Why does Apple insist on having bright white earbuds?
I see people walking down the street and the stark white just jumps out at you. Is it part of their marketing? I prefer a nice subtle black or gray. Blends in much better.
I am sure that somewhere Apple has a patent for a hands-free secret handshake so all the hip, cool people can recognize and acknowledge one another. Of course it makes it easier for muggers as well.
These are old, but now that the headphone design has changed, it may spur another set of targeted thefts.

It doesn't matter what color they are, people will talk in your direction until you actually take them out.
It's marketing. Apple has accomplished the amazing feat of associating the color white with their company in the public's mind. When you see somebody with white earbuds, you automatically assume they are listening to an iPod or iPhone. That turns that person into a walking advertisement for Apple - even if they in reality they have a Zune in their pocket.
That's a powerful reason for them to keep making white earbuds. Any other color will fail to advertise them.
So people don't think you're singing to the radio station in your brain...
It's a huge conspiracy to artificially boost sales. They want the iSheep to wear their white ear buds, thus marking them to all as having a iDevice. Which muggers can then take from them, which will then cause an emergency run the the nearest iStore to replace their iDevice.
It's a status symbol of sorts if you're into that.
Marketing - Apple successfully got everyone to associate white earbuds and wires with their products, after running a series of ads with them featured. http://youtu.be/NlHUz99l-eo
