Wow that's pretty bad. I've actually had good experience sending and receiving packages throught USPS, but I have a good mail carrier so that may be part of it.

When I was in SoCal, I had so many problems that I got a post office box just to avoid (some of) the trauma. Now that I live here, in the middle of nowhere, all three of the potential delivery services are just fabulous (that'd be FedEx, UPS, and USPS). One of my brothers gets things pre-crushed all the time. The other one, who lives nearby, never does.

Personally, in my brother's case, I can see the postman deliberately stomping on it when they see the addressee, but that's just me.

Be prepared to see continual declines in USPS service quality. They have been making substantial reductions in their workforce and are in the process of shutting down/consolidating quite a few offices. They have been losing a lot of money every year for years and needless to say, in this economic climate it has come home to roost.

Lately, I have sent several Priority mail packages. One package, lite and small, took a week to get from RI to FL. Just another "new normal" we will all have to adjust to...

My local post office handles things pretty well, but I've heard some horror stories about USPS in other areas.

Yeah, pretty much same story here. I may have posted on the other thread, but basically I shipped a box of books from NY to WA. It came completely busted open on one side and missing 3 books. Cooooool.

I hate the USPS with a passion. They wonder why they keep losing money and it's primarily their service quality. I have even on occasion not ordered something simply because the seller shipped USPS.

I have only seen a few beaten-up boxes (around the same as I see with FedEx or UPS), but I've had a few lost (in which case USPS is almost painful to deal with) or delayed. For example, ordered 1/2 gallon of maple syrup around Christmas last year. It shipped, was making progress, and then for over a week simply got stuck. It was in-state in their tracking system but was not making the final jump to me. And then 3-4 days after complaining it just showed up like magic.

Regular mail is even worse. I've had bills go missing (hooray paperless these days) and I only have a 50-50 shot of actually getting my supermarket circulars (which USPS is paid to deliver to me but doesn't anyway sometimes). I'd rant more, but 1 post is enough.

USPS is horrendous. My boxes get beat up, re-routed, some days my mail carrier doesn't bother showing up. I could go on, but I don't want to get myself all pissy again.

They lost my 3 keychain screaming monkeys (smartpost says they were delivered, but they weren't).

Woot customer service tried to be helpful about it and wanted me to talk to USPS first, but the post office is useless. The first two times I went people told me that I needed to come back another day to talk to someone else, and the third time they said they'd call back in three days. It's been over a week and I still haven't heard from them.

I'm not going to complain to woot about it since it obviously isn't their fault, but I can't deal with USPS people anymore. Looks like I'm out a few monkeys :(

@panthiest: Call their Customer Service at 800‑275‑8777 to get a person, at the commands Press 6, 4 ; or say "Agent" repeatedly... They may or may not be helpful, but at least you'll talk to someone.

@jsoko: Thanks. I'm off tomorrow, so I'll give it a shot :)

For all interested, I got my call today. As expected within the two days... The representative didn't seem to care about how the package was ripped in half. She was more concerned that the postal worker, that actually delivered it, didn't put a "Sorry" sticker on it. I feel USPS is completely avoiding the true issue, and just want to put on a cosmetic fix.

@jsoko: Well they told me they'd investigate, and to expect a call back in 3-5 business days. Sounds like the same deal as before :(

@jsoko: I actually got my monkey keychains today :D

Two don't scream, but I'm still happy I got something. The screaming might have gotten annoying in a keychain anyway.

Thanks again for the number.
