "rabbit food". So after a month of the salad's, not only did I get adjusted to them, I started to want them! Amazing right, who knew?!
I have tried a bunch of different salad dressing over the past year (always on the side) but I keep going back to 1000 Island dressing. It has to be one of the most childish and bad for you dressings, but I LOVE IT! Hey at least it's not blue cheese!
If I get a fancier salad with fruit in it then I will take what they suggest. Usually some raspberry vinaigrette type deal with goes very well with the specialty salad. But if it is a standard tossed, I am always going with 1000 Island.
What is your salad dressing of choice?
I generally use oil and vinegar. If available, I use balsamic, and if available I'll use a flavored one. At home, I have a blueberry balsamic, and use that with some EVOO. Just enough to coat the salad, not drown it.
Wishbone French is my favorite for a few reasons. It tastes great! Compared to Kraft, it has better ingredients, less sodium, and surprisingly fewer carbs. I think for a store bought dressing it's a pretty good balance. I try to watch my carbs and sodium and when it comes to finding a dressing low in both that tastes good this is it.
Bacon bits.
I'm a big 1000 island fan too, and I enjoy ranch, caesar and french. Usually if I'm out I order 1000 island since it seems to taste close to the same no matter where I go.
Italian is what I go with. I like the lighter ones more than the heavier ones anyway, so it works out.
Dorothy Lynch. Lots and lots of Dorothy Lynch. Then throw some fried chicken strips on there and lots of cheese....some bacon...mmm...salads!
I like mixing 2/3rds 1000 Islands with 1/3rd balsamic vinegar. Makes it both tastier and healthier (because you are substituting some dressing with vinegar). I like poppyseed mixed 2/3rds dressing, 1/3rd balsamic vinegar. I like Catalina the same way, plus add a dash of soy sauce. I like Blue Cheese mixed half and half with white wine vinegar (red works but makes the dressing pink). I like sesame seed dressing mixed 2/3rds with 1/3rd rice vinegar. As you might guess, my pantry is half filled with every kind of vinegar you can name. I have a big collection of Pastamore' vinegars, the best of which is probably the white balsamic vinegar infused with pear. Those vinegars are good on salad with nothing else needed.

I've been on a Honey Mustard kick lately, although Ranch has traditionally been my thing. I would like to find a good recipe for a healthy dressing to make at home (less carbs, less sugar, less sodium). The nutrition information on store bought dressing is appalling for most. You folks have given me some good ideas.
Usually vinaigrette or buttermilk feta. I love blue cheese dressing, too, but that is a lot more calories than I need for everyday. I loved just sprinkling some vinegar on my salads but my dentist informed me that too much vinegar is bad for sensitive teeth so I have tried to stop doing that.
@cf: Yeah, I use vinegar and citric acid (sour salt) on way too many foods, which is terrible for my teeth.
I'm not normally a fan of italian dressing, but I LOVE Kraft Roasted Red Pepper Italian dressing. It's tangy and full of flavor and...garlic.
It got me off of creamy dressing for good. I don't even want variety it's so good.
I used to always choose honey mustard until I realized carbs were the main reason I was fat (along with too many calories in general). So, now I stick with ranch. I eat salads most days for lunch.
Out of the standard varieties, I am a ranch guy. Has to be from the refrigerated section though (litehouse or bolthouse farms), not the shelf stable kind (Ken's and Newman's are the best, but still don't compare).
Ott's Famous dressing. SOOO good. Hate that I can't get it down here in my region. Stock up on it when I go up north.
Usually ranch, but my new favorite is Ken's Asian Sesame with Ginger. It really perks up an otherwise bland salad.
1000 Island on salads and burgers. Ken's Steakhouse brand is excellent, and often goes on sale for 99 cents. Occasionally I splurge on Litehouse or Marzetti's from the cooler in produce section.
Hidden Valley Southwest Chipotle. Amazing.
Usually Ceasar or Italian. But if I'm at Moe's? Chipotle Ranch all the way.
Balsamic Vinaigrette, or the yogurt ranch and other flavors they are coming out with now. Made with greek yogurt they have much less fat and a bit of protein even.
A properly made Caesar salad, not that stuff out of a bottle or ladled out of a tub behind a sneeze guard.
But yeah, I like Thousand Island, too. It goes well on Big Macs. :)
I'm in the seizure [sic] salad camp as well.

Proper Caesar.

With anchovies.
When I decided to start eating cleaner I cut out salad dressing completely. Yep, "dry" salad. I got used to it surprisingly fast.
If I use dressing now it has to be awesome stuff. Pepper Parmesan is my favorite, but I don't know the brand.
Another option I did for a while was to just a bit of "juice" from the jar of green olives I used. It took very little to add flavor.
Fat free Catalina.
Wishbone's Red Wine Vinaigrette! It's wicked awesome!! ;->
What is wrong with you people?!?!
Blue cheese and/or Gorgonzola, baby!!!
@sporadic: Thank you for a different answer. I too eat my salads "dry". I need to eat more of them though. :(
I usually skip the dressing, although sometimes I'll take olive oil and add a little lemon or orange to it.
Currently it is Olive Garden's Italian. They started selling it Sam's Club and now I'm hooked!
Before that, it was raspberry vinaigrette, with fruits in the salad (fresh pineapple, dried cranberries, walnuts, apple chunks, feta cheese) -- now I'm hungry!
Once upon a time I want through a 1000 island kick too. It's actually good on pork chops.
@bnbsouthworth: They sell it at Sam's Club?!?! I'm gonna have to look for it, thanks for the tip!!
I like Light Catalina with a touch of the Spicy Catalina (or whatever it's called) to add a little kick.
But my favorite is a freshly made ginger dressing. Too bad I'm lazy.
I personally do not like salad dressing. sometimes i will squeeze an orange over my salad but that's about it.
Salsa. Yep. I use salsa as salad dressing. Very yummy, low calorie, and all around healthier !
Especially good if you have some avocado in your salad. They aren't low cal. But they are the "healthy" good for you type fat.
I love just about any vinaigrette, especially Balsamic and Raspberry.
I like Peppercorn Ranch.
This is the best way to make a salad:
Pagan beeyotch!
Blue effen Cheese!
Everything else is just a palate cleanser, to remind you how much you missed the Blue Cheese!
Got french fries? Blue Cheese dip!
Got burgers? Swiss cheese slices, and Blue Cheese on the buns!
Making pigs-in-blankets? Sneak a tid of blue Cheese in there!
Sheesh youse guys!
