I worked for a company for almost 11 years that had a "Christmas" party every year....... but then the "Holidays" ruined it for everyone.

Our work holiday party is at a country club with several other small businesses. We have an hour of apps and free drinks, then a fancy dinner (more drinks), dessert, and dancing. Work covers all of it.

My friend's work does a similar thing (different country club), but they can't invite spouses/partners to theirs.

Our company has a fancy dinner for all of the employees in my location; the company covers all food and drinks for the evening. For the past two years, we've had the events at Ruth's Chris.

I just started working here and was told it wouldn't be "as big as usual" due to budget cuts. I was still amazed at how nice it was. It was at a raquet club with apps, open bar, and served dinner with music and dancing. They paid for eveything for myself and my wife (didn't matter much because my wife still needed a new outfit and shoes...) I work for a large engineering firm just for reference.

We get nothing here. No bonus, no dinner, no party, nothing. Our sister store everyone got a small cash bonus, but we get squat.

I work for local government and my employer doesn't even pay for coffee, we have an office pool to buy coffee. When the coffee maker, refrigerator or microwave breaks down we have to take up a collection to get a new one. If we have a party we pay for everything ourselves. Which, as a government employee I feel is how it should be. We usually have a pot luck or visit a family restaurant for holiday parties. But your holiday parties all sound really nice.

the company i've worked at for the last 4 years does have a Christmas party every year and typically pays for everything (except one tough year where we still had a party at the CEO's house, but everyone brought in food).

they also have a tree of gift cards, all worth $25 each. everyone picks out 2. they could be from anywhere, amazon, home depot, target, applebees, gas card, etc. they even buy a gift (usually a book) for the little kids at the party. they even pay to fly in the 3 people that work out of state.

the last 2 years, it's been at a fancy schmancy country club. it's actually pretty generous considering the company has less than 25 people.

We have a Christmas luncheon at my office. The upper management folks supply the meats, while the rest of us brin gin a dish or dessert. We have about 80 people in my office so it tends to be an all-day event.

@moondrake: I worked for state government so I was in the same boat. However, my last agency formed an employee association that did fund raisers all year and used the proceeds to cover most of the costs of any holiday celebrations. Generally the managers were asked to pay for the big tree in the lobby and possibly some of the meats or other big ticket items. We were also expected to serve. Nothing gets me in the Christmas spirit now like wearing a disposable glove and plopping a big handful of salad with Italian dressing down on a styrofoam plate!

BTW, the fund raisers were as much fun and motivational as the parties! The entire process really contributed to improving morale!

Yes. And it is today. (Thanks for the reminder... I'll dress up a wee bit.)

They provide food (buffet style, some can be fairly good), drink (beer, wine, soda, water) and a DJ (bad wedding style) and a bunch of people hang out for a couple of hours, standing around and talking in a darkened ballroom on campus.

It can be fun, but usually is not much more than a chance to get mediocre food and meh beer or worse wine, and maybe see someone else make a fool of themselves. Hopefully, the person you've been dodging for the last three months doesn't catch up with you, but that is part of the game.

Until this year my work paid for all of the holiday party, including for my spouse. This year though they're no longer having holiday parties.

We had our Christmas Party on Saturday, it is mainly for the employees families. We rent out a catering hall and do a brunch. We get a DJ and he plays a bunch of songs and games with the kids. Santa Clause comes in and we give out presents to all of the kids under 18. There is nothing like watching a sea of kids rip open presents from "Santa". Very cool!

Our Christmas party was paid for by our company. Both you & your guest ( family/friend/significant other ) were covered. They had a fully open bar, DJ and a really nice buffet. They did a few raffles for gift cards ( a fair number for employees and about half as many for guests ). At the end of the night, they also raffled off a new iPad 4.

They also helped us book group space at the nearest decent hotel & they helped get a shuttle to the hotel so you didn't have to drive home after drinking at the open bar.

I work for a non-profit. A generous donor pays for our holiday party. It's not fancy but it's fun. He also buys everyone gift certificates. He is awesome :)

The company I work for throws a party that starts at about 4 in the afternoon and ends early in the evening. It's held in the building and there are a few different areas turned into zones for eating, mingling, etc. There's usually a nice buffet and wine available. No one can bring a guest. I think it's a very nice gesture, and no one has to dress up too fancy or go to another location. No complaints here.

They don't pay for the food or alcohol, but our company is self-insured so they pay for the resulting pregnancy/STI related expenses.

- No free food or drinks
- No spouses
- Small gift exchange (grab bag/white elephant type)
- Generally get the rest of the day off after hanging out there until about 2:30 or so...

Our holiday party pays for you and a guest. From what I understand it's decent food and an open bar (small drinks) but I've been here 2 years and haven't attended yet; a bit too much prom-esque kool aid. Although I regret missing our CEO's speech this year, apparently he had some good dirty Santa jokes.

We have an all staff party the we are to pay for. Typically the deans we work for pay for it though. They usually have door prizes and a silent auction. Today, since this is the last day for many, we as a department brought in cookies and treats for everyone to snack on.

Just got back and I've got to say, probably the best Xmas party I've been to yet. A bunch of people didn't show up so my wife and my friend's husband didn't have to pay and another guy and I got to have two servings of Argentinean prime rib with all the fixings. The food was also excellent which was a bit of a shocker since these group functions tend to be pretty so-so food-wise. OK, I did have to pay for drinks but they were actually great so no complaints here. Here's wishing all of you at least as good a time as I had tonight.

My employer has a huge to do. It was at a very expensive venue, open bar, and they even paid for hotel rooms. It's great and all, but I do wonder (and maybe I'll ask this as a question):

On Christmas Eve day we set up a "customer appreciation" spread that doubles as a day-long employee feed. There are only 9 employees so it's casual. However, each employee gets a nice Christmas bonus check. :)

I work for a small company that traditionally takes every employee in town, along with their significant others, out to dinner somewhere pretty fancy. Because we're small, they normally drop between $1500-$3k, depending on where we go and how many people attend.

This year, however, money is very tight for the company, so rather than us see them "wasting" money on a big party, they've done the right thing and we're having a potluck in the evening at our office, all fancied up for the party. While it would be nice to go out, I'm happy to see them saving the money, helping to ensure that payroll will continue to be a thing.

PS Everyone cross your fingers that we don't end up just another small business that doesn't make it!

I'm not working these days, but my husband, who got tired of retirement, is. His current job is working for a military contractor which won this particular contract last October.. Unlike the contractor which they replaced, this one...well, let's just say now I know how they won the contract.
Everything is cut to the bone. No parties, no lunches or dinners, not even a small fund for throwing a Labor Day Picnic.
While we can't afford to have something catered for all the shifts, and I've been mighty low for several weeks, I've been baking my fanny off since 9 AM today to make sure these folks know SOMEONE appreciates their work. Tomorrow will be another round of baking and then the packing up of everything. And in the middle of it all, I have an appointment with an Apple "Genius" because I broke my laptop...and have to sheepishly admit I never got around to setting up any type of backup. Yeah. I'm stupidly that person. That borked person. Humbug.

We haven't scheduled ours yet. It won't be until after the New Year because one of my coworkers is going out of state for Christmas. We typically have our party at 2 in the afternoon (after the lunch rush but before nearly everyone has to leave to pick up kids/grandkids from school) and preferably on a Thursday. We all bring food and have a gift exchange (gifts worth no more than $5-10). If we combine our party with a store meeting, then our fountain drinks are paid for by the company.
