Do you prefer buying bulk Comic Books at random, or in packages of specific titles?
It has been recently brought to our attention by Deals.Woot that we can not sell Comic Books at random, which we assume is why other companies stopped selling comic books on Deals.Woot. We were told we must picture the titles included in the package in order to list them. So we understand the rules now.
However we want to know what you actually feel about this. Would you perfer to purchase bulks of Comic Books at random, or do you prefer the Deals.Woot position the titles must be listed or pictured?

I would say comic mystery boxes are the best way to sell off your inventory seeing as you are probably selling "modern age comics" only (Or I assume so, as I still have not received my orders from you yet).. (mid-1980s until present day) which are worth less than the paper their printed on.. These are the comics you see a lot in yard sales for between .25 and $1/each
It's only worth it to sell comics individually (or in small sets), if they are in the Bronze Age (1970 to 1985), Silver Age (1956-1970) Golden Age (1930-1955), or older.
@devexityspace: So how do you feel about buying assortments yourself? For example would you like to purchase 10 totally random assorted for a very cheap price, or would you consider purchasing 10 specific titles for a slightly higher price?
We prefer assorted because we are not really in the Comic Book business, we just did a massive buyout of New Comic Books. Many of the titles I don't have a clue what they were, but when I was sent to the warehouse I noticed common things I knew about on a Non-Comic Book form including Spiderman, Buffy, Star Wars, Blade and Superman to name a few.
If you did a pack of "10 specific comics" for X Price, it would have to be a good enough "deal" in order to sell them quickly. Most comic book buyers are not in it to read them, they are in it to collect. Educated buyers would look up how much each of the 10 comics were selling for on Ebay and use that to make a decision whether it is worth it to buy your bundle.
Most modern age comics will be lucky to get more than $.50-$2 out of them unless they are BRAND new releases that people are trying to get their hands on, and then it's usually face value or a little less. TPB's/Graphic Novels/HardcoverGN's however seem to be the current "hot items" in the comic world, which can shoot up 1,000% shortly after release due to limited numbers.
Example: I bought up 10 Se7en [Hardcover] - Zenescope issues from Amazon at $23.07 - The first one I sold after they were out of stock went for $130.
Also! Do these comics come in sleeves with cardboard backing? Or are they just mistreated comics..
@devexityspace: So you think our current Deal of 15 Comics for $5 is a good deal? As stated before we normally sell them totally assorted, but because Deals.Woot said we could not do that any longer we list 15 titles that we have a decent quantity of, then when someone purchases more than the 15 they get a random assortment.
I personally believe but don't know, the totally assorted stuff is the most valuable from a reselling perspective, because they looked really weird and some even looked decently older when I checked them out at the warehouse.
@devexityspace: They do not come with sleeves and cardboard, except some are already in plastic. I would assume that would cost even more. However our warehouse doesn't ship destroyed books, they check the books look ok from a quick view. Basically they don't want customers upset, so they would not ship a torn book, etc.
I am not familar with the Comic Book jargon so I don't know what you mean by abused. These purchased these Brand New a few years ago. We were supposed to list them individually on the site for $1 to $5 each. However the buyer didn't have a clue how Comic Books worked, he thought we would just be listing a dozen or so titles. They ended up sitting because we didn't want to deal with it, until someone on Woot said they missed the random Comic Book offers. I told my boss, and here we are!
The term "abused comics" differs from collector to collector, but for the most part it is a comic book that is NOT sleeved and gets worse from there on out (bent edges, torn, etc). Some would argue that no cardboard backing is abuse. (All of my comic collection is in fact acid-free self-sealing sleeves/card board backed in BCW card board Long Boxes.
I prefer "Direct Edition" comics personally (which started in the 70's), as they were sold directly from the manufacturer as they are generally in better condition (shipped properly and without the minimum wage teenager throwing the comics on the shelves at a news stand or shop)
$9.49 shipped for those 15 comics is not really what I would consider a good deal for them. Granted it's better than $1/each (which someone COULD sell them in a yard sale for); however some of those titles are "quarter comics".
I do not collect comic books - anything I get is mostly for nostalgia and for me to read then put on a shelf somewhere.
I have definite preferences: DC > Marvel > Dark Horse, etc but as previously mentioned these don't have much collecting value with a few exceptions.
Bottom line: I don't like duplicates in random grab bags. Since the condition can't be guaranteed I'd say sell 'em at random and cheap. Next best is sort by publisher (e.g. lot of DC for $x or lot of Marvel for $y) and bump the price a bit.
I don't think it's worth sorting them individually.
@devexityspace: Ok, they are NOT Abused, and yes they are Direct Sales. Also you don't think 15 Comic Books Delivered by Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation is a great deal for a regular person? Of course if someone buys more it actually gets cheaper per book, however they could get some duplicates.
I don't see why you can't offer both. Where it would be nice to buy a pack of iron man or batman comics so that you know you will like it. I like the idea of just getting a variety of comics so that I can potentially find a new series I've never heard of or even get the opportunity to read a series I normally wouldn't invest in.
I prefer a mix of mostly DC and Marvel, with the occasional random odd comic included. I'd pay more to have the chance to get better, more valuable comics. I've gotten mystery packs in the past that have included A) an autographed comic B) first editions C) oooold comics, all of which make the mystery a bit more appealing.
@woothulhu: Yes, that is why we like totally assorted. The only problem with the way Deals.Woot makes us sell them, is the fact that the warehouse actually has to go through and find Comic Books we have a large enough inventory of, to be able to give a large number of buyers a fixed package for the first bundle. Some people like this best, but it is NOT likely one of those Rare comics could ever be received in the first bundle because it is defined.
@superheman: We agree, however Deals.Woot would require they be the exact mix as pictured. We could not do that, for example if we find 20 different Spiderman or Star Wars comics, we could not say an assortment of Spiderman or Star Wars comics, we would have to show specific titles. This is very hard because some titles we may have 1000 or some we may have 5 of.
It would be nice to have some of the deals admins weigh in on this and explain if there is some sort of work around. They sell random shirts and BOCs, and i'm certain i've seen some grab bags from thinkgeek up here.
@superheman: Woot only allows woot sponsored BOCs, but we cannot post mystery boxes. I imagine dollardeals is experiencing limitations around these rules...
@woothulhu: Yes we actually attempted to be a Sponsored Deal with a Comic Books assortment and ended up doing a Dora the Explorer Party Pack which some of you may remember, got destroyed. This is how we found out posters are NOT allowed to post assorted random/mystery deals regardless of price. Sponsor or Not.
We accept this, because if it is the rules who are we to challange it. However we can have a conversation about it.
