If Chuck Palahniuk/Fight Club is to be believed going to support groups pretending to be sick and crying helps.

It's not really a remedy, though sometimes it works.

I try to get stuff done. Reading, cleaning in the kitchen, sometimes cooking, or laundry. At least deals.woot or something like Plants vs Zombies. If I'm going to be up anyway, might as well make it worthwhile.

(I don't really suffer from insomnia except very very rarely... I just get into doing something and simply don't go to bed. Like now... I have to be up in 2-1/2 hours to get my daughter up and take her to school for a practice SAT. Why am I still up? No good reason. If I went to bed, I'd likely be asleep within five minutes as I am dead tired.)

Not going to get any good answers from those of us up at this time. :)

That said, I usually get out of bed after an hour or so. Otherwise, it just gets worse. Reading for a bit usually helps.

@okham: Haha true, I did pick a bad time to ask this question.

Benadryl. One tablet about an hour before I want to be asleep. Test it on a weekend, though, to be sure it won't leave you groggy in the morning.

As magic cave mentioned, Benadryl's good.

One thing I do--which is admittedly kind of odd, but works for me--is listen to audiobooks on my sansa clip. NOT audiobooks I'm listening to for the first time, indeed I tend to listen to the same few again & again, and they can't be ones that have major crises in them that would get you upset. (Think, say, REBECCA.) I set the timer on about 45 minutes when I'm ready to sleep. Most nights the audiobooks put me out before the sleep timer turns it off. When I wake up during the night, I reset the sleep timer again. It's a nice way to fall asleep, paying attention to the audiobook instead of thinking about trying to fall asleep!

You know what always put me to sleep watching/listening to Bob Ross painting. It's like taking 12 ambien at once. I loved that show!

I don't have a problem going to sleep, but I tend to just wake up in the wee hours of the AM. As of late I've been getting out of bed for a few minutes, walking around the house, drinking a big glass of water, then going back to bed. It's not 100%, but seems to help more often than not.

if you are married, your wife just may have to take one for the team that night , that should make you tired enough to fall asleep

I find taking a couple Ibuprofin (or your pain reliever of choice) helps.

I'm handicapped, so I don't get out to the theater often. I watch movies on my BIG tv. If I fall asleep to a movie more than once or twice trying to watch it, I'll usually try to pick up a used copy. I've essentially accidentally conditioned myself to sleep to it, so I try to make good use of the serendipity of it all.
I also have a wide array of scripted sedative/hypnotic pharmaceuticals.
So the "triple threat" for me is a cup of decaf chai/sleepytime tea, a pill combo, and drifting off while Neo chases the white rabbit with Rob Zombie's Dragula playing in the scene background.

A tall glass of red wine will always do the trick for me.

@dmaz: Makes my feet hot & itchy, then I can't sleep at all!

I don't think I am qualified to answer this question ———>

Watch PBS specials, does the trick every time. If not, any movie with Kevin Costner.

Take more melatonin. I take 6mg every night, and it's safe (or so my doctor tells me) to take up to 10mg.

I suffer from Insomnia often a few tricks that I use.

Sex, when its available it usually works. Though maybe it only works for guys.

Turn on either a documentary on netflix or a movie you've seen a thousand times. For me the key to this working is to lay down and turn away from the screen, otherwise I tend to get interested in the story. Also stay away from your favorite movies.

Nyquil or sleeping pills - I use this as a last resort for fear I'll end up oversleeping once I do fall asleep.

My cousin told me to try two tylenol pm - it was a great night's sleep, but I stayed groggy the entire day after. So, I tried one tylenol pm - still great sleep, but still groggy the next day. So, I tried half of one - that is the perfect dose for me - helps me stay asleep, and doesn't make me drowsy the next day.

I'm not a fan of pills personally. Keep physically active throughout the day including an activity that kicks your ass at least once a day, and hashish. For some this could be as easy as taking the bus or bike to work instead of driving, others find that joining a gym / hiring a personal trainer is a better route (bus takes time, cycling in the city is dangerous). I like to kayak (apparently). And smoking smaller amounts of hash is way nicer on the head and lungs than blowing a bunch of raw cannabis flower.
