The prices haven't quite caught up yet in a lot of brick & mortar stores - much slower than online. Newegg prices are already insanely high. All I can say is don't assume the online prices are the lowest.

I've been exclusively buying WD lately, but if the price difference was very much, I'd go straight to Seagate.

MicroCenter has implemented a One-Hard-Drive-Per-Customer policy now to avoid people taking advantage of their reluctance to raise prices right away.

Seagate goflex is reliable and reasonably priced. Costco had them pretty cheap.

A limit of one? Kinda pointless...I mean, data is so cheap now that if I'm getting 1 I'm getting 2 so I can RAID for max protection. My Canon XSi shoots 10.2 megapixel RAW at about 25 megs each. No way I want to compress them, nor do I want to risk losing them to a crash.

@cloudscout: I neglected to mention the closest microcenter to where I live is a few hundred miles away.

I highly any of the Iomega drives. They've got some of the best warranties on the market and their product is solid. As for cheap hds, ebay may be your best bet. I don't recommend Newegg. They're kinda horribly priced.

I'm waiting till drives go back down in price. From what I've been reading, things should start getting better around the 2nd quarter of 2012.

THIS.
Watch the TECH news(not the evening news), plants are coming back online as we speak. Unless it's an emergency or a writeoff, put off buying this for at least 3 months, preferably 6. As drives become available, businesses will pay the money and snag 'em. There's no sense competing with that. Be patient and wait.
