There are many online articles on the price of peanut butter. Prices may increase between 30% and 40% around Nov 1st. May be time to stock up on pb and peanuts. Of course you should consider their shelf life. Caveat: I do not guarantee that anything I said will happen, though I did purchase multiple jars of pb on deals.woot the other day.

My dog is going to be pissed. We'll have to cut back on his kong filling. Wasn't coffee supposed to spike in price too? That would really suck.

Now that I bought up several extra large jars, creating a demand spike and shortages, yes, I'm pretty sure it will. Just before it goes back down and my kids tell me they HATE peanut butter since we had so much....

vote-for6vote-against

The price of PB will go up as soon as people panic and buy up as much PB as they can thus depleting the supply and causing shortages...

Ohhhh nooooo......

...........................not $0.50 more!

A friend of mine tipped me off that Whole Foods was selling an 18-ounce jar of their 365 label PB (contains peanuts and salt, no sweetener) on special at $1.79. I went out & stocked up. As someone who can eat only unsweetened peanut butter, I've often felt at the mercy of stores that charge nutzo amounts for plain PB. This price makes a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread an incredible protein bargain, IYAM.

The problem is w/the peanut crop. I'm paraphrasing...Apparently peanut farmers in Texas & Georgia decided to plant cotton instead of peanuts. Cotton was bringing in a higher price. Drought & disease hurt the peanut crop that was planted, ergo less peanuts = higher wholesale cost to peanut butter manufacturers. Passed on to consumers.

In addition, w/inflation, etc., many families have been buying pb as a cheaper (than meat) source of protein. Definitely the demand has gone up & the raw product (peanuts) has decreased. The price won't go up because people are hoarding it - it will increase dramatically because of the circumstances mentioned above.

If we're lucky the farmers will begin planting it again & the weather will be favorable. Prices will (hopefully) go down to 'normal.'

I was buying a few groceries to last the weekend and for laughs checked the price of peanut butter. Even the store brands were running $3.70 plus.

I don't know what the price was a few months ago but $3.70 seems a lot.

Good thing I loaded up on that Amazon deal!

Now I don't feel so dumb for forgetting I bought it, and buying more, 3 x on BOGO. Which is enough to get us through this continuing crisis. But I think I contributed to the shortage, so sorry. Anyone who needs a sandwich, please contact me, first come, first served, but you must supply your own jelly. Also, your own bread. So, basically, I'll just scoop some peanut butter into an envelope, and mail it, I am sure it'll be fine.

@pickypickypicky: :-D Although I have enough pb for sandwiches, I wonder if you would be so kind as to put 1 cup in a padded envelope and send it to me? I'd like to make some pb cookies & don't want to deplete my sandwich supply. I'll send a 1/2 dozen cookies back to you. 'k?

yes ... i work in food service and got an emile from FSA and SYSCO. all peanut butters will see a 40% increase along with a 3.5% too 5.1% increase All meat and seafood, due to the fuel charge .

@gmwhit: If you are baking PB cookies, I'll send a whole jar. Or, will trade for PB pie, but I think the cookies will mail better.

I hope it dose not but if it dose i will buy anyway, my kids love it.

vote-for2vote-against

If it does, it can't last long. Peanut Butter isn't like milk and eggs. If the price gets too high, people won't buy it. Then the price will come back down :)

FWIW, for those that live in the southeast, Publix has Skippy $1 off this week. $2/16oz any variety. Just bought a couple. That's cheaper than the Amazon link that was floating around Woot.

My 30 pallets of PB in my fallout shelter say yes.

Prepare for the Peanut Butter Apocalypse!

So any way we can profit off this knowledge? Should I be investing in peanut futures?

vote-for3vote-against

@novastarj: I would imagine the hype has already raised the price and limited the profit margin on peanut futures. Word of peanut prices have been around for a month or two now.

vote-for2vote-against

Makes me glad that I don't like peanut butter...

vote-for2vote-against

@olperfesser: And peanut butter lovers thank you!

vote-for2vote-against

@pickypickypicky: @Firebirdude says I can get some on sale at Publix, so I'll just run over there & get a few jars. Probably cheaper than sending it via USPS. Especially since USPS would probably either lose it or break it. Thanks so much for your offer, though! Note to self: need flour, shortening (or lard), and other ingredients. Pick up coffee since it's also going way up in price.

Local Fresh and Easy grocery store had a deal of 2 16oz Skippy jars for $2 going last week. Dunno if that was a good or bad price per ounce but I picked up a couple jars.

Figured it was better quality than the cheap stuff the 99 Cent Store sells.

Woulda stocked up for the rest of you if I knew the PB craze was a'comin...

;)

@atomicorange: Perhaps I should short peanut futures then, assuming the inevitable rise in price will lead to a glut of production to bring things back down.

The only tricky thing is the timing.

Is this going to drive up the price of my precious Snickers bars???

vote-for2vote-against

@wingnutzero: Probably. :-( Look at the good side - at least Payday's not your favorite.

I confess I started the shopping frenzy by posting a peanut butter deal on Amazon...with a link to an article about how the price will be increasing. Then shortly after the price increased, then decreased again. Maybe the government really has a surplus of peanut butter and needs to get rid of it so they put out info saying the price is going up.adjusts tin foil hat

Everything that I have seen from my ingredient suppliers tells me that a price hike is imminent.
