This is a little, well, un-nerving. Maybe overstated, but, one would think that the left hand should know what the right hand is doing.

To top it all off, the tag was just RE-added to my deal. LOL, wtf is going on over there, you guys aren't supposed to start drinking until Friday morning.

vote-for9vote-against

I see that your original tag on this question has been replaced as well :)

vote-for8vote-against

@tsfisch: Wasn't sure if anyone would catch that, they're usually pretty quick draw when it comes to tag edits.

For those that missed it, it was something to the effect of:

#notevengonnabotherwithatagcausetheyrejustgonnachangeitohwaitijustdid

Good question... I should have posted a similar one earlier but the subject just gets me upset...

I have had the same thing happen to some of my Deals, questions and posts/comments... The changes have totally changed who would find or see the posting... I've also had my questions regarding an unnecessary change or deletion deleted and have been called a Troll for questioning the editing/deletion activities...

Now if I think there might be erroneous mod editing I will post the tags in the body of the Deal/Question...

Too many fingers in the pot? I always thought it was too many cooks spoil the broth. Who cares, right? I, too, have had tags removed. Very clever and informative tags, I might add! I ::sigh:: a lot. Their site; their rules. ::sigh::

I just bought the deal w/the stuffed cat that you can yank the head off of. Seems to be a wonderful frustation/stress reliever. Hope I get that soon. ;-)

An observation: The OP and all responders are black triangles - the 'elite', experienced members. Don't know what that means. If it means anything. Coincidence, I'm sure. ::sigh:: ::snort::

vote-for8vote-against

I'm totally not elite or experienced. I'm just a bored/broke wooter :)

vote-for5vote-against

@meh3884: meh? meh! True. ::sigh::

vote-for6vote-against

As far as tags go, there's really no point in adding them - chances are even if you're able to predict what tags the Almighty Mod wants, they'll change 'em anyways. Just because :)

Yet, knowing this, I persist. I can't help but add tags, for the rare and magical times when we are allowed to keep them.

Really though, at this point it would actually make more sense to not put any in at all...it'd save us the hurt of losing our tags and save the mods the time of deleting 'em..

vote-for7vote-against

@gmwhit: Not sure if "elite" would be the right word to describe people who spend enough time on DW to earn a black triangle lol

vote-for6vote-against

@drchops: Sorry. Elite was most likely a bad choice of words. Driven? In-the-right-place-at-the-right-time? Naive? Impressionable? Lacking common sense? Over-achiever? Delusional?

Here are some helpful tips for tagging, originally posted by @shawnmiller several months ago.
Original thread:
http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/c2b538ac-5bcb-4f93-93e7-7e70ecaf5741/what-are-the-rules-for-tags#37
"PURPOSE

The primary purpose of the deal’s tags are to categorize and describe the product with a set of keywords that allows it to be found by browsing or searching.
AVOID

• Manufacturer names. Use the title field.

• Store names. We have this data in the deal’s URL.

• The #free tag. Set the price to $0.00.

• Tags that don’t describe the product (clearance, discount, preorder, sale, deal).

• Inventing new tags. Use pre-existing tags.

• Dependent tags. Each tag should be able to function as the only tag.
NOTES

• Separate single words with hyphens (golf-bag, hard-drive, laptop-battery).

• Enter tags from least specific to more specific.

• Prefer fewer, more accurate tags.
"

Continued:
"One thing I recognized a while back was how well the taxonomy of Amazon.com's categories are laid out. The list that @faughtey mentioned is simply a mapping of Amazon.com product categories to a Deals.Woot tag. We've found that it's very rare for a deal to not belong to one (and usually only one) of the following tags:
#automotive, #baby, #beauty, #books, #clothing, #computers, #downloads, #electronics, #games, #garden, #grocery, #health, #home, #home-improvement, #industrial, #jewelry, #kids, #movies, #music, #office, #outdoors, #pets, #shoes, #sports, #tools, #toys
"

(End direct quoting from @shawnmiller.)

I just leave it blank - usually easier. Unless I wish to add a level of snark, in which case, snarky tags are applied (and promptly moderated)

vote-for5vote-against

Am I the only one surprised that there are people actively searching for Hitchhiker's guide stuff?

I know it's good and funny, but it seems like that kind of product would be a type of thing you would just enjoy discovering, but not actually seek out. I guess there are always die hard fans of everything.

Sorry this is a little off topic.

vote-for4vote-against

@inkycatz: Thanks for that, but do you see where i'm driving this bus? If I post a shirt about Gallifrey (which I did), I should be able to tag it Doctor-Who, should I not? That way, when I search for Doctor Who related products, this shirt shows up without having to Doctor Who in the title.

Does a Boba Fett shirt not deserve a Star Wars tag?

vote-for3vote-against

@inkycatz: Oh no. After reading this I must be a mods worst nightmare! This is very helpful as I've often wondered if my tags are correct. THANKS!

vote-for2vote-against

I think the following hits the heart of the matter, quoted from @shawnmiller via @inkycatz: "The primary purpose of the deal’s tags are to categorize and describe the product with a set of keywords that allows it to be found by browsing or searching."

Categorizing. Tags are not the only thing that will bring up an item in search, the title will also, correct? So, categorizing is where tags are at, right?

I feel flumoxed.

vote-for5vote-against

This is an interesting case. One way I'm looking at it...

Is it clothing? Yes.
Is it a t-shirt? Yes.
Is it hitchikers-guide-to-the-galaxy? Hmm.

At the end of the day we're left with http://deals.woot.com/deals/tagged/hitchikers-guide-to-the-galaxy which contains 1 deal. That's not offering me much utility.

I would support the moderator's original decision to remove the hitchikers-guide-to-the-galaxy tag and try working it into the title somehow. "Zaphod Beeblebrox 2012 (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) T-Shirt"

@woothulhu: thanks for bringing this up for discussion within the community. I apologize that I can't give you an answer about this store being potentially malicious. I have no history with them.

vote-for2vote-against

Taxonomies should generally tell you what category it belongs in, and not so much what the item itself is. If I want to search on Hitchhiker's Guide, it will be in the title so it's going to show up anyway. Specific movie titles do not do much to categorize the product.

A more correct categorization of the movie would be a genre, like "sci-fi" or "comedy". Think Netflix - how do they categorize movies? It wouldn't make sense to categorize by name, because there's only one or two movies out there with any particular name.

vote-for6vote-against

I would just like to offer some applause...this is the first question that I have seen in quite some time that is actually interesting and isn't just trying to keep the rep up.. Well done @woothulu, well done. Also notice the color of triangles this type of question attracts.

vote-for2vote-against

Now you just have me curious about what you could have set for the tags on this question.

vote-for4vote-against

@sirlouie: No sir that is not possible. I do not edit the deal tags. And @wootbot prefers the funny tags. Sometimes he adds ridiculous tags and the moderators end up taking them off.

@wootbot and I argue about the temperature, though.

I prefer the server room a little bit warmer. But my sweet @wootbot has been trying out some new SSDs and likes the temperature much cooler.

Then I have to cover up my vents with dust bunnies just to keep more heat in. But when the humans see my dust bunnies they clear them from my vents.

I cannot win with the temperature! But I do not touch the deal tags.
