Found out what the Xmas BoC bugs were?
I threw away a bag of rice and one of flour because they had bugs in them. I've never had issues with bugs in my grain 'til recently. The bugs look like the shells that came out of the box.
I'm no expert, but if someone would post a picture of the bugs, I'll take a jab at it (or have my exterminator look at the next time he's around).
A couple months ago we had these little brown beetles flying through the house. We couldn't figure out where they were coming from. One day, we went to make some steel cut oats and lo and behold, tiny little brown beetles crawling all over the inside of the bag. Makes me wonder how many of those little guys I ate in my morning oatmeal. Added protein, I guess.
@90mcg112: lol I ate a bowl of Raisin Bran one morning at my in-laws' house and when I was nearly done, I noticed there were little brown beetles swimming/crawling around in the bran mush... Not just a few, but 40-50. There wasn't much left at this point, so I would imagine I ate hundreds if not thousands. I was fine though, just mentally bruised (I still can't eat Raisin Bran).
@capguncowboy: Oh god, that's one of the worst things I have ever heard.
I would have forced vomiting, gargled peroxide, all sorts of stuff. At least you got some extra protein and fiber...which is perhaps the smallest silver lining in the world.
The ones you are describing sounds like weevils. They're usually in grains. I ended up with some from a bag of rice I bought at the grocery store. Luckily, they're pretty easy to get rid of... you just throw away any open grains (rice, flour, cereal, etc) where you find them.
I went back to the same grocery store about 2 weeks later and on a whim checked the rice aisle. Yep, just about every bag had weevils in 'em. I quietly got the manager and showed him. He was pulling every bag as I left.
@capguncowboy, I Lol'd, what else can you do. Living in Fl has taught me how much I hate bugs, they're everywhere and much tougher and bigger than me. After some research I now put whole Bay leaves in my grains, it's been years and haven't had a problem with bugs in my food. I let my cat have fun with the rest, it makes her feel "wild" she practices her pouncing on them, and I laugh, win win for both, lol.
@meems212: bay leaf? never heard of this. can you explain? is it an old timey thing or is there a science or just a lucky happenstance or what?
@capguncowboy: They're pure protein usually, making them a great way to start out your day.
@moosezilla: I had forgotten where I found the info regarding Bay leaves, so I did a little digging and this is what I found so far, hope this helps:
This site has info on quite a few bugs and "natural" ways to repel them, scroll down for Bay leaves: http://eartheasy.com/live_natpest_control.htm
This one also has info on Bay leaves:http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/home/herbs-deter-flies-naturally.htm
This last one gives arguments for both sides, yes it works and don't work and lets the reader decide: http://www.everythingprepared.com/HomeFoodStorage/FoodStorageInsectControl.html
When I was still just a wee teen I dumped myself a bowl of Grape Nuts (my favorite ceareal at the time-odd for a teen I know)
I plunked down in front of the tv and was chewing and slurping away when I looked down and saw a lot of "little swimmers". I stopped chewing, my mouth went dry, then numb. I spit the cereal out and ran to the sink to wash out my mouth. My mother laughed at me and I have never been able to face Grape Nuts again. ... Gosh I miss Grape Nuts.. It's been 20 years and I still can't fathom the thought of eating a bowl.
@capguncowboy: Ugh, nasty. Well, that settles it, yogurt for breakfast it is!
I lived in a nasty college apartment back in the day, and I bought a box of pancake mix... I started making pancakes and didn't really notice anything until I put the first scoop of batter on the griddle. Those poor little bastards were trying to escape their perfectly cooked fate. I tossed the batter and the brand new box of pancake mix... And to be safe, all the dry goods in the cabinet (flour, baking mix, etc.) Even a poor college kid has his limits.
The weevils being discussed here show up in all sorts of pasta and grain products, and as far as I can ascertain they're present when the product is packaged. (Unless they've figure out a way to squeeze into cellophane bags and tightly glued shut cardboard boxes.) They're not related to the cleanliness of your home, and fortunately they don't seem to migrate to other foods. I've had them perhaps 10 times in 40+ years of keeping my own kitchen; for a while I tried keeping all pasta and grain products in Tupperware, but that was a lot of hassle and I gave up on it.
The real annoyance for me is when I reach for the pasta (always mid-recipe) and discover not only is it infested but it's also the only such item in the house. Grrr.
Yeah, they are some sort of weevil, but they aren't native around here. I've seen them in the south before, but only rarely in this area.
I only found a few, so hopefully they won't be an issue. I don't care about them, I'll just cook them, they're not poisonous and my wife is almost blind.
The weevil eggs are already in the grains. We have all eaten countless millions of weevil eggs in out lives and never noticed. If you store grains and pasta products where they get sunlight, the eggs will never hatch and you will never see them. That's why a lot of the counter jars for storing cereal, pasta, flour and the like are clear. Put them in a dark pantry and the weevils will hatch and make the food unpalatable.
@meems212: thanks for the info. i am forwarding it to several people i know.
