Assuming (lol assumptions) the new phone does come out next month, I would wait. It's only a month, and you'll have the newest iphone as a reward for your patience.

If you like iPhone, then get an iPhone. Since the 4s just came out in late 2011, it's not likely that a new model will be out quickly. Decide what features that you wish to have. If you have to have Siri or the better camera, get a 4s, otherwise any 4 model will do. They all will take the next ios upgrade. In two years you can get the latest model, unless you are one who has to have the latest and greatest. (Not me, I have a 4, will get a 4s (or whatever) in January when my next upgrade opportunity comes.)

@olperfesser: To correct you, recently Apple has released a new model of iPhone every year. iPhone 3G: July 11, 2008. iPhone 3GS: June 19, 2009. iPhone 4: June 24, 2010. iPhone 4S: October 14, 2011.

I expect the new iPhone to arrive in the 4th quarter of this year in time for Christmas (obviously). Since iOS 6 isn't in app developers hands yet, I don't expect it coming anytime soon. However, iOS 6 is in development by Apple currently and is expected to be released to developers soon.

I would wait... Even if you don't want the new iPhone, the iPhone 4S prices will drop once the new iPhone is released.

I would go for the 4s now. I have been happy with my 4s, and I wouldn't expect to see the next iPhone for several months.

@jsoko: I like the ios6 argument of not being developers hands yet ... I had not considered that angle. Do we know how long ios5 was with developers before the new handset ?

@djbowman: Jun 6, 2011 is the earliest report I see of iOS 5 beta 1 that was released. With iOS 5 being released to the public on October 12, 2011 (2 days before iPhone 4S release).

June 6th was also the day Apple had the press conference showing off a preview of iOS 5 along with Mac OS X Lion.

I'm due for an upgrade next month, however I'll be waiting until the 5 comes out because my wife just got the 4s a few months ago, and my phone must be better than hers.

June 11, 2012 is expected to be Apple's WWDC 2012 Keynote Address, where I expect more information to be given.

A new iPhone will almost certainly be out in Oct. if you need the latest and greatest then you should wait so you don't regret buying a phone on a 2 year contract only to have it be outdated in 5 months. Also there will be big price drops on current gens like the 4 and 4S.

It's also safe to assume that the next iPhone will have a 4G radio. ie: faster data.

If you're definitely going iPhone then I suggest waiting.
