If Romney wins, most likely, the price of OEM cartridges will go up, and non-branded carts will be illegal. But some coyotes will sneak them over the border.

I'll not be participating (just monitoring to keep things civil, of course), but I have to upvote this angle on politics for creativity alone. ;)

Well played.

vote-for3vote-against

What an odd question. I shall say yes.

vote-for25vote-against

The price of ink is determined by the labor costs of milking the ink out of squids. Unless someone figures out how to run squid farms more efficiently, the price will remain high.

vote-for9vote-against

This is why we need to vote Reform Party. The ink industry has both major parties in their collective pocket.

vote-for6vote-against

Sure they'll go down. But the prices of printers will go up to more than account for the reduction in the cartridge prices. Then the extra profit made there will be funneled into overseas bank accounts.

vote-for10vote-against

@nortonsark: We need to farm squids in Alaska! Why are they exempt from milking? Also, the price of upkeep on squid teet-squeezing machinery is way too high.

vote-for3vote-against

@olperfesser: Sure, but how many can they carry while climbing over a 12 foot border fence?

vote-for14vote-against

@tippypaws: Organic free range squid ink is by far the better choice. No caged squid ink is allowed in my young printers.

@adadavis: they don't have to carry them at all. The squid hold on all by themselves.

Of course, the smell in the summer heat...Oy.

vote-for4vote-against

Just vote "none of the above" and get a laser printer. Sure the toner cartridge costs more, but it lasts longer...a LOT longer!

vote-for9vote-against

I just don't know. I have a feeling that both candidates are in the pockets of Big OEM Ink. Everyone knows Big OEM is the greatest threat to our freedom. I was hoping for a dark horse candidate controlled by Big Refurb, but the campaign got clogged up and really didn't have enough to last against OEM.

vote-for13vote-against

Of course! OEM ink prices will go down. The stock market will go up. Unemployment will go down. Life expectancy will go up. Birds will sing louder, the sun will shine brighter (while temperatures on earth will always be "just right"). All of the situations in the Middle East will be resolved. Cuba will become a free market democracy. North Korea will give up nuclear weapons, become a free market, and reunify with the south. The shah of Iran will embrace American ideals. Vladimir Putin will proclaim "just kidding".

All of those things are perfectly reasonable expectations to pin on a president. Naturally, if the guy you don't like wins, then the opposite of all those things will happen and fire will rain from the sky.

vote-for4vote-against

@adadavis: Let me tell you as someone who lives next to that fence, climbing is not usually required. Cutting is a one-time expense, easily amortized over the months it takes for anyone to notice one small hole in the miles of fencing.

vote-for1vote-against

What do you do when you don't want your vote going towards either candidate?

vote-for1vote-against

@lparsons42:
loved that post, just 1 little problem with it.
the Shah DID embrace American Ideals, in exchange for oil $$, that's why the Islamic hardliners gave him the boot. even the "president"(Ahmadinejad) has little real power, it's the Ayatollah that truly runs the country

vote-for7vote-against

@firebirdude: Vote Green. Or Libertarian. But vote. Not voting is seen as apathy. Votes for candidates from the smaller parties are a statement. I wish we could do away with the party system. I think we'd get a much truer picture of what each candidate stood for if they weren't boarded in by the planks of their party's platform.

vote-for11vote-against

@tippypaws: But the obvious solution is to bio-engineer squid so that they can send their ink directly to paper. The new SmartSquid would be wireless (and printer-less) with the ability to simply look at your computer screen and reproduce the image on paper. Since squid are quite intelligent already, this should not be too big of a problem. The downside is that, unlike most printers, if you upset your squid, it can spray you with ink. (My printer, like an upset squid, has been known to spray ink, but I think that is not the norm.)

vote-for5vote-against

@adadavis: I think I saw that printer on the Flintstones.

vote-for5vote-against

serious answers have no place here :D

I personally think the cost of OEM ink will stay the same, but you'll be required to have a technician visit your home to perpetuate the installation. This service will be added into your tax burden.

vote-for2vote-against

@earlyre: You're right, the Ayatollah was who I was trying to think of, thank you for correcting me. Some how I managed to come up with the Shah instead

@firefirdude: Voting for Mickey Mouse, a ficus tree, yourself, or any other non-candidate is perfectly acceptable. Just get out there and vote for someone. Or something. You can write-in anything you want, regardless of whether or not it is eligible. Convicted felons? Sure. Dead people? Why not! Plants or animals? Acceptable too. Inanimate or non existent things? Go for it. Just go vote.

vote-for3vote-against

OEM will become mandated but have government backing (only to certain income groups) and thus be subsidized based on your location and cost of living factors.

vote-for3vote-against

@adadavis: Only half of the fence has been built. And the Supreme Court axed the Arizona immigration law, so it is only a matter of time before they declare the fence unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the tunnels continue to be dug! More cheap cartridges will make it into the country because, like drugs, we continue to buy them.

vote-for6vote-against

@olperfesser: Good. The fence is a dumb idea and doesn't work. It is impossible to patrol or protect a fence that long and that isolated. People can dig under it, climb over it, or cut through it. There's an old saying that's something like, "a six foot fence is just a chance to sell a 7 foot ladder". In one case they stole big rig on each side of the border and backed the trailers up to the fence on each side to make a bridge. There's a lot of money in smuggling, and where there's money, there are clever people to make it. That fence is a complete waste of money that could be used to about a zillion better things, including simply increasing the manpower of the Border Patrol.

Look at this population map of Texas. Much of the border area has less than 10 people per square mile. This gives people all the time in the world to get through that fence unnoticed.

I hadn't realized that people were smuggling squids across the border, but that might explain the term "wetback."

vote-for3vote-against

As a currently injured American who hasn't printed anything at home since windows 98 I'm more interested in health care.

Seriously who prints at home anymore? Are you guys still using Rotary phones too?

vote-for2vote-against

The price of printer ink will remain at current levels or rise, the profit margins on the cartridges will significantly increase.

vote-for2vote-against

@gideonfrost: Where do you print? I use groupons etc on the weekends that need to be printed, plus the occasional printing for games. I guess a lot of people use their phones to show groupons, but I pay by the minute and printing is cheaper.

vote-for2vote-against

Forget OEM ink. If he wins, the cost of red tape is going to skyrocket!

vote-for3vote-against

It sounds like there is a great demand for squid milkers. Can I go to school for this? I need a new start.

vote-for3vote-against

@jsimsace: Or you could become a chef specializing in squid ink pasta dishes. Squid ink is nothing if not versatile.

vote-for1vote-against

Or you could just buy off-brand ink like the rest of us.

vote-for2vote-against

It doesn't matter who wins. Ink prices will continue to rise - as will the price of everything else. It's inflation, and neither will do anything significant to stop or slow it.
