Whats the best mini notebook for the money.
I'm going to use it for torrents, web browsing, very light video/picture editing. HDMI out would be nice, as would a built in webcam. I'm looking to spend max of $300.

There are quite a few deals floating around, its really personal preference regarding make/model etc but here are some tips of what to look for.
- Most Netbooks have a webcam built in, you may want to verify however before you are ready to buy.
- I haven't seen one with HDMI out, not saying they aren't out there but it would be rare.
- Netbooks generally come with 1gb ram installed but most can be upgraded to 2 gb (one stick). Ram is cheap, get some with your purchase. Verify with the manufacturer first how much RAM it can hold. This will be a must for any video editing.
- Netbooks can have some odd hardware requiring some obscure drivers. I own an EeePC, it had a bunch of wireless driver problems with a couple builds of Ubuntu, Win 7 is running great on it however. Most come with Win XP.
- Get the Atom processor over a Celeron. It runs cooler and is more power efficient. Costs a little more.
I have had a MSI Wind for a while now and it is great. I added some RAM and package came with external CD/DVD. I take it on travel always and the battery life is great (5-6 hours)
Here is what you have to work with in netbooks:
1) Processor - Virtually all of the netbooks have either the N270 or N280 processor. If you have a choice go with the N280 - it has a faster bus speed.
2) Hard Drive - usually a choice between solid state (expensive) and magnetic hard drive. I have seen up to 250GB hard drives in netbooks.
3) RAM - usually maxes out at 2GB. Most will come with 1GB these days.
4) Battery - 3 cell, 6 cell, or 9 cell. A 9 cell battery is bulky, but it will give you like 8-9 hours of battery life. A 6 cell will give you like 5 1/2 hours.
5) keyboard comfort and mouse configuration - different manufacturers will put different feeling keyboards and mice on their netbooks. Placement of the buttons may also be something to think about.
It may be worth noting that many manufacturers are now creating netbook sized laptops that are more powerful. Check out some of the lenovo products.
