What are the proper toppings for a hotdog?
I only ask because, well... This is one of the things I like to ask people, and with Baseball season starting soon it just seems timely.
Well that and I need to throw a house warming party, and as a ketchup purist I have no idea what kind of things people like on their hotdogs.
Keep in mind that here in Seattle we have all kinds of designer toppings ranging form the traditional Chicago-style to Japanese dogs.
proper topping can vary from one region to another. the only true rule is no ketchup. ever.
@carl669: Thus the part where I said I was a Ketchup purist.
@xavoc: see...this is why i need to learn to read things instead of just skimming them.
i say stick with the basics: mustard, chopped onions, dill relish and maybe some hot peppers.
@carl669: Yeah not a fan of ketchup either.
I love cole slaw on my hot dogs, especially with chili, or just chili cheese dogs.
Chili, cheese, onions, cole slaw. I've heard it referred to as "Carolina Style"; but I'm in Virginia.
Depending on mood, it's either
a) Chili, cheese, mustard
OR
b) Relish, mustard
or plain. Sometimes a weiner likes to be alone.
skip the topping. i just micro mine for about a minute and a half. yes, my spouse calls it hotdog jerky, insist only toppings should be chili-no beans or cheese. sister says bbq sauce, but would eat bbq sauce on a cake i think. dad says a trash can because hotdogs aren't meant to be ate by humans.
chili and cheese
In addition to the things mentioned, I occasionally like sauerkraut on mine.
Don't forget the saurkraut, it is a must have topping, along with mustard, onions and dill relish.
Chili, cheese, and onions
-- OR --
Ketchup, mustard, sweet pickle relish, and onions
@meems212: Polish or German style? This does actually matter.
At restaurants I get Chicago style. At home I make them with kraut, sliced tomato and a polish spear with brown mustard.
ONLY ketchup and Mustard.
Have you ever tried a Pizza Dog? Freakin' Marines come up with some weird but tasty stuff at their snack shacks.
I do a slice of dill pickle, mayo, and hot sauce. Works super well.
How about some improper hot dogs? Chopped black olives, blue cheese dressing & onions.
I'd suggest having a BUNCH of toppings as mentioned previously. Also, many different types of mustard. Ketchup?? Not on my hot dog!
I like mine Michigan style: (for me faux) meat sauce (not chili, they are two different things!), raw sweet onion and mustard. They're called Dirty John's around here.
BBQ sauce! Not everyone likes ketchup and mustard.
I also like shredded cheedar cheese, but American will do in a pinch.
cheese
I like Mustard, relish, ketchup, and Celery Salt. The Celery salt really makes it for me.
Other Suggestions: cheddar cheese, baked beans, BBQ sauce, real bacon bits, Hot Wienie sauce (ground beef with seasoning).
mustard.
Sour Kraut <----I don't know how to spell it, but it sure is tastey.
Really anything.
I may hail from the Chicago suburbs, but I only put ketchup on my hot dogs. Then again, I'm also a very picky eater from a long line of picky eaters, so my input may be irrelevant.
What's a hot dog made out of again?
...yeah anything already was acceptable. Go wild.
When I was younger, I would put mayo on hotdogs (but, I really put mayo on everything). I don't do that any more. It sounds kind of gross but mayo with baloney doesn't and they are pretty much the same thing (I think). Now, some combination of cheese, chili, mustard and ketchup or just plain.
Tater Tots?
Different days, different moods, different toppings. @figgers3036 has it right. Go wild.
I do believe I caught a TV chef slicing them into hot dog "coins" and pan frying them in butter. I tried it and am here to tell you they were pretty darned tasty!
I'm a big fan of chilli
In this order: mustard, chili, onions, cheese, salsa.
True Michigan coney style: Koegel hot dog, chili, onion, and mustard. Preferably from Lafayette Coney. Suck it American!
@xavoc: Hmmm, good question, I have to admit I've never paid attention to the style. I buy whatever is on sale.
Ketchup and Cheese.
Alternatively, Cincinnati Chili and Shredded Cheese.
@meems212: Having dated a woman of Polish descent, and being of German descent myself, I've been able to experience the difference. However, I'm not sure which one works better on hotdogs...
You can have a whole buffet of things to put on a dog, its all up to you!
Chopped raw onions, grilled onions, onion strips, mustard (spicy, brown, yellow, etc), potato salad, cole slaw, sauerkraut, baked beans, chili, cheese, nacho cheese, hot peppers, grilled peppers, sweet peppers, relish, pickles, french fries, etc, etc
Just make sure that whatever bun you get can hold the toppings!
Smothered/buried in chili (no beans) and cheese would be my fist answer, but it requires a knife and fork to eat...
If I have to eat with my hands, then cheese, mayo, mustard, and sweet pickle relish...
Or a corn dog with ketchup and mustard...
Or sliced, fried, and then scrambled with eggs (yeah, I know, back to the fork)...
If you have a real plate and a fork, go with Wolf brand chili, chopped onion, cheese, yellow mustard, and no ketchup.
If you have a paper plate and no fork, go with brown or yellow mustard, chopped onion, sweet relish, no ketchup, and tabasco if you can handle it.
Did I mention no ketchup?
Honestly, my favorite topping is mustard. Just mustard. Not fancy mustard. Yellow mustard.
Relish, if I'm feeling extravagant.
(I'll eat the hell out of a chili dog, but if I'm making hotdogs, I'm putting mustard on them.)
Do not underestimate celery salt.
I confess to being a Chicago guy that likes ketchup and onions on their hot dog. I'm so ashamed.
Ketchup, mustard, chili, and cheese
Acceptable toppings
Mustard
Baked beans/Chili/grillin beans
Bbq sauce
Nacho cheese doritos
That's all
Mustard and onion sauce or mustard and relish.
I like adding potato chips to my hot dogs, it adds a nice crunch to them. Other than that, just mustered.
I'm with Inspector Harry Callahan on this:
"You know what really makes me sick? Watching you stuff your face with hot dogs with ketchup on them. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hot dog."
Can't agree more.
(It's in Sudden Impact, near the beginning)
